"The latch string will be on the outside . . . Come see us

Apr 19, 2019, 4:29 PM

anytime you can!"

My great grandmother, Lena, died at home in her bed when I was but a little boy child. She lived with my dad's parents @ 14 Bennett St behind the Old Museum in downtown Charleston, SC.

Lena would always tell us children, "Come see me whenever you can . . . I'll be sure to leave the latch string on the outside." I had to ask Grandpa Fred and Honey (his wife) what she meant.

Fred proceeded to take me to his small workshop out back. His parent across the sea, had been cabinet makers. There he showed me the door he had made for its entrance. There was a string hanging through a hole. When you pulled the string, it lifted the end of a 2x4 on the other side of the door, which kept the door closed. If you were inside the shop and didn't want to be disturbed, you pulled the latch string inside and manually replaced the 2x4 in its locking groove.

It was simply Lena's way of telling us, the door will never be locked, come anytime, you are always welcome here.

So . . . Kelvin . . . You come see us anytime you can . . . the latch string will be on the outside!!! Come join the family when you get that offer!!!
