Brad, "If you put as much money in basketball as you do in football surely we will win a natty." "That has everything to do with football's success. Come on, I'm just as good as Dabo." ??

I stand by my position on the last game against VA Tech, any decent Church BB Coach would have won that game!
No amount of $ is going to make mr brownell a Good Coach. He simply Does Not have Championships in his tool box!
He has the Tommy Bowden skill sets
And if he truly said he's as good as Dabo then
Add Dilusional to his resume

Yeah I’m sure shoveling money at basketball will help him call a time out when the other teams on a 12-0 run, or not put six men on the court, or help him draw play coming out of a time out, or make free throws…..yeeesh

As long as defeatist 'fans' continue to offer that excuse for him to cover up his inability to recruit, develop, and outcoach his peers, you can bet Brown L is going to use it to defend himself at every available opportunity. He has the worst record of any Clemson basketball coach not named Shyatt since the 1980's, while banking more of our dollars than all of them combined. What a waste.

Brad used his time to talk about NIL being good for the players, not going on a rant about how awful NIL is. That's great to hear, because I've heard other coaches use interview time as a time to complain about NIL.

Whether coaches are talking about NIL being bad for the sport, bad for athletes, or bad for their team, it isn't productive and might backfire. I'm glad Brad is being positive about it.

Brad didn't make any excuses about NIL, but simply spoke about how it is requiring some adjustment. Nothing wrong with that.

more money is needed,"...especially the need to spend more money on the program.", something that has been discussed on this board, by you, for some time. You have used this as a reason why we aren't competitive, a sentiment seemingly echoed by CBB in the interview. I pointed out a common trait in leaders is the "can vs can't" mentality, which somehow got you off the point, and talking about mystery coaches whining about NIL and some other stuff not related to your original point of more money being needed for the program. I don't know, kinda seems like you took a weird turn about two posts back, unless the point you were trying to make with "...especially the need to spend more money on the program." is that CBB is positive about NIL and that's good.

May 27, 2022, 1:38 PM

My first post in this thread encouraged people to watch the interview. You are correct, my point was that Brad spoke about the importance of increasing program funding if we want to see more success. As Brad mentioned, subpar funding has hurt our program in the past.

Then, out of nowhere, you responded with:

I find successful leaders provide reasons why they can, not reasons why they can’t.

I like CBB, but when you hear a coach talking like this it usually means it’s the end of the line. I hope he can get it turned around.

Rather than following up on my comment about program expenditures and sharing your thoughts about that, you instead took things in a different direction by sharing a platitude that had nothing to do with my post. You insinuated that Brad was complaining and being negative.

So I responded to your post by pointing out that Brad wasn't complaining or making excuses. He stated a fact, which is that we invested more in football at Clemson and that resulted in the success we had. He also spoke positively about NIL and the portal. In other words, he didn't focus on the negatives at all.

Hey Cobb. If you’re going to compare to football…

then you must acknowledge that Dabo sacrificed money from his own salary in the early years in order to hire and retain the assistants he wanted.
He invested in his program, and it has paid off big time for him…and for Clemson.
Win-win.

His point went way over your head.

If money or funding doesn't matter, then we would have gotten 2 national championships anyways without all that support. So we wasted that money on the facilities....

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How quickly you forget that Dabo only won 56% of his games from 2008-2010.

May 25, 2022, 9:51 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: WATCH: Brad Brownell talks transfer portal, what's next for Clemson basketball ]

That was despite being at a football school, with a good football history, with rabid fan support, and players like CJ Spiller and other excellent recruits.

It wasn’t until the administration ponied up more money for more facilities and better assistants that Dabo started winning more.

Yes, the administration ponied up the funds to give him what he wanted, but he produced beyond anyone’s wildest dreams. Plenty of schools have spent the money but got nothing close to what Dabo has accomplished. It takes more than money.

Dabo is an outstanding coach, and even he was mediocre until he was given more resources at Clemson.

May 25, 2022, 11:47 PM

Sorry, wrong. Dabo built the foundation before the funds were spent. Dabo went out like other great coaches we have had and he got the Jimmy and Joes to commit to him. Had zero to do with spending money.

If money and facilities and fan support was it, then Rick Barnes never would have won here. Bill Wilhelm never would have won. The kids had to practice in the parking lots... Same with golf. They all had chicken feed for expensive assistant and facilities.

It's a convenient excuse that Brad's globbed onto and probably laughs at the admin for buying it.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dabo built the foundation with Jimmys and Joes huh?

May 26, 2022, 12:03 PM

First of all, our 2008 recruiting class (Bowden’s last one) was a top 10 class.

Dabo’s first class in 2009 was ranked 36th by 247Sports. That’s to be expected since it was a smaller class and it was his first as a head coach. Getting Tajh Boyd was big.

In 2010, 247Sports ranked our class 27th.

By this point, Dabo was hardly setting the world on fire with recruits or with on the field performance.

You can’t just revise history to make it fit your incorrect narrative that Dabo was building this strong foundation of players those first few years when we won a mediocre 56% of our games.

Again, it wasn’t until Clemson’s administration got behind football more with increased coaches’ salaries and additional facility improvements that Dabo starting winning more.

Dabo and Brad each started out with roughly the same

salaries in year 1, and each saw relative success early, which led the AD to up the financial support in each, albeit incrementally. Dabo parlayed that additional support into the greatest run in Clemson athletics history and further ratcheting up the investment in the program. Brad, on the other hand, with a fat contract and long-term security in place early, petered out and showed promise and performance only during make or break seasons since, just enough to preserve that gravy train while the program overall has lost fans, lost energy, and squandered a decade of the Clemson brand's rise to national prominence.

Giving Tommy Bowden credit for Dabo and Billy Napier's recruiting classes? You should give Tommy credit for the dynamic offense he brought to Clemson which magically diapered when Rich Rod left for WV too.

May 26, 2022, 9:25 PM

I just thought it was funny that it took about 10 seconds to disprove the notion that Dabo “stockpiled talent” his first few years.

Some people here just can’t be honest about the fact that Dabo was in over his head and flirting with losing his job, and it wasn’t until the administration wisely realized that he needed to be able to hire better coaches that he started winning more.

It’s nothing to be ashamed by. All successful coaches at this level need great staffs around them.

If we’re being honest though, those examples are rare. Besides, why hamstring our coaches at Clemson by expecting them to consistently do more with less? Shouldn’t we want to give them every opportunity to be successful?

With that said, Brownell routinely overachieves at Clemson based on our pathetic support for basketball. Thankfully, Neff recognizes this and is committed to funding our program at a level more commensurate with our desire to win more.

From 2008-2010, Dabo was 19-15, a .559 winning percentage.

May 27, 2022, 1:25 PM

That fits within the definition of mediocre.

Yes, 2009 was a solid season, but certainly not great by Clemson football standards. We lost 4 games in the regular season, and only won our division because it was a really down year for the ACC Atlantic. Clemson and Boston College were the only two teams with a winning conference record that year, and we were the only Atlantic division team to finish in the top 25. The strength of the ACC that year was in the Coastal, with three teams finishing the season ranked in the top 20.

We beat a ho-hum Kentucky team in the Music City Bowl to finish 9-5.

The next year, we followed that up with a losing record, our first in over a decade.

You are welcome to argue semantics if you want, but the point is that Dabo was not as successful as everyone had hoped those first few years. In fact, his 19-15 record was worse than Tommy Bowden's 20-12 record from 2006-2008. So at that point, we had regressed in terms of record and in recruiting.

What changed to allow Dabo to become more successful at Clemson? Money from the administration to allow him to hire better coaches, as well as for better facilities. This isn't complicated.

Yes he has. Don't you think a similar investment is needed if we want to be a consistent winner? If we invest and it's not brownell theme let's get another coach. Maybe we can get a high profile guy if he knows he has the support he needs to win. And if we hire a guy that wins to our fans standard, maybe we can keep him for a couple years, unlike our previous successful coach in Barnes.

Our basketball fans are asking for consistent top 4 and 5 finishes in the ACC, and NCAA tournaments nearly every year. In order to do that we need more investment. I'm glad people knowledgeable about our program know that, and don't make knee jerk reactions like our idiot fans.

It must suck to feel so strongly about brownell being fired only to find out that the people closest to our program disagree.

That's right. Brad had to recover from Shyatt and OP which were dumpster fires at Clemson...lol

You're right. Our program was in such good standing, Purnell left for a better job offer at DEPAUL!!!

You see why it's important to have the support? So a coach that has the first sign of success (3 NCAA's losing in the first round) doesn't bolt for a powerhouse like DePaul.

Also not to mention the talent level left by OP in BB's year 2 was not ACC quality.

I wish Brad coulda won 56% of his games in YEAR 12 OF HIS TENURE.

May 26, 2022, 6:35 AM [ in reply to How quickly you forget that Dabo only won 56% of his games from 2008-2010. ]

But we need to pay him more money before we can reach such lofty expectations.

I know. I know.

If you even hint at eliminating basketball, you are clueless and not a true Clemson fan. Support our program and players. If results aren’t achieved, Neff will do what is necessary.

May 25, 2022, 11:47 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: WATCH: Brad Brownell talks transfer portal, what's next for Clemson basketball ]

bothers you, you must really think very little of Dabo. That’s his entire M.O. He’s all about the media is out to get him, everyone twists his words, “little ole Clemson”, whining about people attacking his character… And his severe persecution complex has rubbed off on a significant portion of this fan base. Sad to see.

Sorry, I'm sick and tired of hearing about more money for this and that. Instead of doing dog and ponys, get out and recruit. Sad to say, our feathered little bro in cootlumbia pulled the trigger and got a coach. Putting together quite a team of transfers.

Wouldn't hurt me to cancel the bball program and dispense the funds to other programs that don't continually play the poor little me card.

Lmao. Fans like you are the problem. What exactly do you mean he is doing dogs and pony's instead of recruiting. Sounds kinky.

Our program has been bad historically for a long time, and it's all brownell's fault. We don't need you as a "fan" peace out.

Yes, that's a lot different than me being the "basketball czar in deciding who can be fans or not"

Extremely dramatic take, but that's or for the course with you.

We shall see if throwing more money at the BB program and hiring this Billy Donovan translates into more success and getting to the NCAA Tournament.

I believe it will, but if it doesn't, we will know that

May 27, 2022, 1:27 PM

we did all we could to support the basketball program. We would also be in a much better position to hire a great coach to succeed Brownell.

Given Brad’s salary. Posting this article on here again. Why doesn’t brad offer up some more of his salary for assistants if that’s what he needs to win?
