Blah blah blah, which conference are we joining? Who will be a part of the 8 that leave? FSU, Miami, UNC, Clemson, we are halfway there!

I wouldn’t get my hopes up. The NC schools have never supported Clemson in any way. They’d probably rather keep us prisoner - they don’t care about football anyway. Mid major conferences (which is the direction the ACC is heading) get plenty of spots in the NCAA tourney.

Yeap. The former commish for the ACC was a former UNC AD and he did the conference in with this grant of rites and not making ND join as a full member. They need to show more respect to Clemson who has given a lot of revenue to the conference in recent years. I am begging to like our AD Neff for his stance on some things.

Not getting my hopes up. Just raise ticket prices another hundred a game. That should help.

J/K of course but something has to give to keep up.

To me, this feels like a legal “check the box” move. I am anticipating Clemson and FSU suing the ACC for gross negligence.

We signed on to the GOR deal knowing the terms of the television contract that got the conference the ACCN. We were full and knowing participants and knew are long-term media revenues.

There is no "gross negligence." You are describing "buyer's remorse."

Just a quick thought. If there is ever a higher share of tv money coming to the conference I can see talking about how to share that, but why in the world would 8 schools vote to give a bigger share to schools like us and FSU who potentially play in football Playoff games? Why would schools vote to take food off their table?

I think it would have to be worded/negotiated in a way that rewarded playoff appearances, so that others schools would certainly be eligible, if they could reach it.

I chuckled that this also would also apply for NCAA Tournament money. Why would we agree to do that? lol

A couple of months ago, someone posted a great link to athletic department revenues throughout the country (it was probably just for the public schools) - I suspect it was 20-21 numbers. For all the "the sky is falling" in a lot of quarters, Texas was #1 (despite getting Big-12 money). Clemson was high up the list and television revenue was our third highest source of revenue (behind donations and ticket sales - so we are less dependent on television than other programs) and IIRC Virginia brought in more than us, presumably because of the NCAA Tournament success.

I think everyone would have expected (from all of the panic) that the top fourteen would have been the SEC schools, and the next fourteen would have been the B1G schools, followed by everyone else. And it really wasn't anything like that.

I'm not saying that we shouldn't look for ways to close the gap, but perception doesn't quite meet reality on this.

Re: TNET: Neff heads to ACC spring meetings looking for progress on revenue sharing

1

May 13, 2023, 1:47 PM

But you’re looking at the old SEC and BIG contract $. We were behind with the previous contracts, but nothing excessive. We were able to make up some of the TV $ shortfalls with other revenue streams, as you correctly mentioned.

The problem isn’t the past, it’s the future. The SEC and BIG have both signed new TV contracts that are SIGNIFICANTLY different than the ACCs. GOING FORWARD Clemson will make $30, $40, even $50 million less than teams in those other two conferences. And that’s every year. So cumulatively over the next 10 years South Carolina will make a half a billion more. Think Clemson will still be able to compete?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Neff heads to ACC spring meetings looking for progress on revenue sharing

May 13, 2023, 2:11 PM

You are absolutely correct, but I expect we will continue to be able to compete until which time the ACC can negotiate a new contract. And it isn't like we weren't already behind the SEC and B1G.

Look at all the bellss and whistles in football facilities. There is already way more money than is needed to run competitive football programs. So much of the money is wasted on non-essentials.

Setting aside my partisan side (Go Tigers!), I think the SEC is a really interesting case. And obviously the SEC will remain well ahead of us for another decade.

The SEC has yet to get more money out of ESPN for the addition of Oklahoma and Texas. I think they will get "some" more. I don't know if they will keep all of the current members whole, unless ESPN needs more inventory - and ESPN did the early extension with the Big-12 which provides them with cheaper inventory.

I think that five years from now, the whining about revenue that we are going to hear will be coming from the SEC, when they are lapped by the B1G again. While the SEC might be getting more money than us, they made the exact same mistake as us by putting all of their eggs in one basket in a long term deal with ESPN and giving them little leverage to negotiate an increase. (The 8 vs 9 game conference schedule debate is all about trying to squeeze more money out of ESPN - because that is the only leverage that they have. And I think there is a very good chance that ESPN will tell them to pound sand.)

Re: TNET: Neff heads to ACC spring meetings looking for progress on revenue sharing

May 13, 2023, 4:09 PM

I don't hope anymore, I actually pray that Clemson will get an invite to the SEC, and we do exatly what Maryland done when they left, leave and only pay the ACC no attention when they demand that Clemson pay them the $50 million for pulling out of the ACC and leaving them empty handed. Just tell them to deduct it from all the millions they handed over to the ACC school that never cared about football with the exception of collecting the money that a school like Clemson had made for playing in the playoffs and NC games!!!! Screw the ACC and their love for only Basketball!!!

Numbers don’t lie. Easy math…the SEC and BIG 10 will accelerate forward in the near future.

Neff at least doesn’t have blinders on..got to do something bc 2036 or whatever date.

Re: TNET: Neff heads to ACC spring meetings looking for progress on revenue sharing

May 13, 2023, 8:55 AM

There's no way that schools are going to vote to receive less money. They might come up with some kind of plan that allows a school to keep more of what they earn. It want do anything to close the gap between the other conferences.

The reality is the ACC has to many schools that aren't good in football and nobody watches them. No eyes on the TV means less money.

Maybe something like that happens this time.

This is simply checking a box for Clemson & F St

May 13, 2023, 10:04 AM

There’s absolutely no way the ACC can close the gap to even make it competitive.

This is for Clemson and the others to check the box to be able to say we tried “everything”.

There is no doubt that this is headed to the courts!

Check the box legal move. DRad basically said as much.

ESPN article March 2, 2023
“At the end of the day, we need to try. And if, if we can't get things done, then, at least we can look around and say, 'All right, we attempted to get something done, we weren't able to do it,'" Radakovich said. "And then, if down the road, schools do choose to leave, it should not be a surprise."

Yep. You can't squeeze blood out of a turnip. Any little bit they would gain anyway is not catching the
SEC and B1G.

Re: TNET: Neff heads to ACC spring meetings looking for progress on revenue sharing

May 13, 2023, 4:17 PM

EXACTLY, they could never come up with enough money to put Clemson or FSU to match the money that any SEC or Big school are getting from their TV deals, And John Swofford signed and SEALED the ACC out of any big money deals for FB schools in the ACC!!!!!

For the billionth time.....

1

May 13, 2023, 3:05 PM

Dabo has already said where this is going. You are right to be very suspicious when he makes proclamations about certain players (ie.: Will Taylor is going to be........). But BELIEVE him here when he talks about the future of CFB. Two...then eventually one.
Not sure how it will exactly all play out...but watch WASH & ORE here.

Anyone who thinks the revenue discrepancy isn't a HUGE deal is beyond fooling themselves. Its only going to get exponentially worse. The cumulative effect will be massive. Those wanting to stay in this dying conference that has repeatedly not looked out for our best interest...just don't like change. I get wanting to keep certain rivalries/traditional matchups...and moving to the SEC or the B1G will have its challenges....but we can't afford to sit still.

Neff knows this. We have to do this step. Unequal distribution of revenue solves nothing and creates a myriad of new problems. Neff knows this....

Anyone thinking CLEM doesn't have a way out of the GOR is also living in fantasy world. I didn't agree with signing the GOR bc of the length...but the CLEM ppl knew at that time they could get out it IF they were forced to. We are now forced to....

Neff sucks, need a new AD. He continues to let Brad skate by with horrible credentials. I know I know, it's not football, so it's not a priority to Neff. That's the problem. "The potential to be mediocre one day" is good enough for Neff in basketball.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Will we have to pay the ACC for lack of success in Bball?

May 13, 2023, 3:34 PM

If Neff had to pay for losing as #1 seed in NIT or not making postseason play, Ole Brad would have been replaced several yrs ago.

Neff needs to take a carton of cigarettes. He needs to find 7 other ADs to smoke with. After, they can emerge from the smoke-filled-room and announce an agreement to dissolve the conference.

Began in a smoke-filled-room at Sedegield Country Club in Greensboro with Coach Frank Howard, Peahead Walker, Eddie Cameron, et al. May 1953.

Ends in a smoke-filled-room at Amelia Island, Florida with Neff, DRad, et al. May 2023.

70 years. Poetry.

This will be an interesting test of the power the conference believes they have to prevent schools leaving the conference. If nothing significant is offered they know no one can get out of jail until all the time is served.
