Self-prescribed roster shortage undermines Clemson

This is the new world we live in and if Clemson wants to compete on a level playing field, the staff must forecast for some attrition and account for it with larger recruiting classes or transfer additions. Full Story »

Taking the moral high ground in recruiting

[2]
Oct 25, 2021, 11:51 AM

does not make Clemson look bad to anyone who knows anything. Dabo has always done that. Dabo honoring scholarships, refusing to over sign and cut underperforming players is what caused us to fall behind SC initially in Dabo’s tenure. Dabo had a conviction to do things the right way and it paid off. He’s not going to run a cut throat business like Saban and so many others but he will need to evolve some if he wants to win at a high level again. Unfortunately the commitment he has shown to the players has not been reciprocated since the advent of the portal. Dabo will have some choices to make but those choices are not going to violate his sense of right and wrong. It will be interesting to see how he navigates everything moving forward.

Ugh this "commitment hasn't been followed by kids crap" give me a break.

Since the beginning of time, colleges have shown little to no faith or commitment to their student athletes while making billions of dollars off of them. Did Dabo try and bring a bit of respectability to the game? Absolutely but he is no martyr.

Just like you at work, if things don't work out, and that happens, you can switch jobs. Now these kids can to. This is the actual real world, free market at work. It is not destroying college football, it is evolving it.

These kids rarely have the same affinity for Clemson that all of us have. They want to go to the league. Their mommas want them to get a good education. Clemson provides both. But its business to them ... not emotion.

Dabo has been too slow to react and too willing to bet on the "Dabo Swinney/Rudy walk on myths". Yes they are great stories, but how many scholarships does Bama or OSU give to walk ons? nearly 10%? I sincerely doubt it.

This is irresponsible of Dabo and the coaching staff. He has to be smarter and let go of his ego.

Dabo did the things the right way in the environment he grew up in. Times have changed.

Do i personally like he's giving scholarships to his and Veneables kids? No i don't. I appreciate the symbol that they've worked for it, but on the flip side, that's preventing a kid Dabo could of helped raise up. Is that the message we want to send?

But in the new world, Dabo can still sell the family and Clemson culture, but he has to adapt to it. We don't have to sell out on Jucos like lots of schools. We can still get good Clemson kids, but he is going to have to realize that you can't replace 4/5 stars with walk ons and be successful at the highest level

We need to recruit larger classes. Coach Swinney doesn’t have to use the transfer portal if he doesn’t want to. (I think we should. If best is the standard then open up the competition. Let someone transfer in and if they win the spot than good for them)

But he doesn’t have to use the portal but if he chooses not to than we must recruit larger recruiting classes because attrition and injuries will happen.

That’s one reason I’m sick of the injury talk this season. Yes, we’ve have a ton of injuries and no you can’t foresee that but stop with these 16 or 18 class recruiting groups. At a minimum take 22 kids a year.

Just my 2 cents.

Re: Exactly!!!

Oct 25, 2021, 8:49 AM

Agree. Truth is, what injury/covid has cost us a W before the Pitt game? Perhaps Spector, but we could and should have taken a portal guy because we knew he was a big maybe... No, we chose to d I c k around all summer putting Ross in the slot. Square peg scenario.

Beyond that, what other injury prevented us from beating uga or NC State?

Breesee & Skalski both went out early at N.C. State…

[2]
Oct 25, 2021, 9:05 AM

Clearly our defense suffers without them. Can’t remember if Davis was out at that point.
Others missed that game as well. Shipley also left that game early…would have to go back and see who else.
My guess is that we could have found a way to get stops with our best defenders out there…and not give up 99 plays or whatever it was. Not sure the offense would have been fixed, but could have squeaked one out.
But we were healthy for UGA.
I agree with the article though…could have used a few more depth pieces this season…not sure if the portal would have gotten it done, but it is worth a shot in times of need.

I guess I don't understand why they limit their classes. I'm not worried about the class rankings but it jumps out that a bunch of the other schools rank higher simply because more recruits = more points. Clemson does a better job with average ranking, which shows the high quality of the kids they bring in.

Re: TNET: Self-prescribed roster shortage undermines Clemson

emoji_events [7]

Yes it has been self prescribed. Some would say self inflicted. Dabo has repeatedly told his staff when they're recruiting, they better be right... Well, no one is 100%. Misses happen. DJ was a can't miss, day 1 starter.

Here's the rub, this is only part of our problems. We've been on the decline since 2018. Not only is there no margin for error, we haven't properly developed some of the players we have or have had. And in a few cases, the player has actually regressed. Fact is, we've been fortunate to play a weak schedule.

Re: TNET: Self-prescribed roster shortage undermines Clemson

[2]
Oct 25, 2021, 8:45 AM

We have more than 5 players out with injury so the picture is worse than stated. I am disappointed and frustrated too but we have won 2 National Championships in the last 5 years with our coaches and their system and there is only Alabama that is in that category. Dabo is not a fortune teller and could not know that players would live up the uninformed, ridiculous recruiting hype. Dabo also could not know that key players would be injured leaving less talented having to play.

I am a true fan and trust Dabo to lead our program and if changes need to be made in recruiting he will make them but everyone must understand that it may take several years for the changes to show results. Kids want to be somewhere they can play and the Portal allows a path for that. A comparison to Pitt should have been made before the game because their roster told us all we need to know and their motivation was off the charts.

Not being willing to "over"-sign was one of Richt's eventual downfalls in Athens. His others were excessive loyalty to friends on the coaching staff even when it was clear they weren't getting it done and finally not recruiting the OL nearly as well as the skill positions on offense.

and that was prior to portal. The injuries have just highlighted the issue this year. One thing we need to remember though is we don't have the off the field issues most big time programs have. At this stage in my life, I want to win, however not at all costs. I'd rather have the quality young men Dabo brings into the program. We can still win with that mentality, because we have done so in the past. I'm not a big fan of bringing in bodies that aren't consistent with our values. Typically (not always) portal guys are not what I want in the program.

I admit I haven't looked but I doubt Saban gives out 7 of his ships to walk-ons. Plus, it's clear that players are going to hit the portal and leave every year. It's a recurring thing now in college football so plan for it.

We've just been a step behind and with the Super Seniors and ignoring the portal, this is the year it has caught up with us. If Pitt had 13 Super Seniors, it was 22 or 23 year old men against our 19 year old freshmen in some match ups.

Injuries you can’t avoid but what I take most

[3]
Oct 25, 2021, 9:07 AM

out of the article is all the guys that transferred prior to the summer workouts. Those guys could have been replaced with the portal. Would portal transfers have been at same level? Who knows, maybe?

That’s where we have to open our eyes to the portal. We have to be willing to replace depth we lose. No promises to a kid we bring in but why not recruit the portal? It just doesn’t make sense. We have replaced 4 and 5 star transfers with a bunch of walk-on’s. I get that Dabo is loyal to his guys but he could also show loyalty to his guys by bringing in talent to replace talent and not create this weird vibe of some “practice” players getting schollys because a 5Star left.

flag link

I've been saying this for weeks.....

emoji_events [6]
Oct 25, 2021, 9:21 AM

Roster Management. And it IS largely self-inflicted and has been an issue for a while...but its just now more pronounced. Until this year, we've been able to hide these shortcomings on the roster due in part to elite skill and being somewhat fortunate on the injury front. I applaud Dabo for trying to do it this way, but with the new age of portal departures, we can't afford it anymore--it leaves us too short-handed against our peers (Bama, uga, OSU, etc...). We don't "hit" on everyone...in fact, there are some classes where we whiffed on many---2019 comes to mind. Most of the below suggestions require only minor tweaking....

*IF you aren't going to use the portal at all, we need to be signing full classes EVERY year that take into account the inevitable portal departures in today's college football world. Zero reason to compete against your peers with one hand tied behind your back...

*Make the OL room larger (OL has been an issue for way too long). Look at what schools who are elite along the OL are doing (sizes of their OL Rooms). I agree with Dabo, the best teams are built from "the inside out." People are quick to blame Caldwell....but look at the restraints he has on him compared to other OL coaches at schools like Bama, uga, etc....

*Offer slightly more kids and some earlier so when we miss on a target, we aren't scrambling offering a good prospect late, missing out....and then settling on a very-low rated prospect who is a project at best. This recruiting cycle, this is going to cost us several OL/DL b/c we were too late to offer. Not to bash any kid, but there are too many walk-ons on schollys. Love a vibrant walk-on program, its great for the team...but 85 is already a low number to begin with. Some, not all, of those spots should be going to other highly recruited kids.

*As a poster already noted, do what BAMA is doing. They sign large classes and use portal very sparingly. SABAN is the GOAT b/c he isn't apprehensive about adopting to changing situations. Dabo has made tough decisions in the past and trust he will do the same here.

I don't care if Will Swinney miraculously transforms to Will Shipley overnight. The fact that anyone with the name Swinney or Venables is on scholarship at Clemson is absurd. He can give the scholarships to a walk ons for all I care, but both are being paid multi millions. They need to pay for their sons college and let someone who could use the money have the scholarship.

I get what you’re saying, but those Eagle Scouts aren’t going to deliver wins. It was fine when we were perennially 8-4 but we’ve quickly gotten used to 13-1

The staff can still sign 4-5* guys based on the Clemson culture but they have to be willing to oversign, go to the portal, and get 1-year graduates. There are quality upstanding players to be had there. Oversigning doesn’t have to be dishonest if you’re upfront with families about what their options are.

THen maybe you should start rooting for Liberty??? But before you do, think about what this "family" approach" has resulted in. You've got great kids on Defense putting their NFL dreams at even more risk of injury because our Offensive coaching staff is comprised primarily of "FOD's" and an abnormal amount of "5-Heart" walk-on receivers that contribute ZERO in actual games.

Re: TNET: Self-prescribed roster shortage undermines Clemson

I basically said the same thing after the game. Our upperclass especially on offense has a lot of these walk-on schollies. While we have talent, the offense is young where the 4-5* players are currently.

flag link

I wish people would stop with this as a talking point

Oct 25, 2021, 11:41 AM

Just because some goof on ESPN said it doesn't make it true. The fact is, you could throw as many 5 stars into this system that you want and we'd still be in the same situation. The offensive coaching staff is the problem, not the players or lack thereof.

flag link

I know HS coaches that have been saying the same thing....

[1]
Oct 25, 2021, 12:01 PM

for years. Haven't heard one ESPN guy talking about roster management.

We do lack quality, experienced depth in many areas.....OL, QB, WR, LB, CB...just to name a few. A few extra 4* OL types would come in very handy right now. How about an elite SLOT guy...not someone converted to play slot when he should be outside (Ross). Another 6-8 quality players on the squad would do wonders...particularly for those who are playing too many snaps. That's why we are having to play so many freshman. Not ideal. We should never be this low on numbers.

We do have some coaching issues, no doubt. But roster management has been poor for a while.

agency type system and discourages commitment and stick-to-itness when things don't go your way. But it's here to stay and is significantly impacting college football.

Yep, but this is reality now. Dabo can either evolve and continue make a big positive impact on college athletes and their families within the constraints of this new reality, or he can continue in his ways and watch his influence be steadily diminished. It is really that simple.

These receivers with the exception of Ngata don't fight for the ball. To me that's a character and coaching issue. If you don't fight for the ball you shouldn't be playing.

Can't believe I am having to write this!!!! What has happened to reporters at T-Net? What is this crap-ola? Did the Commies take over TigerNet? I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I am seriously worried this article might hurt Dabo's feelings. And if there is ANYTHING I know to be true, it's that 100% ALL-IN TRUE Clemson fans NEVER question Dabo or his staff. T-Net should be ashamed of themselves and start writing an apology letter right now!!!! None of you guys have ever coached in NC game, so your observations are 100% MEANINGLESS. And BACK IN 1973 THE ONLY PORTAL WAS THE PORTAL POTTY and we never used it then and if Dabo says it's not going to work now, then it is NOT going to work. Either go all-in with everything from Dabo, 100% of the time and accept our return to mediocrity or turn in your IPTAY stickers NOW!

(this is 100% sarcasm - for the unaware or willfully blind)

Agree 100% with the article and worked on something similar this weekend when it comes to looking at our roster management relative to other CFP teams and our rival.

It’s a perfect storm this year……a QB that’s not playing well, injuries and transfer portal. Still, I support Dabo’s view on scholarships. I believe we’ll be back with a vengeance next year and still come out with 7 wins and a decent bowl invitation this season.

I don't understand what fight he is trying to win. The portal and NIL are realities, just like so many things in our past which changed the way we college football is played. Would Dabo have resisted the forward pass? Platoon system? Scholarship limits? Integration?

The last thing you want is for competitor to come and poach away your players. The effort to recruit and sign these kids is back-breaking, and I understand that it sucks to have them walk away and leave you holding the bag. But you have to stop thinking that you "own" them. Open your mind to free agency. You will lose players but I'm willing to bet that there are many who will transfer in because they would love to play at Clemson
