Former Clemson quarterback passes away
CLEMSON, S.C. — Former Clemson All-ACC quarterback Harvey White passed away on Saturday, Nov. 6. The native of Greenwood, S.C. was 83 years old. White was a 1960 graduate of Clemson University and worked for many years for the American National Can Company. He retired from that company in 1993. Whit Read Update » |

Harvey White who could ever forget him. Saw him play at every home game in the valley in 1959. 1pm start times. Frank Howard coach and Frank Howard thought Harvey was great. And so did I. Fans Met on the field after every game and talked to players. Saw Roman Gabriel NCSU QB play in the valley. Brian Piccolo RB Wake Forest played in the valley. I Never missed a home game from 1959-1966.(Student body about 3000-4000 range at the time).

Harvey gave me a lot of great memories in my early years as a Tiger fan. Probably my favorite memory was the 33-31 win over Wake Forest (Norm Snead as QB). He had a great backfield consisting of George (Pogo) Usry, Doug Kline, and Bill Mathis, and great receivers (Sam Anderson and Gary Barnes). He was a great Tiger!

Definitely recall him. That was my first game as a 12 year old. Saw them play Furman the next week in G'ville.

Have some great memories of Harvey and Lowndes qbing our TIGERS. Both were from Greenwood. Lowndes left this world in 1963 and Harvey completed his final pass in 2021. RIP Mr. White. Thanks for being a TIGER!!

Didn't he platoon with Lowndes Shingler? Seems to me they each had an offensive team that they quarterbacked, but it's been a long time ago and I was pretty young then. The Sugar Bowl loss was to LSU and Billy Cannon, right? 7-0 sticks in my mind. We were big underdogs I believe.

You are right on all counts. And if I recall correctly, the LSU coach was Paul Deitzel... and the LSU defensive squad was called "The Chinese Bandits."

So many fond memories of Harvey White. He was Clemson's first great passing QB, and he could run the ball and play DB too. Back then, substitution was very limited and players played both O and D. The starters usually played about the first half of a quarter, and the second team played until the quarter ended. If a player was too injured to leave the field, his team was charged a time out.
I had the good fortune to see Harvey play at least one game every year of his Clemson career, including seeing him slaughter the gamecocks' freshman team with his passes in 1956. That Clemson class had White, George Usry, Bill Mathis, Doug Cline, Harold Olson, Lou Cordileone, and some other good ones. All Clemson fans knew that the late 1950s would be good years.
Most of my memories were from listening to Clemson games on the radio, and never more than one TV game a year.
Harvey White's most remembered play was his last game, the Bluebonnet Bowl against TCU. The Tigers were down 7-3 in the middle of the 4th quarter. We had the ball; 3rd down and 18 on our 32 yard line; things looked dim. Gary Barnes broke open on a long post pattern (similar to Collins last Saturday), and Harvey hit him on the numbers. Gary ran away from the defender and broke the game open. That play won the game. TCU was whipped, and we scored two more quick TDs to win 23-7.
Another remembered play was in the 1957 Big Thursday game defeat of the gamecocks. White hit Whitey Jordan with a long pass, and Whitey caught the ball and was running for an easy TD. But, Whitey dropped the ball on the 1 yard line. Back then, a fumble could not be advanced, and Whitey fell on the ball. If we had not run it in on the next play, Coach Howard might have killed Whitey.

My boyhood hero ca. fifth and sixth grades. Saw him play at the valley a couple of times, but mostly listened to the games on the radio with my Dad (class of 46.) Met him many years later at a tailgate. A great guy and great Tiger. RIP, Harvey.

and what a win and day for me since a youthful RAT-capped freshman and all eyes & ears what with the chants, electric feel of the crowd, etc.
After playing them EVERY Year there, since 1897 due to decree of the SC Legislature, little ole ClemPson was to host the Coccks the next year in TigerTown for the 1st time ever!!
And even Coach Frank Howard was happy about that & the huge win for an upcoming bowl invite in that he tipped his hat towards the opposite side lines to say “You're Welcome & Good Bye Buddy!”

I was at the final Big Thursday in 1959 and at the first game in the Valley in 1960. I vividly remember Shingler being tackled for a safety on the final play of the first half to make the halftime score 3-2. Then Clemson scored a safety and a touchdown (Elmo Lamb, I think) in the second half and shut out the Coots for a 12-2 final score. Oh, man... what good memories...

I saw him play -> kinda as I was just a kid sliding down the Hill on cardboard.
Tigers have a rich history of great athletes.
