Not a big deal. If there's anything we've learned in the past few years it's that interior offensive line play is not critical to an offense's success--which is why the coaching staff has decided to mostly ignore recruiting and developing high-level C/G talent.

Feb 18, 2022, 8:35 AM

Nah, we ok. We have like 50 tackles on schollys. We can just take a few of them and cross train like we did all off season last year.

Bama got them one from vandy. Can you imagine, why would Bama want any player from vandy. If they're transferring from vandy, they can't be any good. And napier at Fla has no clue what he's doing, he's added two OL losers from the portal already.

I know he is only a true freshman, but why not fast forward 5 star Tristan Leigh at a spot on our OL. We need to get that type of talent playing on our OL soon as possible, I would think with our RB talent, and with our QB talent!!!

It's a Clemson thing. Brad was averse to centers and guards too.

Whoever gave me the TD, I apologize. I just giggled. Like when someone farts in church.

Doesn't mean I do or do not endorse farting in church.

Wow. The skepticism runs deep this morning.

Re: TNET: The loss of Hunter Rayburn adds urgency to Tigers' search for a center

Feb 18, 2022, 8:57 AM

Honestly, how are you not a skeptic?

Do you really think you can look at the offensive line the last couple of years and think “wow, that was a good offensive line. No need to change anything”.

Re: TNET: The loss of Hunter Rayburn adds urgency to Tigers' search for a center

Feb 18, 2022, 9:02 AM

I didn’t say that. But I’m not going to ridicule the coaching staff over it either.

It’s easy to not be a skeptic when you look at and for the good things that have and are happening at Clemson. I don’t choose to dwell on negatives.

We've declined for three years in a row...

What has to happen before you become critical?

Re: TNET: The loss of Hunter Rayburn adds urgency to Tigers' search for a center

My job as a fan is to support the team and enjoy the product. It’s someone else’s job to be critical of the coaches and players. I had my career of being the guy in charge that had to conduct performance appraisals and decide what raises to give each year, hire and fire and discipline people, etc. etc. Someone else can carry that stress for Clemson football. I am just going to sit back and enjoy. And before you ask, yes, I can enjoy it at a level less than perfection.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I’m not that concerned unless Trotter is not playing.

Feb 18, 2022, 10:48 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: The loss of Hunter Rayburn adds urgency to Tigers' search for a center ]

Trotter was clearly the better center IMO and his PFF grades reflected that. We had a number of injuries last year where the guys will be back. Several guys would have started over Rayburn at guard had they not been out for the season. Rayburn was a help at guard down the stretch in the running game but he was going to been a rotational depth guy this year. It would be good to add a guy from the portal if Howard nor Lithicum have taken that next step this spring. Lithicum obviously was highly rated but he was a TR FR last year and had not played the previous year in HS due to Covid so it was clear that he wasn’t ready last year. Hopefully he’s back in playing mode and has been doing well in the weight room. Still - most OL aren’t really ready til there 3rd year so we’ll see. Howard is a huge unknown/wildcard

No, but the talent level of big ugly's is rising for it to be a really good OL!!! I think that we have the highest level of OL talent right now, as we've ever had for a Clemson OL at one time!!!!

From what I've heard about Trotter, I'd be surprised if he ever wears a Clemson uniform again.

I'm dying to know !! I thought Trotter played well down the stretch; granted it was against teams with weak run defenses

Re: TNET: The loss of Hunter Rayburn adds urgency to Tigers' search for a center

Feb 18, 2022, 9:09 AM

Gosh, three of the TNetters who posted responses between 8 AM and 9 AM are either struggling to be funny with parody posts, or simply crabby because of the dreary weather.

Clemson has 2 Centers after losing 2 centers. So we had FOUR centers on the roster, two of which had been improving while playing in 2021 season to the point of at least holding their own, and now there is rotten luck and one for sure is gone (and who knows about the other one who's in Dabo's doghouse).

So our recruiting and development of players for the Center position is considered terrible.

OK, got it.

Oh yeah, and Dabo has ignored the portal. Sure, he and the staff were just kidding by going after that UVA stud (who we didn't get). Sure, all of the crabby TNetters below know for sure that Clemson hasn't pursued other Portal centers, such is their profound ability to spy on the inner workings of the coaching staff.

Or maybe these posters simply haven't had their coffee yet this morning.

The article says that Linthicum has plated just 7 snaps over the last 2 years. Wasn't this past season his first? I thought he has only been around a year.

He was supposedly the top center the year he left HS. The lack of meaningful pt so far is disappoining. Hopefully he is ready

Top center by 1 source and only source and squeezing into the top 100 players overall. That other source had him in the top 300 players and the 8th best center. I am not sure he was really expected to come in and dominate ride off the rip.

Lack of development by Caldwell??

Can’t be that difficult to find a back up on Portal

Remember the Portal doesn't giveth to Clemson, it only taketh away.

Sad news for Rayburn--- Ryan can do it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: The loss of Hunter Rayburn adds urgency to Tigers' search for a center

Feb 18, 2022, 10:35 AM

No doubt at some point Ryan can. He should be ready and fortunately have a few games up front to get reps. Problem, no viable backup and depth. No doubt we can have 5 ready... But we haven't gone through spring, summer or fall camp. We looked ok going into last spring too. Most injury proned position group. And I don't have to tell you that.

As the article states, we're thin. Trotter is speculative at best. Even with a dedicated trotter, we need 3 deep (excluding scout and walk on) at every OL position. Long season. As for my tic tackle post early, we do seem to be able to recruit top rated tackles...

I have 2 nephews that played ol in college. It takes a special talent to swap positions AND do it consistently good.

Hoping Linthicum will be ready to play this year. He was a highly regarded center in HS, just doesn't have experience at this level.

Re: TNET: The loss of Hunter Rayburn adds urgency to Tigers' search for a center

Feb 18, 2022, 5:51 PM

He has more experience than Mitch Hyatt had, and as a true freshman, he held up the hardest position on the OL, Left Guard!!!

Anyone who thinks this year will be much better than last year had better be praying that our O Line does not have more injuries. We proved last fall that is hard to win without a good line.
