We have reached one of the traditional markers for a college football season with the release of the preseason Coaches Poll -- Clemson again regarded as one of the main National Championship contenders. From what I can tell, Oklahoma is stacked on both sides of the ball, including returning 8 guys on defense and a Heisman favorite at QB.
I'm not saying I agree, but there's definitely an argument against giving first place to an Alabama team who just lost a deluge of experience & some of its winningest players in their own incredible history.
Plus... week one changes EVERYTHING. The Clemson/UGA game determines who gets to be #1 the day after Labor Day, make no mistake.

Defense simply doesn't define the sport anymore I guess is all.
Plus Oklahoma's defense had nowhere to go but up; IMO, they largely just screwed up tackling but have the dudes to do it, & it's a fundamental fix.
Bottom line, college football comes down to offense now more than ever. I'm not suggesting I agree with Oklahoma being a favorite to win, only answering the question about why people think they'll be competitive.
FWIW, I agree Alabama, Clemson & Ohio State would likely beat Oklahoma if they play this year, but still, hope this helps.

So who cares what the Coaches Poll says.
Here is the unofficial official eSECpn poll:
1)Alabama 2) Georgia 3)Texas A&M 4) Florida 5)LSU 6) Mississippi,7) Oklahoma( only because they are not playing a sec schedule) 8)Notre Dame( too much clout) 9)Clemson(because they are better than the bottom teams in the sec.)and tied for 10th UNC and Miami .
