I mean, I’m sure those guys know more than I do what their teammates can do or what they need to see. But if it’s even a remote possibility that DJ’s performance this year was in part due to the pressure of starting at a premier program, then at least give him the reprieve if high expectations going into 2022. And I don’t think he needs to hear this for confidence…the coaches sang his praises all season.
As everyone else said, nothing would make me happier but maybe we can just be silent on this point for now?

He really needs to step up - lose some weight, get fit, and learn the offense. All this hype was there last year too. I don't care for Heismans. Just NC.

Pretty sure I watched the Notre Dame game he lost. You know, the same team that Trevor torched up later and sat out the last half of.

If he didn't impress you last year when Trevor was out, there is no hope for you and/or the prejudice you must possess for anything, and everything, Clemson. He didn't impress much this year, and that's for sure, but last year is what put him on the radar as a Heisman candidate. We'll see about next year when he proves his value through his skills and leadership, if it's there, or if it's not. Time will tell for that, but you lost all credibility by opining that you were not impressed with his performances last year. Bye, bye cootie pie!

I would bet that most QB's start out their careers as backups. It's a tough position to start at right out of HS, and when one does come along who wins the Heisman, it's not in his Freshman year. Their may have been exceptions that I am not aware of, but most take some time to master the system they run and to get notoriety necessary for a Heisman run and the votes needed to win it. I just want our QB, whoever he is, to be a leader on and off the field, who can run the offense and be accurate as a passer and with his decisions. And, oh by the way, I want the moon, too. It's a big ask, but we've seen it get done at Clemson several times.

I think Deshaun should have won the Heisman in 2016. But to act like it was stolen from him is stupid. Prior to the 2016 championship game, Jackson had outperformed him. Deshaun had better passing stats, but Lamar, in addition to having great passing stats (60% completions for 3500 yards, 31 TDs, and 9 picks), added 1,600 rushing yards and 21 rushing touchdowns. I'd give it to Deshaun based on winning and one of the two greatest national title games of all time, but it's not insane to give it to Lamar. He basically had a season that was statistically Trevor + Etienne.
I don't see any argument for Trevor to have ever won it. He was great as a freshman, but only played a partial season. Second year, Trevor was blown away by Burrow in every metric, who had the greatest season for a QB in history. I mean, he played a very hard schedule, went undefeated, and completed 77% of his passes for 5,700 passing yards, 60 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. Trevor was 65% for 3,700 yards, 36 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. Burrow had 500 yards and 6 touchdowns against Clemson in the title game. Third year, Trevor's stats were barely better than Smith, a receiver. You have to take off the orange-tinted glasses if you think Trevor was robbed.

DW and Lamar Jackson's stats were comparable in 2016
[2]
Dec 13, 2021, 1:45 PM
|
|
|
DW had a thousand more passing yards and 11 more passing TDs than Jackson while LJ had a thousand more rushing yards and 12 more rushing TDs and DW won the head to head and the national championship while LJ and Louisville lost the last 3 games of the season. But I'll concede it could have gone either way.
However, the 2015 Heisman was given to Derrick Henry with about 2200 yards rushing and 28 TDs along with under a hundred receiving yards and no receiving TDs and no return yardage. DW had 4000+ passing yards and 35 TDs along with 1000+ rushing yards and 12 rushing TDs. Hard to justify Henry getting it over McCaffrey and Watson.

Heisman winners need big passing stats, and with the stable of running backs we have, seems doubtful DJ would have that. It looked like we were becoming more of a “run first” team in the last few games. Just my opinion.

Why they don’t wait for the season to be over is one of multiple stupid things about the award.
Lack of clear criteria is another.

him hardly at all this year! Look how much we miss Trevor! Trevor was 10 times more important to our success than Smith was to Bama's! Receivers typically don't touch the ball but 10-12 times per game...quite different with the QB!

I really lost all interest in the Heisman award, which is supposed to go to the best college football player in America, when neither Deshawn Watson nor Trevor Lawrence won the award. Both earned it and deserved to receive it more than the recipients. Trevor and Deshawn were the best players in the country at those times. The deck is stacked in favor of players from teams who have former winners with votes. Now, it's a meaningless award, except for the winner getting a lot of extra hype, and a lot of extra money, not necessarily deserved. It doesn't necessarily go to the best player in the country, anymore. That's a shame. Something else cheapened, needlessly, to appease a biased media.

Ok let's skip the fact that DJ is on this list for a second.
Do they honestly have Spencer Rattler, who doesn't even have a school to play for, listed ahead of Caleb Williams who is responsible (along with Rattler's poor play) for sending Rattler to the portal?
I guess Vegas is playing chess while everyone else is playing football.

I hope Will Shipley is right I hope DJ has a stellar season I hope together they lead Clemson to another 10 win cfp bound season
But for DJ to win the Heisman, he’d have to put up 2x the passing yards, 4x the passing TDs, and up the completion percentage by at least 10% all to be even considered in the running…
I have faith in him and Brandon Streeter, but I’m not sure he’ll have that quick of a turn around in just one summer…
And with Klubnik coming in, I wonder if DJ will rise to the occasion and become the leader we all know he can be (like he was in the Louisville game) or if he’ll crack under the pressure (like he did in the Georgia game)
But Joe Burrow had a massive one year turnaround when he won the Heisman… so I think it’s possible that Will Shipley is right, DJ will progress nicely, and any doubters (including myself) will be happily proven wrong

Sure. Out of 105 QBs with enough passes to qualify, DJ finished #104 in passer rating, #101 in passing accuracy, #81 in passing yards, #102 in ypa, #97 in touchdowns, threw the 27th most interceptions. If you added 10% in accuracy and doubled his yards and touchdowns and halved his picks, he'd be #43 in accuracy, #7 in passing yards, #54 in touchdowns, and #11 in picks. So if he literally had twice as good a season, he wouldn't get an invite to New York. But no, it's the fans that are wrong. lol.

But this was the year to get it. Not much in terms of dominant talent this year in the country as a whole. The bama kid was good but not elite in my opinion. At least compared to past years.

Really? Maybe you should watch some of Lamar Jackson's games back then. The award could have gone to DW4 and the Louisville fans would be saying the same thing.

The sports journalists submitted their votes too early based on ESPiN's influence, largely after a blow-out win over a very average FSU team that was ranked No. 2 in the nation at the time. All of this was well before LJ completely fell apart losing his last three games to Houston, Kentucky and LSU and playing like $#!7 in the process.
Petrino was playing LJ well into the 4th quarter of blow-out wins just to pad his statistics, something Dabo absolutely did not do with DW4. In the meantime, DW4 was busy leading his team to both a conference and a national championship. I won't even get in DW4 beating Lamarville head-to-head.
Countless sports writers even said afterward they regretted submitting their votes so early in the process. Had they waited longer, they would have voted for DW4.

Lamar was good until teams learned how to play him. If you remember Houston exploited Lamar's weaknesses and Louisville went on a losing streak after that.

I don’t think some one actually saw him play this year. I admit the heisman has become a joke but predicting DJ winning is a mighty big stroke of optimism

I’m soooo sick of these way too early individual award predictions. The Heisman used to never be mentioned until about the last game or two…..as it should be. As I recall he was a Heisman preseason front runner this year as well….obviously a poor selection. I’d say he ranked near the bottom of every QB stat. Heck, he may even lose his starting job. And don’t give me any crap about “the players and parents read these remarks”, “they’re just kids”, etc. These guys are making money now, so the gloves are off now.

Whatever that was there in those two 2020 games can be found in the off-season... then hey, who knows. There was just something missing in 2021... there will be a lot of new pieces in 2022.. a lot of potential.. plus with Cade sitting there at QB2... there will be some competition.

Not gonna speak ill of DJ or any other Tiger player who goes out and gives his best for our team. Nor criticize their play when I haven't walked that proverbial mile in their shoes. What I would question, however, is how being number 7 on the list with +1600 odds qualifies as a "frontrunner." Seriously??

Do those odds assume that he transfers to the real USC? Lincoln Riley has a history of getting transfer QB's to win the Heisman.

??Hmmm..... I believe there was an article last year with the same title!!! ?? Don't get me wrong, I TRULY would Love to see it happen....?? However, He's got A LOT of work to do!!
My first issue with him last season was right after the Georgia game! DJU sat down in the interview looking like "Cam-Newt Jr."!!!! ?????? Primping himself to look cute for the camera!!! An "NIL" issue? ??....Maybe???????? I personally didn't like the appearance of it....I would even think his Mom didn't like it!!! Lol ?? And if he ever starts thinking about transferring because things play-time gets challenging....ie (he loses his starting position).... He's gonna have to face the wrath of his Mom!! She LOVES CLEMSON!!! During his recruitment I recall her stating that, "She Loves CLEMSON, because it's Clean, and it Smells Good"! ?? Lol
Anyway, I Would LOVE to see him play "LIGHTS OUT" in '22, and bring the Heisman back home where it belongs! Honoring Coach Heisman!
GO TIGERS!!! ??
