I hope Dabo has a SERIOUS meeting with his coordinators

with Tim Bourret. He sounded uncomfortable, like he really didn't want to have to say what he knew he had to say (I take responsibility, I didn't get them ready to play, Notre Dame is a great team, yada yada yawna yawna). I expected him to sound a little more tilt than that.

I really didn't think I'd ever say this about Dabo, but I'm beginning to wonder if the fire is gone for him. Somehow maybe he thinks he has the street cred to just bide his time until Saban retires, then he can go home. A few weeks ago, a lady on the weekly call-in show asked him if he would be interested in coaching anywhere else - without hesitating a half-second he said "Alabama".

His latest staff hires have all been friends and family looking to get a start in coaching, or a leg up in the game. I hope Dabo has considered that he couldn't do that at Bama. He'd be out if he took this shyt show we have right now down to Tuscaloosa.

I think he better start winning these games here if Alabama is where he wants to end up. Alabama doesn’t want this clown show coming there and he may have already sealed that tonight. Alabama would want him to Saban those coordinators and get new ones the day after our bowl. If he doesn’t do that I don’t see him coaching anywhere relevant

Alabama does not want Dabo. They would not accept his recruiting practices by only offering certain recruits and his no transfer portal policy. Dabo either needs to get with the times of College Football or we will be left behind. Alabama, GA, OSU, etc offer every 5 and 4 star, Dabo likes to pick and choose who he offers. Plus, he does not take any transfer portal kids and Alabama is littered with transfers.

Re: He didn't sound very upset in the post-game locker room...

Nov 6, 2022, 10:35 AM

Yeah, Alabama would never hire him. This isn't 2018. Our picking and choosing recruits worked when money was not ubiquitous and we could land all of our targets. The past 2-3 years, we're having to do fall-backs because all of our targets go elsewhere. We have landed 1 of our top 3-4 wide receiver picks the last 3 years, who's been hurt the time he's been here (Stellato).

I appreciate him owning this, but this began with not interviewing real coordinators for the openings at DC/OC. And if he couldn't see this coming (my wife did) then he needs to open his eyes.

Re: TNET: Swinney doesn't hold back: 'This was an ass-kicking. Period.'

Nov 6, 2022, 6:15 AM

He recognizes talent and knows experience will come. It did for Dabo. It did for Billy Napier; but, not in time to save him at Clemson.

They earned a pile of experience tonight. The question is what they do with it.

Venables defenses got mauled a few times...by the option, the shovel pass and the slant, notably. They got better.

This was a beating from start to finish. There were signs of hope, though. A punt six, the early false starts and two interceptions are all correctable and can go either way. The offense started moving in garbage time.

I don't know what we need to do to make their running game like ours and ours like theirs but I'm sure they're working on it.

Three more games. All the goals are still on the table. A one loss ACC champ has gotten in before. How do we respond?

Nov 6, 2022, 1:48 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Swinney doesn't hold back: 'This was an ass-kicking. Period.' ]

Well I be d a m n e d, somebody besides me has the courage to call it exactly what it is, it's a total failure of Dabo not doing his due diligence of interviewing and hiring these young men real D-1 power5 college level coordinators instead of placing his projects in the most important positions of a FB team.

I don't care how good of a HC a FB team has, without good experienced coordinators, your HC is going to look just as bad as your teams less adequate coordinator on what ever side of the ball they're on, and that is just what Dabo and the team looked tonight playing against a team with equal talent as Dabo has on his team, but they had far superior coordinators than we have, and man it really showed tonight. Superior talent will only allow you to defeat teams with less superior talent that probably has just a little bit better coordinators than we have, and that fact has been shown to us all season, and more so with a couple of teams that had a lot less talent than we have, but they had a lot better coordinators than we have, and bc of the better coordinator talent, they took us to the brink of losing with a lot less talent than we have.

Coordinator experience is the main roots to winning and losing. NC State coordinators, Wake coordinators, Syracuse coordinators, and probably Louisiana Tech coordinators would have soundly kicked our butt the way that ND did without the game ever getting close to over time only if they had the talent that we have on our roster!!!

HC's are paid the money they make for having the ability to first recognize, and hire the best the best coordinators they can recruit to come to their FB programs, and if they can do that, they will also find, and recruit the best players, and try to bring them to their FB program, and that is exactly what has made Dabo one of the best HC's in the country, but Dabo made a serious mistake by thinking he could make the coordinator hires easier by growing his own at Clemson without them ever having the necessary experience they must have go along with a person smart enough to become a great coordinator. And by Dabo overlooking that main ingredient called experience, he is learning that the most intelligent FB minds can not coach what they know about the X's and O's of FB without the experience of actually coaching the X's and O's on the field, and in the game of FB... The scary part is, he may never recover from his mistake!!!

Why are so many ready to trash Dabo ? We lost a GREAT DC in Brent Venables and when Jeff Scott left and then Tony it showed up in our offense. Has everybody forgotten we WON 2 CFP NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS ? I came on to say last night we found out our defense can't always protect us anymore from a stagnant offense but now I see everybody trashing Dabo and saying he is going to leave , which I don't think he will. We wore our defense out at ND because we can't move the ball consistently . That is obvious but the sky is not falling.

Dabo has been paid for those national championships quite well. What’s he done since then. I’m still I’ll be got a pay raise and contract extension at the beginning of this season. For what? A 10-3 year that was completely his fault?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

When Venables left, what did Dabo do?

Nov 6, 2022, 1:52 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Swinney doesn't hold back: 'This was an ass-kicking. Period.' ]

He promoted two unqualified coaches on the staff to be co-DCs, neither of whom had ever been a defensive coordinator.

He didn’t interview any candidates. He even admitted to not even considering anyone else.

I find this inexcusable for a coach who gave us “best is the standard” and gets paid what he does.

Again, the OC and DC are horrible and Dabo knew it. He hired them to give himself a bump in pay. He gave one 850,000 a year and the other 925,000 a year. Tony E was making 2 million a year, and BV was making 2.5 million. With the money saved Dabo got a new contract with a 1 million bump in pay. I said all along before the hires, we should look at Jim Leonard and Kendall Briles or Willy Korn. Neither of those were looked at.

Dabo went from a position coach and recruiting coordinator to Head Coach, 7 conference titles, 6 of 8 CFPs, 10 straight 10 win seasons, and 2 National Championships because someone (Terry Don Phillips) gave him a chance as a position coach. He was selling real estate a few years earlier.

He's going to give people opportunities because he was given opportunities. After the 70 to 33 loss to West Virginia he brought in Vebables. I trust him to be loyal, and make the right decisions with coaches.

All the goals for the year are still there to achieve.

Defense is semi-justifiable cause they were doing good under BV. On offense, promoting from within in a department that’s woefully underperforming makes zero sense. The stubbornness with that and DJ doomed the season before it started.

Gahhhhh, much right, but much wrong.

Nov 6, 2022, 12:33 AM

First was the now-Dabo-standard mention of past success, as if it has anything whatsoever to do with the lousy team he put on the field tonight. He said, “ And again, in 14 years that hasn't happened a lot but it's happened a few times along the way. And we've handed out a bunch of them, too”. No Dabo, that’s what complacent people say as an excuse to justify poor performance and your team feeds off it.

And then to really turn the screws, he goes into the patented Tommy Bowden “half of all teams lost today”. Maddening.

Dabo might not like where we are as a team right now, but based on his comments, he’s comfortable with it.

If we are being honest, we knew we had this type of game in us. Streeter has been awful all year. Was at the game and the play calling was vanilla from the start. There are so many issues with this offense I don’t know where to start. But it does begin with play calling and QB play.

Also, Simpson is out of position, but he may be the best option. The LBs and the line cannot stop the runs up the gut. LB coaching is Goodwin.

He says it starts with me. Good lord… We all know that. And unfortunately YOUR decisions are the reason we have an L tonight. So many positions on this “staff” are WAY in over their head and it showed tonight when playing a team that not only wanted it more but was similarly talented. I haven’t seen fire from this team on EITHER side of the ball in 2 years and that’s a problem Clemson nation.

But don’t worry, DJ is our guy!! And it’s all rainbows and sunshine!!

One thing... I regret him hiring all the alumni that he has. This most likely will not end well for them and I hate to see fellow alumni hurt because they were hired into positions that they were not ready for. He took a great analyst and tried to make a defensive coordinator out of him. I don't care how smart he is he is clearly not someone that motivates or inspires confidence in his players.

Really might be time to fire some coaches this offseason and look outside the program. I know you want to keep the culture and Clemson Family thing, but that doesn't win games and it doesn't keep jobs. It does build complacency and that's where the program is at right now. No reason we shouldn't be looking like Georgia did against Tennessee with the talent we have. I also don't want to hear the (Georgia almost lost to Mizzou). We have almost lost to nearly everyone on our schedule outside an abysmal BC, a Jeff Collins GT squad and a NC State team that we couldn't even close out with decent lead. Not counting LaTech/Furman games because why should I.

Nov 6, 2022, 1:31 AM

I don't expect the NFL to give DJ a 1st-day grade so I expect DJ will return. Therefore Klubnik won't be given a fair shot at unseating DJ. Streeter will run the same stale playbook. And the DL will be off to the NFL. So I expect next year to be worse.

I totally agree! Give the team the best opportunity you can to win and be competitive. The defense can’t bail the offense out every time they fall into a slump because they have done it all season . The offense has struggled all season just like last year. They have to get an elite Offensive Coordinator and recruit better at wide receiver.

The D was responsible for giving up 14 points. They’re fine. Special teams, one bad play. As so many of us have said since week 1, Streeter and DJ need to go. Plain and simple. This was always going to be the result of their stubbornness to stick with them. I know Cade had the int, but randomly throwing him in cold, down multiple scores, at his own 5 and saying ‘bail us out again’ is a ridiculous position to put him in. He needs to start. He’ll have at least DJ’s output considering they still get the growing pains/freshman mistakes from DJ in year 3.

The whole entire offensive staff needs to go except for Richardson. The only position group in that side of the ball who knows what the #### they’re doing is the TE’s. The WR’s have looked like garbage for the 3 years that Grisham has been here, and it’s just been accepted by Dabo.

It falls squarely on you Dabo. It is your fault for hiring Streeter and Goodwin in order to give yourself a bump in pay. Neither of these coaches have any idea what they are doing and it showed against ND. Goodwin maybe a defensive genius as you say, but he isnt an in-game coordinator. If you wanted to hire an ex-Clemson person as OC, you should have looked no further than Coastal Carolina and hired Willy Korn, but you didnt, so its your fault we are out of the playoffs and getting laughed at right now.

Nov 6, 2022, 8:36 AM

Allow me to retort :

Dabo gets glory when Clemson wins!! He is the best, what a coach, we are fortunate to have him, etc etc etc.

Dabo also has earned this harsh criticism based on the last 2 seasons worth of total ineptitude on offense.

You get the glory, you gotta accept the trashing.

This isn’t little league, this is big boy football and coaches are WAY overpaid including Dabo. So if you overpay you should get more than what Dabo has delivered the last 2 years. Inside promotions to guys with 0 experience as a college football elite, this is what will happen.

Dabo earned his stripes, he also has earned what he is getting from many fans who expect more….like a competitive effort and not what was witnessed last night.

How this season progresses is only a guess because I’m not sure this team has the necessary “it” factor to bounce back. I hope they do come back firing on all cylinders, but the lack of fight and energy is concerning.

Go Tigers ??

Why did we wait until mid 4th quarter to go to fast plays. We have done this in past years with more effective teams and it worked then, so shouldn't we be doing this in all quarters?

Not just go fast but throw the ball down the field instead of behind the line of scrimmage.

Win all the home games, win the State Championship, win the Division, win the Conference, win the last game of the year. Nothing's changed - all still there to be achieved. The ND loss was like the CFP loss to Alabama - they shut down the run, and dared us the throw, and we couldn't get the ball downfield. Difficult loss - but all the goals are still there.

If those are our only goals then we are overpaying at $10 million a year

for our head coach.

Dabo is paid to make the playoffs and compete for national championships.

If all we care about is winning the lousy ACC and beating the Coots we can find someone to do it for half of what we pay Dabo.

Goals have been public for a long time.

Most years if you accomplish those 5 goals you will be in the playoffs. Making winning the championship your stated goal is a losing proposition for about 130 teams each year.

Remember Dabo crying when they pulled KB for Trevor? What a pus

Yup. He seems pretty embarrassed about it,

and as head coach, he should. That was a stinker all around.

He's done pretty well dealing with adversity over the years so optimistic about the rest of the season ahead. We have a lot of talent on the field and in the coaches boxes, just have to dig out a way of making all that work better together from here.

Go Tigers!

Problem with coach Swinney. He has put little clemsoncow college on the map and he has done it the right way Before he came to Tiger Town most of college football knew nothing about our university and now it is talked about daily. Most all of it in a positive way. We could never replace him with anyone close to his equal.

Personally I am not a fan of his QB and I never have been. But he knows a lot more about him and the game of college football than I ever will. I think, as fans (supporters) we need to give Dabo and his staff our complete approval. We don’t have to agree with everything that he does but nothing gives any of us the right to be viciously negative about the coach or the program.

Be in the Valley Saturday when Louisville comes to town. You might even find something about Clemson that you like!

A thousand thumbs up. You said it perfectly.

We're very lucky to have had TWO generational QB's nearly back-to-back. We are spoiled and are victims of our own success. But never forget, those are real kids out there, not just pawns for your self-esteem.

Go Tigers.
