I know why he is the starter too. The rest of the Tiger fans who actually watch what happens on the field, know it too. Go Tigers.

DJ lacks killer mentality.
DJ does not have an identity.

He is a nice kid. He is an athletic kid. He is the one you want to succeed

but he simply is not hungry enough to win championships .

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you can't say that w/o saying the same of our WRs.....

or overall offensive unit in general, sans Shipley and maybe Williams.

heck I feel our offensive mindset in general has lacked a killer mentality and that includes the staff.

OR Clemson Offensive Coordinator is the issue

something is seriously wrong with Clemsons ability to put points on the board (considering the number of 4 and 5stars starting on offense)

Let's not forget how our QB played last time we played a night football game at ND when TL was out with Covid. He passed for more yards than ANY QB in history for an opponent QB at ND.

That was his high... we have seen some of his lows and a whole lot in between.

But.... we know what he is capable of. Let's hope that with the extra week to prepare he plays like he did two years ago.

If he does not... we have a great defense and a pretty good, but young and inexperienced number two. And worst case, our number three isn't too bad either (HJ).

I think our defense is the key more than our QB. We need to stop the run and make sure their TE doesn't kill us if we sell out to stop the run. If we do that, we have three QBs on the roster that can lead us to a win.

Go Tigers !!!

I agree. This game likely will not go down to who has the best QB play.(I hope it doesn’t)

Turnovers must be avoided …. And created!

I think that's a pretty good take, Bobby. To play devil's advocate (not screaming drunken redneck fan), that ND game is why we gave DJU the benefit of the doubt all last season.

The improvement this season has been great to see, but he still doesn't show a lot beyond the physical tools. My biggest gripes (and I have a few) are that he stands in the pocket too long, he telegraphs his passes, he continues to have accuracy issues (which is part of why the receiving corp looks bad), and he has no 'touch' when he throws.

I agree that he has played better than Cade, but Cade didn't get much work early in the season. I presume the coaching staff thought DJ needed the reps against Furman and LT, but even that's troubling, when you can't get the Freshman backup more snaps in those kinds of games. OTOH, regardless of the numbers, the offense suddenly looks more energized when Cade gets back there.

I'm not saying Cade is the next TL, but TL didn't look that much better than KB when the coaching staff pulled the trigger on that move. And, at this point, I don't know if many of us think DJ is as good as KB.

I think we all probably fear the same thing, that one of these games we'll get in a hole from which we can't recover, with DJ, and be left wondering how things might have turned out had we gone a different direction earlier in the season.

In the meantime, we obviously all hope DJ looks as good as he did, the last time he played in South Bend.

I do have some OC concerns, but they aren't as strong as my QB concerns.

He gives the exact opposite of bulletin board material. I love DJs attitude. But I agree he doesnt seem hungry. Hea doing far better than last year, and so far that's been enough.

Re: Golden

Golden must be speaking more about the beat down he took while at Miami. He sees more in the Tigers offense than what we’ve actually done in the passing game this year.

Nov 4, 2022, 8:23 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Notre Dame defensive coordinator understands why DJ Uiagalelei is the starter ]

I am more inclined to say its the OC, than it is on DJ. Cade has NOT impressed me. Yes Cade is on Fire with energy, and DJ has ICE in his veins and is very poised, but that IS his identity. He is calm, collective, and poised. And maybe your right, a bunch of young adults and teenagers may feed more off of an on fire energy (like Brent Venables), but that does NOT mean that DJ is not a better QB than Cade.

Cade only threw it 6 times in the Syracuse game. 2 hit the ground; 1 should have hit the ground but Ngata made an unbelievable catch; A 1 yard Pass to Allen. A 2 pt conversion to Ngata; 2-pt conversion was intercepted. And he took a sack that was not necessary. The rest were designed runs. I am not buying that as a good resume. I am not starting this performance over DJ's.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You forgot to mention the pocket movement that extended plays,

Nov 4, 2022, 10:42 AM

…the quick decision-making, the couple of throws that DJ probably couldn’t make, the lack of an interception or fumble 6, among other things.

stars don't score points... those same 4 and 5 stars are across the line of scrimmage so its a play by play battle...

Coaches get paid and know what they are doing but reserve the right to make changes. Pretty simple because coaches know their jobs depend on winning and play the best players.

Not sure what he see’s but I don’t see him hitting receivers on time or when he is on the move. More like concrete feet.

Re: TNET: Notre Dame defensive coordinator understands why DJ Uiagalelei is the starter

Nov 4, 2022, 9:33 AM

As much of a critic, of DJ, that I’ve been. The receivers have let him down this year. He should have 10 more pass TDs, easily. The receivers have dropped a lot of easy catches. Many that would have gone for TDs or very long yardage.

We don’t have the frisbee catching dogs we have become used to having on the team.

Yeah DJ should still be the starter but I have no idea what this guy is talking about as far as the rest of the offense is concerned. There isn't anything gadgety at all about this offense. Quite the opposite actually.

Biggest question Saturday night -- Did the Syracuse meltdown destroy the positive momentum DJ has created this season?

Re: TNET: Notre Dame defensive coordinator understands why DJ Uiagalelei is the starter

Nov 4, 2022, 4:14 PM

Just an observation, the 4 series Cade played in Syracuse are the only 4 he has played with the 1st team offense, 4 drives/3 scores. As I recall DW and TL never played in mop up duty only with the starters. It would have been interesting if Cade had that same opportunity . . . I don't care who starts or finishes as long at the Tigers post the Win!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You think he has forgotten 58-0 yet?

Nov 4, 2022, 5:58 PM

Me either. He will have his charges motivated, to say the least. I look forward to the Tigers once again accepting the challenge. I certainly don't expect 58-0, but would a two touchdown win be too much to ask? My intestinal tractor don't need another Maalox game anytime soon, but seems like that's all we have this year.

Re: TNET: Notre Dame defensive coordinator understands why DJ Uiagalelei is the starter

DJ U has exceeded almost every Clemson fan's expectation to date. He has this team 8-0 and has been an exceptional leader. Yet here we are 8-0 ranked 4th in the Nation and the fans are still trying to tear apart this young man and his success. Everyone weekly making predictions of failure with no basis whatsoever since the middle of last years season. Until this team loses and proves it is because of poor QB play, then why don't the fans shut the hell up and enjoy the SUCESS! This team has extended the nations longest winning streaks at home and overall. Undefeated and the fans feel it necessary to predict failure and losses every week. This team sits right where we could have only wished it to be at the beginning of the year, yet still the fans tear apart the QB and the coaches?!?! I for one am going to kickback, relax, and savor every win! And when this season is over sit back and watch the plates of crow be served! I strongly suggest the true fans join me or you are going to be wasting a super season relishing in the failure that would never be! Go Tigers!

Re: TNET: Notre Dame defensive coordinator understands why DJ Uiagalelei is the starter

Nov 5, 2022, 8:37 AM

Hot take: Having Cade come in and succeed actually takes pressure off of DJ and this is is best game of the season, knowing the rest of the team has his back. When he’s at his worst, he looks afraid to make a mistake. Knowing the whole team has his back loosens him up.
