It's a "soccer thing". American teams - professional and college - want to be like the international soccer teams so they've adopted their names...

The second part of many European club names was added based on characteristics of the team. For example:

Rovers = No fixed pitch or grounds for games
Wednesday = Originally the day of the week they played
Real "Royal" = Royal Patronage
City = Representative of the City itself
United = Represents greater area or was originally multiple clubs

In this case I would say Clemson United is representative of the greater Clemson area. Yes a bit of a stretch and likely decided it sounded good.
