Clemson OL enters transfer portal

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney held his press conference on Tuesday and shared the latest with his Tigers. Swinney relayed that offensive guard Paul Tchio was entering the transfer portal. "Paul Tchio has left the team," Swinney said. "He has entered the portal." Swinney wished him well on his coll

Here y’all go. It’s always the kid well just maybe the culture of the program is not as healthy as it used to be and maybe Dabo lost focus a little. It happens in leadership all the time. It doesn’t mean that Dabo is bad, it just means that he lost focus. Stop automatically assuming the kid was lazy or had some sort of halts tee flaw. The recruits will see this and pick, Bama and IGA over us

I'm not sure why Bama's and UGA's transfer numbers are relevant. As far as I'm concerned, the Clemson players entering the portal are the only ones I care about, and any underlying issues that may be leading to their decisions. Regardless of what's happening with other teams, this flurry of exits is not healthy for our Tigers. I certainly wish Paul the best no matter what.

Check out the articles here, plenty of top players still like Clemson. The portal is just the portal and everyone is losing players to it.

Why?

Why shouldn't a kid have the opportunity to make money or switch schools of it is better for them?

How does it hurt you, Clemson, or anyone?

Maybe going to Clemson was a bad choice for them or maybe Clemson shouldn't have offered at all?

It's different for sure, but it's not inherently bad.

Nov 9, 2021, 7:01 PM

It sends the wrong message(s). Players are there to get a good education and to play football. To grow into men. Money and materialism ruins or distorts the college experience. Making tons of money can come later AFTER graduation or, if they are good enough, during their NFL careers. What's next after the portal and the NIL? The way things are going it probably won't be good...

Whan you have someone playing better than he was, are some of you suggesting that the coaches to tell them that they have to set out bs the lesser player will get mad and leave if he don't play as much as the guy that is clearly better. IMO, if someone isn't will to out work the guy in front of him for more snaps, well then let him take his ball and go play where there isn't anybody body better than them playing. The problem with that is, they will never get any better bc they have a position locked down where there is no one better than them. Hit the road Jack, and be the loser they're OK with being!!! There just want ever be a place for self centered players on Dabo's team. If they want to be the starter, then they better get to work and earn it, over expecting it!!!!

Since the end of last year we've lost:

Mikey Dukes (RB)
Chez Mellusi (RB)
Demarkcus Bowman (RB)
Lyn J Dixon (RB)
Mike Jones Jr (ILB)
Derion Kendrick (CB)
Paul Tchio (OG)
Jordan Williams (DL)
Nyles Pinckney (DL)

I get that the transfer portal is an easy-out for players looking for more PT....but is that really the case, here? We have a garbage-ass OLINE and the #3 OG in the nation is leaving.

Pretty clear all is not well in paradise. "All In" no longer applies. Culture is changing and I put a lot of that on coaching. We can only speculate because we aren't in the locker room or the meeting rooms but you don't have this much churn by coincidence. I hope there will be a lot of self-reflection and evaluation after this season and Dabo steps up and does the hard things that are needed to right the ship. We need some experienced new blood on the coaching staff to bring a fresher perspective. Enough of raising the young pups. We need seasoned, tested and toughened coaches sprinkled in.

And Pinkney transfered on an extra year as a covid super senior.

Make another list of players that had not seen the writing on the wall and get back with us. Then realize that we will change our approach moving forward. Probably recruit 6 or so scholarships beyond what looks like a full 85 heading into the Spring, because Dabo refuses to use the portal, so that he can use the sales pitch of not doing so to recruits. We will adjust one way or another and those not happy with their own performance within the system they signed up for will continue to move on but Clemson will be better prepared to absorb such attrition moving forward. Covid and the portal hitting simultaneously was the perfect storm, not the Clemson staffing dropping the ball.

its happening more and more sadly across all of football. When one guy goes, so does another. maybe out staff is brutally honest and says..you're a backup, work harder or wait your turn. Alot of kids dont like that.

I get why most of the others left....its not like we lost major players. Mike Jones, maybe, but he was gonna get squeezed eventually or split time and while Williams and Pickney would've played alot this year, it wasnt like that when they left.

I actually forgot about Bowman and its probably bc he barely sees the field in Gainesville. Kendirck didn't really transfer, he got kicked off the team.

Everyone keeps talking about the players arent good and no big loss. If Dabo wants to keep running this as a development program you need to keep the guys to develop. If you want to continue to be a football power house you need to give up that idea and stop trying to be loyal to coaches and players, they leave when they feel they need to. Need to recruit the best coaches and hit the transfer portal of you will keep being unranked. Need to increase recruiting class sizes also. Somehow Alabama does it and keeps winning with new players and coaches. We need to stop being the nice guys, nice guys finish last.

Re: This 4-star, #3 OG in class of 2020.....

[1]
Nov 9, 2021, 2:24 PM

I'll agree with larger recruiting classes would be beneficial opposed to putting walk on players on scholly but Alabama has lost just as many players to the portal if not more. Bama has had more success this season at qb but other than that they are struggling overall as opposed to dominant Bama form. The portal is always gonna look promising to benched players that were highly touted in high-school but tbh not all players that were good in hs transition to good players in college. Physicality sets the tone for alot of hs players but there's alot more to playing in college and some guys aren't coachable. I think we are fine moving forward and the only losses that bothered me was LJD and Mike Jones. If LJD and Spiller got along he would be our starting RB so thats unfortunate. GO TIGERS!!!

I don’t know, Dabo just recently said Pennington would have started if he had been healthy, so Tchio might have been sitting behind 2 freshmen. It’s crazy to me that our supposedly stellar OL recruiting class in 2020 is not showing up at all. Really hope Mitchell Mayes can come on strong.

[4]
Nov 9, 2021, 1:11 PM

This isn't sustainable. It's killing our depth. Dabo needs to change with the times.

By way of comparison, Tennessee was projected to be a 4-8 dumpster fire. Coach Heupel hit the portal hard, and even though undermanned, Tennessee is now 5-4 with a good shot at 7-5. That includes close losses to Pitt and Ole Miss, and hanging with Bama for 3 quarters. Their offense looks like ours used to under Morris.

I understand Dabo valuing loyalty, but he needs to value performance over loyalty.

Just goes to show that Rivals HS ratings are far from a sure-thing.

D.Bowman - - - all world HS RB star; all world College RB dud.

P.Tchio - - - 4* HS O-Lineman; but even after 2 years in college, could not sniff the field after a few early season minutes.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

On the other hand, J.McFadden - - - 3* HS O-lineman; best O-Lineman (by far) on 2021 Tigers, and a very likely NFL O-Lineman (as a guard) in 2 years.

Going back ... T.Shatley - - - 3* HS D-lineman; became college stud O-Lineman, and has been playing in the NFL since immediately after his senior season at Clemson in 2013.

Nov 9, 2021, 1:44 PM

^^^ This.

Look at the best players from Clemson's 2016 recruiting class, now in NFL.

Isaiah Simmons: 3* - 451st ranked player.
Tremayne Anchrum: 3* - 486th ranked player.
K'Von Wallace: 3* - 1,054th ranked player.

Clemson has to keep hitting on these guys. You see it with the NFL Draft EVERY single year. Guys dont live up to expectations. Guys like Josh Allen, a 2* QB is not one of the best young QB's in NFL. Tom Brady the 199th pick wins 6 Superbowl. Hunter Renfrow had no *'s and no national rank.

Stop falling in love with the star rantings, tigers fam. The only criticism you can level at Dabo is not keeping these guys on the roster as depth. That does need to change. They can leave at end of the season, but not middle of season.

Hardest, by far, to evaluate. In the Old days when Nebraska was on top and blowing everyone off the ball, the O-linemen didn't sniff the field until they were juniors (and had usually been redshirted)..... three years in the program. Yo might also remember when Clemson went through a litany of quarterbacks who played for one year (maybe two) and were excellent because they had been in the program three years learning from others and developing. This was in the 80's .... Billy Lott, Mark Fellers, Mike O'Cain, to name a few. That just doesn't seem to work now with the highly rated high school athletes.

Why is Wake so good this year ....... 15 seniors or super seniors who have been in the progrand five or six years!

Offering kids early is not going to help, that increases the bust rate significantly and is the reason why the SEC oversigns and processes kids out at an alarming rate treating them like assets instead of student athletes. If that’s the program you want to pull for, there are plenty in the SEC.

flag link

Re: ROSTER MANAGEMENT.....

Nov 9, 2021, 2:55 PM

At this point, they are assets. That's how it works now. I'm not so sure there was ever a thing called a student-athlete. I was in class with Clemson with a number of football players and wouldn't say 90% of them were students in anything but name. But now, with NIL and the transfer portal, it's a marriage of convenience. Players pick a college without any loyalty and will drop them like a bad habit if they're inconvenienced in any way. As you said, pretty much all the top programs treat them the same way. College football isn't what it was, it's now just a semi-pro team with ties to the University in name and uniform only. And if you continue to treat it like its not, it will leave you behind.

Yeah, sure ... Clemson doesn't develop O-Line talent that makes it to the NFL.

Introducing you to:

Tremayne Anchrum: 3* HS O-Lineman. Played RT on Clemson O-Line (starter of both 2016 & 2018 Nattys), is now a NFL guard.

Tyler Shatley: 3* HS D-Lineman. Played Guard on Clemson O-Line (graduated after 2013 season); been an NFL guard ever since.

Oh yeah, Clemson also develops higher rated HS O-Linemen:

John Simpson: 4* HS O-Lineman. Played guard on Clemson O-Line (starter on 2018 Natty team), now in the NFL.

Jackson Carman: 5* HS O-Lineman. Played LT on Clemson O-Line (backup in 2018, starter 2019 and 2020). Now a guard in the NFL.

Consider getting an education before posting on TNet ... maybe another 11 years before your next post will give you enough time to learn something.

Have you seen our OL play this season?

Have you noticed that he has been worse than the starters when he enters the game?

And now you think he is going to head to a powerhouse program and take playing time from their OLs?

I do wish him luck, but he better head to a worse team if he wants more playing time and not a title contender.

Look, I’m no coach but I am an All American Armchair QB. U guys watch…has #74 blown you away? The only time his name is called is for all the wrong reasons. The times that I saw Tchio play, I noticed a little bit of grit that is sorely lacking with that unit. Time will tell, but I’m gonna venture to say this situation is a colossal F up!

You hate to see a highly ranked recruit hit the portal but this is going to continue for all programs. In another year or so Tchio may have been that player that you looked at thinking he was overrated by the services. Kids that are 4-5 star expect to start in year 2 and many will leave if they don’t. We need to end the days of 18-20 per recruiting class. 25 should be a minimum as long as the portal exists. Sure, we can pick up kids from other schools but there is always a reason why they left. Typically they got beat out or had issues we don’t want to deal with at Clemson. There might be a few good options but we need to start bringing in more HS talent and then develop. The best will stay and that is the positive. Dabo needs to make this work in our favor.

that Dabo’s statement showed me he was surprised a bit and maybe a bit pisssed too. Saying, I’m thinking it was a quick decision by this player or something was said between player & coaches recently and bam, he’s gone.

As one poster said, why leave now with year not over and he could possibly have played some meaningful downs and then hit the road.

Now, he’s either a student “non-athlete” or worse headed home to Mama.

Re: I think..

They should have asked if he was prepared for this type of transfer. Not being surprised just means everything is on the table these days.

I would say we have not prepared for the impact of the portal. That needs to get fixed ASAP. Picking up a bunch of left overs won’t help. Bama and others will fund the lower level teams moving forward. It will make things much more competitive but we need to keep the cream of the crop right here.

Did the impact of the portal surprise Dabo? It would be hard for him to say no to that imo.

Re: TNET: Clemson OL enters transfer portal

Nov 9, 2021, 1:48 PM

Look the portal is here though this is first time it has really cut into us - compare that to Bamma who has lost about 4 times the number of players we have. Patience and perseverance is down to a minimum and everyone wants their way NOW not later. The good new is now we can expand numbers to compensate for the losses with the new scholarship rules. As for picking people up off of it - I expect we will sooner or later but as of now we ARE NOT TN so there is no comparison on what would improve our roster vs what they needed to improve. I'm not worried at this point about not yet using it. Is Dabo loyal, sometimes to a fault? Absolutely and we can all fill in a list of players and coaches who got the benefit of the doubt from this but there are far worse sins than being loyal to your players and coaches. Look we could EASILY be 3-6 or worse now so you have to give Dabo and the entire staff and players a ton of credit for avoiding a total finger-pointing meltdown like we have seen happen to many other teams who have adversity. In fact, IF we can manage to scrape a 10-win season and a bowl victory it might be Dabo's best coaching job ever. Considering the departures and injuries this team would be taken to the woodshed by about 6 of the 7 last years teams so 9 or 10 wins might be huge accomplishment - and set the stage to return to where we want to be next year.

My opinion - with no inside info

[2]
Nov 9, 2021, 2:08 PM

The past few years - we have not had a lot of transfers - everybody has some - but not many.
Ok - so why?

Playing time and development.

Well, the past few years - Clemson has dominated on the scoreboard and Dabo made a point of playing virtually every player that dressed out. Everybody had fun - starters got us a nice lead - backups would come in and play lots of snaps - then the third teamers+ would come in and infuriate the style point fans by allowing the other team to score.

This year, with every game a struggle - backups and third teamers are getting fewer reps and probably feeling left behind compared to prior years.
Now, our turnover is similar to other teams - where before, it was less.

JMO anyway.

well, AND start using the transfer portal then we aren't going to be a consistent playoffs contender again. It wasn't long ago that I heard the statement "we have 10, maybe 11, functional guys on OL." What a laugher that was. It seems that we are feeling the pain on the OL b/c of low signing numbers and a high number of misevaluations from 2019 and 2018. 2019 - Boateng (gone), Rayburn, Putnam and Trotter(not ranked). Not exactly a stellar class there. 2018 - Carmen and McFadden (only 2 OL signed! but hit on both).

Re: TNET: Clemson OL enters transfer portal

O-line and deteriorating roster numbers are a problem. Can’t keep signing 15 or 18 players in a season in which your losing seniors and 7 or 8 to the portal. You can’t sustain that because injuries happen to everyone. We’ve just been fortunate to play teams in which our starters only have to play 1/2 a game to secure a win.

Anyone who is saying otherwise is either a 1st rate grade A #### kisser just looking for someone to give them a meaningless thumbs up or to pat them on the head and say “good boy”. And those who are guilty of it are ferocious in maintaining that 100%

All the kids that used the portal sucked. Ask any TNetter Sunshine Pumper.
