Does anyone HATE David Hale as much as I do??? Honestly to the point that if I see him in public I will probably catch an assault charge.. Never met the man but anyone that thinks and provokes the way he does needs a beating.

Same a$$hat that jumped on the Dabo is a racist bandwagon.

Would not mind if his brakes failed. Just sayin’.

More likely he still is butt-hurt over the presser where he asked about "Clemsoning", and Dabo disciplined him :)

His selective memory says that Clemson is looking to be in rarefied air, his selective memory has failed him, if it's rarefied air, then UGA, and OSU has been kept out of it more than Clemson bc, we have been in the playoffs more than they have, and have won more NC in that rarefied air since the playoffs has been in existence, maybe he should be reminded of that!!!!!!!

I can translate for y’all:

“We at ESPN have always thought Dabo was an amusing real estate agent. Now that he’s lost the real coaches on his staff he’s toast”.

“Also, Venables has never coached a college game, but since he’s the reason Clemson has been winning, and because OU has been to the playoffs before, he’s definitely at the top… equal or above Dabo. “

That’s how I read it anyway.

Well I personally don't believe that BV could start off as a HC the same way that Dabo did, and win the way that Dabo has, not even at Oklahomo, a school that has recruited well!!!

What is absolutely a fact, just bc we missed the playoffs last season, it doesn't make Dabo, and Clemson any less of a winner than any of the teams that they love talking about while they try to talk down about Dabo, and our Tigers!!!! IMHO, when they talk down about Dabo and our Tigers with no other teams or coaches doing as well as Dabo/Clemson, and Saban/Bama, in the past 10 years, it only means one thing when they do that, it means they are A$$HOLE suckers at the highest level, and there's none better at it than they are. Deep down, when they think about what they have said about Dabo/Clemson, and not Saban/Bama, I'm sure it has to enter their minds at some point, that they are really A$$HOLE suckers bc of the way they have treated Dabo, and Clemson bc all they have done is win, and done it the right way, and it has angered them, bc it's the truth!!!

Aug 23, 2022, 12:37 PM

to see on the field before I can definitively say we are CFP worthy. You gotta admit, that offense was crazy bad last year. WR's couldn't stay healthy, line was porous, and DJU was really inconsistent and looked scared. But i would think another year of experience should help alleviate a lot of that.

Defensively we have the personnel to be elite, provided that our offense can sustain some drives so we aren't gassed late. But we gotta remember we have two BRAND new coordinators on both sides of the ball. And Venables was a great preparer and analyzer of opposing offenses. Can we move on and not miss a beat in general and in crucial situations? Im pretty sure we can but again, I gotta see it first.

Tier 2 just means, show me first. I can see it.

Aug 23, 2022, 9:30 PM

Admittedly when will swinney is in the starting rotation at wr, it makes it a little bit tough for any QB to be successful. I mean swinney is a good athlete but not the athlete Cornell Powell and Amari Rodgers were last year. For all the dj haters out there, just think what he could do this year with a healthy stable of wide receivers and what seems like the makings of a pissed off and upset offensive line. Just saying...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: hey.. you gotta go prove it. As a Clemson fan, even I need

Aug 24, 2022, 1:32 AM

Even Dabo commented about Will Swinney having to start since none of our starters or regular backups were available due to injury. DJ having a splint on the index finger of his throwing hand didn't help his performance. As for this article, consider the source and his past criticisms. The AP and Coaches' polls have Clemson ranked in the top 4, which completely offsets one individual's opinion and projects us into the CFP. Lastly, our players have something to prove--they know this more than we do.

But truth be told, I believe our OC, OL coach and TE coach are all upgrades this year just like our new DL coach. Also glad to hear the TE's bragging on DJ and Cade following summer practices. It's way early, still I see a new fire with this team, and it's healthier, more talented and hungrier than last season ... Go Tigers!

Aug 24, 2022, 3:36 PM [ in reply to hey.. you gotta go prove it. As a Clemson fan, even I need ]

Absolutely, even though I hate admitting it, I have put most of the blame on DJ, but if I'm honest to self, the entire offense was incredibly terrible last season, and to be as awful as we were, it couldn't have been just bc DJ was out of shape and not playing up to the same potential that we saw him play in the two games of 2020 when Trevor had covid. It was easy to blame DJ when there was a lot of players on that offense that just didn't play up to their potential either, but mainly with about the entire offense beat up with injury, or past nagging injuries.

But, this coming season with mostly everybody recovered, and our backups playing with more experience, hopefully we will learn early on if DJ is the QB that we thought he would be after his 2020 play. My hopes are that DJ will step on the field and be the great QB that we thought we thought he would be after the sample we saw a little of in 2020. IMO, that would be the best thing for our coaches, DJ, Klubnik, and our FB team.

That would give our coaches a chance to work Klubnik in when the time was right with getting him ready to take the reins the start of of 2023 when he will need the experience, and not having to be thrown in there to take over for a bad playing DJ before next season.

IMO, Klubnik needs this coming season to get his body right with a few more pounds of muscle weight, and the time for Klubnik to have another off season for the offensive coaches to have all their adjustments made with the plays they will keep, and the plays that will be taken out for their offensive plan.

This season could be made easy for all if that can happen, but it all depends on if DJ plays well, and most of the offensive changes can be run mostly when they put Klubnik in, and getting him ready to take over next season. IMO that would be a perfect plan if DJ plays well, and I do hope that he does bc he is a Clemson man, and I pray that it works out well for him this season, and when he leaves, I hope that it's with loving Clemson even more than when he came to Clemson, and he can't wait to get back to Clemson every chance that he can, over leaving and not ever wanting to come back for visits!!!

Lot of talking going on right now. Best to just avoid most of it because as of right now no one knows anything definitive. Clemson takes care of business on the field then all this doubt will fade.

Not sure of the "why" but I am not concerned in the least with the new coaches. There will definitely be some growing pains in the beginning, which I am going ahead and gearing myself for, but Dabo has seemed to put the right people in the right spots. In a few months we will know more.

Nothing is for sure, but based on the spring and summer most of us here know this year’s team is very good. We know we will be better at QB, one way or another. There’s nothing wrong with us going along with our knowledge and believing we are a playoff team.

The part about "promoting from within" as if it was

Aug 23, 2022, 1:01 PM

somehow a thing only a second tier school would do is what confuses me.

Dabo modeled his program after the best of the best in the corporate world. In a really good business, the CEO or someone very close to the CEO always has an idea of who will move into any given position should that position come open unexpectedly or otherwise. It's actually seen as a sign of weakness when the company is forced to go outside to fill openings because it suggests that management isn't smart enough to keep a strong bench. Promoting from within generally causes the least disruption and therefore the best continuity for what is already a strong business.

So why, Mr. Hale, is college athletics an exception to this practice? Seems to me the fact that we already have qualified people in house should be a sign that we're doing it right.

Re: The part about "promoting from within" as if it was

Our two best coordinators to-date under Dabo were not internal hires. It's fair to be cautious of two unproven coordinators

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Your point is well taken but 3-4 years into his tenure

Aug 23, 2022, 2:15 PM

is not the same as 14 years.

I may have to eat crow but I am looking forward to watching Wes Goodwin and Thomas Austin coach this season. I have high hopes for Brandon Streeter but nagging doubts as well.

One thing is for sure, in about 120 days we can use 20-20 hindsight to answer all these questions.

Steele and Spence, so it goes both ways. Napier was pretty bad also, but dab of might have been dabbling instead of letting Napier run it. Probably though Napier was young and then over his head at the time.

Anyway, I think Goodwin is going to do a fantastic job. I think Streeter has a lot of potential to succeed, but we'll see how it go on the field.

Promoting from within on the defensive side probably

Aug 23, 2022, 4:32 PM [ in reply to The part about "promoting from within" as if it was ]

wouldn't have caused anyone to bat an eye. Promoting from within on offense is a little concerning because of how bad our offense was last year combined with the growing sentiment (that began before last year) that our offense is getting stale. I think it's a fair concern that we are running it back with the same system rather than looking to the outside for some fresh ideas.

This is not 17 or 19 when we were defending champions so we have to show that injuries took away last year from us. Wanting to get back to the top of the mountain is what we all want but we have rack up the wins and as Dabo will say, the rest will take care of itself.

Orange glasses will likely prevent many from agreeing though.

Also, David Hale isn't that bad. He writes plenty of positive things about our program too.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No it’s not. If we have another year like last, I can see where “Tier 2” is warranted.

Aug 23, 2022, 5:51 PM

But did Ohio State make the playoffs last year?

Has Jawja made 6 straight playoffs and won 2 Championships in the playoff era?

When Bammer didn’t make the playoffs in 2019 did that make them “Tier 2?” Heck no! And all these dumbaces didn’t learn a dern thing from that!!!

~JKB

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

For this season it is fair

Aug 24, 2022, 8:21 AM

We should not be a tier 1 title contender THIS year with so many concerns on offense and two new coordinators.

Bama and Ohio State have the two best QBs in the country. Bama also has Nick Saban. Ohio State also has arguably the best offensive personnel, top to bottom, of anybody in the country and a coach who's proven himself to be an excellent play caller. I think OSU probably fields the #1 offense this year. They do need to get a little better defensively.

Georgia just won it last year, has the best defensive coach/recruiter in the country at HC, and fielded an underrated top 10-15 offense last year with Stetson Bennet at QB. They lost a good many pieces on defense, which is why they are 3rd rather than top 2, but with how well Kirby has recruited I would be very surprised if Georgia doesn't field another top 5ish defense.

Meanwhile, Clemson has a defense that could potentially be the best in the country, but it's being led by a guy that's never even been a position coach. His play calling experience is 1 bowl game. He might be awesome, but we don't know that for sure yet. We do know the guy is trying to replace was/is awesome.

And on the other side of the ball we fielded one of the worst offenses in the P5 last season. We need to get better on the OL, we need to get much better at WR, and we need to get much, much better at QB. We also need Streeter to step in, and honestly, do a better job than Tony Elliott did the last couple of years.

That's alot of question marks, and alot of things that need to go right for us to contend for a national title. Certainly far more question marks than the top 3 that are tier 1 title contenders.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm tired of all the predictions!!

There are only 3 teams in Tier 1, so somebody outside of Tier 1 will be in the playoffs. I think most analysts, even at ESPN, would consider Clemson the best out of the 4 teams listed in Tier 2. It seems like a pretty realistic spot to me, although the comment about not embracing NIL, the portal, and the forward pass last year, was uncalled for.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: ESPN ranks Clemson in 'Tier 2' for college football preseason

Aug 24, 2022, 6:21 AM

I’m all for running the ball down the opposing teams throats if it is effective. Why pass if you can get 3-4 yards a clip, and when they bring another in the box to stop the run open it back up. Run game was a savior for the offense last year. Coming up watching in the 80’s there was very little passing and Clemson wore a lot of defenses out by the fourth quarter. Fun to watch.
