About this same time, as a small boy living in a prefab on Williamson Road, I remember my Dad (‘50) carrying me on his shoulders to a bond fire somewhere near Fike. I got upset because they burned a “chicken.” Dad explained it wasn’t a real chicken, so I guess lots of papier-mâché mascots got burned in those days. Great fun!

Remember Gator Farr?!

He would be at our student pep rallies (at the Amphitheater) and cause us all to go into an induced delirious state with his diatribe concerning the Cockks!

I went many times to the Gamecock funeral. I believe it was preached early in the week prior to the Big Thursday game in Columbia. We always played at the SC stadium during State Fair week. Gator Farr lived in Florida and came to Clemson every year to preach out of the Sears Roebuck catalog and the place was filled. The gamecock was in a small casket and after the funeral it was burned in a bonfire near our stadium. People would come from all over the upstate.

I was in grad school in Columbia at the school with a horseshoe in 1975. I stayed in the grad dorm and across Sumter Street was the frat house where the paper mache tiger for "tiger burn" was stored. The thought crossed my mind to "accidently" toss a lit cigarette on to the tiger, but I chickened out and decided to not do it. Would have loved to see all those frat boys running around trying to put out that fire.
