It seems to me everyone going to Clemson would benefit from seeing the 60 Minutes story on him and what he went through. I learned his full story many years after I graduated. I wish I had known it as a student

I’m glad I was among the last group of Clemson men who got to see the General in his last days. Truly amazing man. He gave toughness a new meaning. There will not be another like him but it gives us all something to strive for. Go Tigers. Be tough!

Rest in Peace sir. A true American Hero, A true Clemson Hero and a life well lived. I thought I saw him at the game Saturday on the field when they announced his honorary award? He was part of the greatest generation of Americans who were selfless for our country and their families.

I got to hear him tell his story in person when he spoke at my son's ring ceremony in about 2009.Cemented my love for Clemson when the entire group gave him a standing ovation. Hope his family knows and appreciates what he did for lots of us.

Even though I never met Col. Skardon, I did know his family in Walterboro. A sad loss yet he leaves such a legacy. May God bless his family.

Colonel Ben Skardon was a great Army ROTC instructor and mentor. He influenced me to get a commission in the Army. I did, and served for 30 years. During times in the classroom and drill field, I never heard him mention his ordeal in Japanese captivity. He was a real “man’s man.”

was a picture in the Clemson World magazine of about 15 of us holding out our hands showing our Clemson rings. I had Professor Skardon for a vocabulary class in the fall of 1976. He won the inaugural Master Teacher of the Year award that year. I can without a doubt, say that he was the best professor I ever had.
After the March in 2018, Ben invited me to his house in Clemson for "cocktails." I drove down one day during the week and arrived after dinner. Former Clemson professor and Ben's personal caretaker, Joel Brawley, was also there. Cocktails turned out to be straight shots of Jack Daniels! Don't get me wrong, I like JD but after two shots, he then offered me a third. I told Ben that I had to drive back to Asheville and had to pass. He then poured himself a third shot. Needless to say, I was impressed with how well he held his liquor. We all told a lot of stories that night and it reminded me of the class I had with him 42 years earlier.
May you rest in peace old soldier. All of Clemson graduates and fans will miss and we all certainly appreciate what you, as a member of the "Last Great Generation", did to help maintain freedom in this country.
