Two Clemson baseball players enter transfer portal

Redshirt freshman right-hander Carter Raffield and redshirt junior outfielder Bo Majkowski have entered the transfer portal, TigerNet confirmed Friday afternoon. Raffield held a 5.68 ERA with a 1.79 WHIP with an 0-2 record over eight appearances in his first full season since elbow surgery after his Read Update »

Makes you wonder...

May 28, 2021, 3:20 PM

Are they fed up with the program.

or

Did Monte tell them they're not going to see playing time next year, hoping they would leave so he could make room for more players to bring in.

As you can see, they evidently did not have it at this level. Basing this only on amount of time played.

A lot of talented players ride the pine for Monte

What makes me wonder is why all these players don’t get a chance when the ones on the field are struggling so much. Is it bias or does it mean that recruitment is overrated or development sucks?

You kept hearing good things about Carter each off season but he was definitely inconsistent. I think Bo was just a miss altogether. He was a product of recruiting Davis Sharpe and the coaches seeing him play either with Sharpe or against Sharpe. There are about 3 or 4 guys they recruited only bc of what they saw while recruiting Sharpe. Obviously that type of recruiting tactic was a mistake. I have never been high on Sharpe. I don't know if he just regressed but I was never impressed his freshmen year with the bat in his hand. Obviously he has some natural movement on his fastball but his secondary and tertiary pitches leave something to be desired. I don't see any development of pitchers who come in not already adequate with a second and third pitch. So I am not happy with the pitching development of this team. I think See needs to go and I believe Monte needs to change his hitting approach. This is college baseball and if Clemson baseball has proved anything to us over the past few years is that when you just put the ball in play the defense is liable to drop a popup, throw the ball in the dugout or not even cover the base. When your hitting approach is homerun or strikeout you put zero pressure on the opposing defense. No defense is perfect and if you can scratch home a run every other game off of defensive errors that can be the difference between post season or no post season. I just have so many questions/issues with this team it's hard to even focus long enough to jot them down.

I wish bo and carter got more time just bc of what could of been sparks being more of a veteran approach. I think carter could have been great pitcher just get through control issues and stop trying to blow it past guys. Good news is fairy should be back. I think only ones who should go to draft is kier and Parker. Rest should come back especially teo. Would love for Parker and kier to come back. But see should be let go and get us a hitting coach!

Man, you know its all about launch angle, speed of bat, speed of ball leaving bat, only left-handed batters can hit lefties and vice versa, etc. You have to only use the analytics, that is how you win!! It's none of this see ball/hit ball or bunting or sticking with the batter that already has 2 hits and a walk, gotta replace him because they changed pitchers hands.

Obviously being sarcastic, since many seem to miss sarcasm on tnet but that is a simplistic view of what I see from Monte-ball. There is none of just putting ball in play.

I used to complain about all the small ball that Jack played, then Monte changed bats and many said that is why our long ball jumped dramatically. But it was actually being coached. Now it makes 100% understandable why Monte's best years will be his first 3-4. So the guys that had small ball coaching from Jack then combine long ball coaching from Monte, the team had been coached both concepts therefore the quality at bats were much better. Plus add in the slugger Beer who would make any team look better, and you have decent team. But when you get into playoffs and pitching is better where long ball goes down, Monte couldn't coach small ball therefore he gets blitzed in regional.

Monte's only hope is to make coaching changes and then he only gets another year if team still remains similar in play and record. He has talent, that isn't the problem. If he doesn't make changes then he needs to find another place to work. That's my .02 anyway, which probably isn't worth much with inflation.

My kid played baseball in high school and had a bunch of friends play in college.

LOTS of kids start at one school and finish at another or stop playing when they realize they aren't going to get much or any playing time.

It's normal for this to happen and you are only hearing about it because of the transfer portal being scanned because of the changes in football and basketball.

I'd say less than half of the kids that are playing baseball in college are still at the same school and on the baseball team 3 years later.

The main thing is they want to play. If they are position players and not playing they aren't going to wait and hope to get playing time later.

Very well said. Totally different than other team sports where you tend to have substitutions. They're not on a team if they're not competitive and it's natural to think you're better than the next guy. You tend to see a lot of swap from p5 to mid major both ways... Especially a kid that knows he's not going into a farm system. They'll go to a PC or coc to get plenty of playing time and an education.

I do think Monte and assistants could do better damaging the situation and recruiting the kid that understand the natural progression. Little different for pitchers... But take Alex Urban, started the first couple series then replaced. Why? Because he had a bad series against the coots. Perhaps. He should have played against Louisville series with the smaller ballpark in Charlotte. He hits a ton of high fly balls. Usually outs at DK but berm outs that perhaps would been long balls in Charlotte. Roster management.

We'll probably see a couple more but it won't mean the team is falling apart.
