Thanks for this one! As an "old-timer" I remember that game and that play in particular very well! Some may also remember George Welsh's quote about us (I believe the same year) - "when you have Chester McGlockton at third string, that is all I need to know how good they are" (or something similar....). Tough to compare defenses over the years since so many things change but those guys were fun to watch and GOOD!
I was actually at that game. Clemson had some absolute studs on the D-line and at LB. My dad was watching the game at home and told me the analyst said “the good news for WV is there are only 3 or 4 guys on the field who are faster than Major Harris. The bad news is they’re all Clemson linebackers.” I will say this, with Ford at the helm, we were only a big time QB away from being a dynasty.
I still can hear the chant “MAJOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL “ by our Clemson fans in our section. The WV fan’s we’re not happy with us?? in our section ??. They thought they were going to easily beat us from what I remember. Great trip. Clemson owned Florida in those days.
We were at that Gator Bowl and Major Harris was the hottie tottie in the country. Our defense figured WV out and they had no chance when we started the sack parade. All you have to do is look up the future NFL players that played for Danny and you will understand why we were so good. Hopefully we have some future NFL guys on this year's team.
I was at that game and Chester really showed out, as did Wayne Simmons! A funny story about it, we were staying in a Hotel with many West Virginia fans and we had listened over and over about Major this and Major that and for us to plan on coming to their VICTORY party. So we go have a banner made, "Just in Case" and when the game was over, we hurried back to the hotel and hung it in the atrium, the banner simply said, "West Virginia, a MAJOR disappointment!" Needless to say, they didn't show for OUR party....
