Excuse my ignorance about Vegas odds but when I look at 3/1 how do I interpret that?

At 3/1 odds, you win 3 times what you bet

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

so if you bet $100

Jul 12, 2019, 11:54 AM

you win $300 and your payout is $400 which is $300 plus the $100 that you bet.

That shows what the odds makers know when TL embarrassed the team that TUA leads!!!

Not to brag, but...

I got ETN at 40:1 last month in Vegas. It's encouraging to see his odds improve so much. There had to be a lot of action on him to get the odds to move that much.

Justin Fields...lol!!

Jul 12, 2019, 10:26 AM

Hahaha.

Seriously, this kid is still living off his 7 on 7 performance in high school. This kid hasn't shown anything at all in college so far to even suggest he might one day actually be in Heisman contention.

Better odds than Travis Etienne...there's no rationale, even a stupid for that.

That's a suckers bet for sure.

Couldn't agree more. Didn't even get his number called 100 times as ESPN's #1 freshman in backup duty (Trevor was north of 450 without starting the first few games) and they're already trying to crown him king of CFB.

What were your feelings on Kyler Murray and Dwayne

Jul 12, 2019, 11:41 AM [ in reply to Justin Fields...lol!! ]

Haskins heading into last year? They had both barely played in college heading into last season and ended up 1st and 3rd in Heisman balloting.

I think we've seen so little of Fields that there's just not enough there to prove that he CANT be the type of QB he was expected to be coming out of HS. He has a new coaching staff now and will be given freedom within the OSU offense that he was not given during his appearances at Georgia.

Based on what little I've seen out of Fields there's nothing to indicate he CAN do it either. He didn't look remotely special backing up at UGA, and he was never able to beat Frohm out. Based on his enormous hype he should've won the job.

There are probably at least 100 other college football players that stand much better odds of winning the Heisman than him.

5*star Shaq Smith was the best pure athlete Clemson had at LB before he transferred. He never started for a reason. He got beat out by better LB's each and every season.

I'm not confusing Justin Field's athletic ability with his QB ability is all.

Strongly disagree with the 100 players. That's like saying

Jul 15, 2019, 9:17 AM

there are 30 or 40 programs with a better shot of winning the title in the next 3 years than Florida State. It's just not true. It doesn't matter what FSU looks like right now, only about 15 programs in the country are capable of compiling enough talent to win a national title and FSU is still one of those programs. Similarly, only a select group of players have a high enough ceiling to win a Heisman trophy and Fields is still one of those guys until absolutely proven otherwise. He might also turn out to be a huge bust, just like FSU could continue to suck for the next 3 years, but we still don't know that yet.

The ideal Heisman candidate is obviously somebody with a ridiculously high ceiling that has also shown that they can perform at that level on the field (Trevor, Tua, etc), but there aren't many of those guys each year. Beyond that you are really just looking for guys with the potential upside (and likely system and players around them) to put up Heisman caliber numbers if everything goes right. There's absolutely no reason to bet money on somebody like Danny Etling because he's NEVER going to be good enough. He might be way better than Fields next year but he literally has no shot at all of winning the Heisman. His best simply is not good enough. Period.

And honestly QB's are going to win the Heisman ~80% of the time and the other 20% it's going to be an elite RB (probably from Bama) in a down year for QBs. This isn't going to be a down year for QBs. Not with Trevor and Tua or even Justin Herbert or Jalen Hurts in Lincoln Riley's system. At least one of those guys is going to set the bar for the Heisman quite high this year and i just don't see any way Jonathan Taylor or Etienne is going to be good enough to clear that hurdle.

That leaves me looking pretty much just at QBs with upside. So beyond Trevor and Tua I'm looking at Hurts, Ehlinger, Fromm, Fields, Herbert, etc. There really aren't that many.

It would be interesting if the NFL execs

Jul 15, 2019, 10:50 AM

Voted on the Heisman, because winning hasn't translated to that level very well. They know...something.

NFL scouts would probably make the best Heisman voters

Jul 15, 2019, 1:05 PM

if the goal is to award the trophy to the best player. The vast majority of Heisman voters (and most fans) don't really know how to evaluate most of the positions on the field. How many people know how to accurately grade OL play? How many people know enough about the game to know what a safety is supposed to be doing on a given play? Offensive players win the Heisman because their impact can be more easily quantified by stats. You can even pretend to know a lot about offensive players without even watching them play by looking up theirs stats.

I honestly think you have some sort of argument fetish.

Either way, Justin Fields isn't winning the Heisman.

He's a big name playing for a popular school that will be ranked high. None of that means he'll win it, but lots of people will place bets on him for those reasons. It's the same reason Hurts is so high on there, and why Kelly Bryant has odds at all. Well with Bryant, it's the having a big name part at least.

Vegas thinks (knows) that Heisman voters don’t actually watch games but just listen to the sEcSPN hype machine.
Hope Trevor dazzles everyone against A&M and Dabo let’s him accrue some stats early on.
