Former Clemson WR waived in final roster cuts
Former Clemson WR Cornell Powell was among the last roster cuts by the Kansas City Chiefs this week to settle the 53-man roster ahead of next week's season start. Powell will look to land somewhere else or make a practice squad now. He was selected by the Chiefs in the fifth round of the NFL draft i Read Update » |

Maybe KC really wasn't the team that was meant for you.

Kind of unusual...

that a drafted rookie doesn't make the team’s 53-man roster.
I hate it for him but I said at the time he would have benefitted from another year at the collegiate level.

Yeah, agree. As you stated below, might be his practice skills. It's just so many spots unfortunately. Had Ngata and Ladson been healthy all year, how many reps does he get.
He'll get another chance to sharpen his skills. Maybe this is what he needed to get that little extra. Either way, he'll be fine with a Clemson degree.

Gonna be hard to get that combination back- now that the Texans are keeping Watson and basically benching him- I wonder if it would be hard to be paid $10.6 million to ride the bench?

They’ll pick him up on the practice squad Or Jacksonville might pick him up for Trevor.

I was kind of surprised he was drafted, but I thought we were hearing good things. What a bummer. I think he can still work his way in there though, as far as the NFL goes.

That’s just it Shack - he’s NOT a gamer

He was at Clemson for YEARS, underperforming and never making the starting line up until all the better receivers in front of him were either injured or had gone on to the NFL. After YEARS of benefiting from being a part of one of the elite programs in college football, he was decent in his final season. Not dominant, not the best receiver on the team.
Let’s face it - Powell was a bust at Clemson. A late bloomer who never lived up to the hype in college and isn’t going fare any better where the talent is even better. Maybe he can go play in Canada.

He gamed for us in a desperate fashion last year. Super physically strong receiver that has nice hands, he's not done in the NFL. Speed isn't great but its definitely enough.

I'm surprised. The way he played last year I thought he would make the team but I'm sure he will somewhere

5th rounders don't get cut often - CP maybe needed to go

to a team struggling at the WR position? I liked how he waited his turn at Clemson - I was really pulling for him.

Actually, 5th rounders are regularly cut and resigned

to the practice squad. I'm surprised that they only kept 5 active receivers, but I'm not familiar with KC's roster so, I can only assume that they are expecting a number of catches to go to TE's and RB's...

better than even the GM, so like I expected, he's resigned to the practice squad. CP's production in the preseason did not warrant an active roster spot, at least he gets to practice with the team and continue to build the coach's confidence that they can use him should any of the active receivers go down.

The chiefs are loaded at receiver. Hard fit to make that squad. Hopefully he gets picked up. If Charone Peak can play a few years, Powell will make a team somewhere.

Hopefully, he gets picked up! I liked C. Powell. I thought he played his position well last year and never complained or ran when he wasn't getting a lot of playing time. Kid will do well in life with that never-give-up mentality. And, hey man, "it's the Kansas City Chiefs WR room"! Hard to make it there.
Good luck #17

Hope he finds a spot on another team. He was clutch for us last year.
