Win-win situation for the youngsters. Thought he should have gone in against Syracuse when KB got knocked out.
Well does this take the portal monkey off CDS’s back?

We took a grad transfer QB (Olson) from Stanford a while back when Chad Kelly was dismissed. Hunter would be a grad transfer, so not really portal cherry popping IMO.

My thoughts exactly, he was our best option to win that game.
In reality, he should have prepped, and started that game. KB was hurt, and couldn't run. He was a sitting duck back there.
I still say the Tigers win that game, if Hunter Johnson starts.
On a side note. I've always thought Tee Higgins signed, because Hunter Johnson committed first.

I was going to joke about this when I heard he was transferring, but this is excellent news! If DJ doesn’t improve, Klubnik will take over, and Hunter Johnson gives us a great backup as well as potential starter while Klubnik learns the playbook (assuming DJ transfers).
Go Tigers!

I hope that DJ does well. Though I question whether he will reach it, DJ probably has a bigger upside with his size and arm strength. To me the thing Hunter returning does is even up the competition.
We always think about the best player playing, but what Dabo says is that he will play the one that gives us the best chance of winning. Without Johnson, I think if it was close that DJ would get the nod because there would be less chance of Klubnik transferring out. Klubnik could make the team better but DJ could give us the best chance to win by having a quality back up if needed.
With the addition of Johnson, the best player and the one that gives us the best chance to win becomes one and the same. As you said Johnson will not need the playing time to present a positive attitude and influence which sets him apart from a lot of transfers. I aSSume that few people expect him to beat out Cade and DJ, but I expect him to give everything that he has got for one more shot at his dream. However, I still expect him to be a positive influence if he ends up third on the depth chart.
I am not sure that we could have found a better person to fill out the QB room for the QB room next year.

This is awesome. What a great day to be a Tiger. Definitely win win for everyone. This is what great coaches do !!!!! We are so blessed to have Dabo.
This speaks volumes on how special Clemson and Dabo is. No talk, Dabo walks it. Not about W/L's - Dabo, making the world a better place one man at a time.

He probably could've started some last year had he stayed put. At least we got some decent depth and options now. Everyone should be even to start Spring and let the battle begin.

Welcome back Hunter. We've been pulling for you at Northwestern and are happy to have you back in Tiger Town.
I wonder if this is the first time someone has portaled out and then later portaled back in.

Also, CBS Sportsline was reporting that HJ contacted Dabo about any available GA spot.

an older, experienced QB back on the team. I know we all have high expectations for Cade but it is very hard for a true freshman to show up and take over the starting position at QB. Having Hunter at Clemson will only make us better - both from a competition and depth perspective.
Regardless of who starts next year - having a standup, mature guy like Hunter who has been through his share of highs and lows is going to be a positive for our QB room.

I’m ok with the signing. QB is a tricky position to recruit and our need for next year is mostly depth related. With a top recruit coming in who will need reps and an imbedded (albeit shaky) starter already in place, we aren’t really an attractive transfer destination for any of the top names.
While someone like Bo Nix would be a better football talent and have a realistic shot at taking DJ’s starter position, then you are probably pushing DJ to the portal and potentially creating a locker room issue.
Adding HJ gives a warm body that can probably hold it down if the worst case scenario occurs, but also won’t be a cancer if stuck holding a clipboard all season. He’ll know his role and support Cade and DJ, which will be a unique trait in this marketplace.
This isn’t going to move us up any preseason rankings, but minimal downside risk. Pretty on brand for Dabo. Decent call IMO.

That’s unbelievable. I realize the rankings aren’t relevant any more when they have multiple years of college experience to evaluate them, but an interesting fact none the less.
Huge for us and hopefully for him. A very experienced senior who isn’t just looking for PT. A rising junior who hopefully can get healthy and back to what we know he can be. A true freshman who looks amazing. That’s a lot to work with. To say nothing of Hunter Helms who I think has performed admirably as a backup.

And another leader in locker room. Hunter may be thinking it’s time to change gears to a coaching future, or remembering the young ladies at Clemson are cute. In any event, he gives the team and coaches more options. Great move.

When you read that article it sounds like girlfriend coming with him or she's here and they've stayed in touch. This can be huge for DJ from a mental perspective as well as possible curbing future transfers... The grass ain't always greener. Not that these are reasons he's back, just potential positives.
Sure would be nice to get Skalski on the sidelines as a GA... If he doesn't get NFL contract.

I had not thought about the aspect of being able to pass on his experience of transferring. It was probably his best option considering Trevor was coming in and he could not have planned for a COVID year, but it will be good to have someone that can explain that it is not all rainbows and lollipops.

He brings some depth that would certainly help. The first thing that comes to mind is potential Covid-19 problems not being as bad if the starter and the perhaps the 1st backup fails a test. Allows perhaps for better red shirting to save a QB like Cade from being thrust into the spotlight too soon. I wonder what they promised him or if it was all him? Future coaching assistant?
At this point I think the reputation of his degree is the primary interest. If you know your football career is not likely to go anywhere getting a degree from Clemson certainly won't hurt him. Plus he knows what a great place this is. Good for him...good for Clemson too. It underscores that players want to be here.

Think about it he gets a chance to get a 2nd master's degree for free I might add. Secondly, if he were to win in camp this off-season, playing time would be the icing on the cake!!! Lastly, hunter can still play...

Great get IMO and looks like CDS is aware that there could be a QB transfer and this gives a quality experienced backup if that does occur or if a major injury to QB1 happens. Hopefully not in either case, but we’re in a lot better shape now if it does.
