Was at that game - don't remember if it was that game or a road game at Duke the year before then or the year after when Duke fullback "Greasy" Calabrese fumbled 5 times and we won by 3 points - had some close games in those years.

I remember a 3-2 game we won over Duke.***

I remember him being the first to do Monday Night Football in 1970. I think Cosell drove him away. I remember him doing NBA playoff games with Bill Russell in the early '70s. Great Knick/Celtic match ups. I remember him trying to call Chris Chambliss' pennant winning home run in '76, but Cosell would have none of it. And of course, all the college football games. Some career. Will be missed.

Curious observation on Cosell having none of it

Jan 13, 2018, 5:48 PM

I don't get it. So was he the lead caller or not?

Re: Curious observation on Cosell having none of it

No. Cosell was supposed to be the analyst, but he stepped all over Keith. It should have been an historic call for Jackson, but Cosell could not keep his mouth shut.

Loved him

Jan 13, 2018, 5:51 PM

Iconic in the vein of a generation of callers we all remember: McKay, Enberg, Musberger (still going?).

I loved: Fum-BULL!! and also Hello Heisman! on Desmond's return.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's terrible. My earliest CFB memories are Keith Jackson

Jan 13, 2018, 6:37 PM

calling big bowl games. Iconic voice.

I think they had him as a guest in the booth for a game last year and he sounded dreadful though.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

he will be sorely missed

Jan 13, 2018, 9:22 PM

In many ways he was Jim Phipps to college Football. And our next three years of national championships are for them both! GO TIGERS!

We lost one of the best. Keith Jackson is legendary. Today's TV sportscasters don't hold a candle to his voice and neutral bent. I've missed him. Can't say that about many.

He called the 1978 Gator Bowl

Jan 14, 2018, 9:42 AM

Keith Jackson and Ara Parseghian (I believe) called the 1978 Gator Bowl between Clemson and Ohio State. I believe that game is on YouTube if you want to hear Jackson’s unmistakable voice calling a Tiger victory. There is something very unique about game callers like Jackson that today’s announcers just don’t have. Maybe it’s because he and others like him got his start in radio and had to paint pictures for his audience and developed a tone of voice perfect for the delivery. Think of our beloved Jim Phillips and the warm way he welcomed fans to a Clemson broadcast and the way he called a game. Check out the 1980 Clemson-SC game on YouTube that features the radio broadcast over the TV broadcast and you’ll get a flavor for how it would be if he was on TV. I just don’t think today’s TV announcers have what guys like Jackson, Phillips, and even South Carolina’s Bob Fulton have. None of them have the distinctive voices and delivery that they had in the old days.

He was a good announcer, but he wimped out at this game. He did not even mention Hayes hitting the Clemson player even though it was obvious to all watching on TV.

They almost always wimp out when one of the big schools does something wrong.

Grew as a kid listening to Keith Jackson on Saturday afternoons. There were only 3 networks back then. He was the best to listen to, he made the game exciting. Always was impressed that he showed no favorites. He was the best ever for watching sports on tv
