TNET: Main scrimmage takeaways: "Nasty" defensive line, offensive line thoughts

Main scrimmage takeaways: "Nasty" defensive line, offensive line thoughts

It’s now less than three weeks until the season opener against Georgia and school starts Wednesday, which always means the end of fall camp as we know it. The Tigers scrimmaged for a few hours Saturday inside the Poe Indoor Facility and while the media isn’t allowed to watch scrimmages, there are some takeaways we can gather from those that were there. Hate to have to practice against

Aug 15, 2021, 1:09 PM

That defense every day. Our offense might not look good until we actually get in a real game.

Yes Clover I agree, but I also believe that practice should be that gameday is easiest part of their season!!!

Let's also not forget that the defense knows every line call. Also there is bound to be growing pain when there are new OL and experienced ones getting "game" reps at new positions.

our d line is great no doubt

Aug 15, 2021, 2:08 PM

but it worries me that we keep hearing that our o line struggles against them..uga isnt bringing a bunch of scrubs along the d line when they play us..our o line is going to have to preform against elite d line men in order to win a championship

No offense man but did you even read the article? He just said they are mix and matching trying to get the right fit and they aren’t calling plays to beat the defense. They are just installing and calling plays to get their offense down. They’re more watching how guys handle their assignments. No one is going to blow our DLine off the ball this year. And it’s definitely not going to happen in this type of scrimmage setting. I’ll wait to see what happens in the first few games. No going to make snap judgments from snippets about a scrimmage we didn’t see ourselves.

Dude, chill out. All he said is that he was concerned that it sounds like the offensive line is getting dominated three weeks out from UGA. Obviously there could be a lot of reasons for that, but it's not like it's not a valid concern considering how terrible they were last year and how good UGA's defensive line is.

It’s not valid because you guys didn’t comprehend the article. He doesn’t need to chill so much as someone needs to reread the articles.

Installing the offense must not have been on the priority list.

UGA's D will be on OJT, but our D already knows what's happening with their own, O Line, they see it everyday with every practice. UGA don't know what sets we're in, not unless they have a spy in our camp videoing everything that our offense is doing, but never be surprised about what money can buy. To an assistant that is the lowest on the pay scale, a few thousand extra is a lot of money, especially when they have been convinced that it's only a game compared to their own financial well being!!!

Luckily it’s still really early. We don’t have our starting

5 nailed down yet (maybe?)

Practicing against this caliber of DL will make them better. People always talk about an OL gelling. Everyone has to be on the same page mentally #1. Must know assignments checks and calls for multiple fronts. You also need impeccable timing on some of these plays.

We don’t have a veteran group that has played together a lot. We do have the most young talent we’ve had in a while on the OL. Tate learning enough to play with the 1’s is pretty huge. He’s a really natural athlete. He’s got smooth feet. He will probably make a nice RT in the future.

If the offense is not ready, we won't

Aug 15, 2021, 2:24 PM

Beat Georgia. These days, when you play elite teams, you must be able to keep up on offense. If you dont, even great defenses will give up lots if points because they will be on the field and tired. See ohio State game last year and LSU in 2019.
Our offensive line is always an issue, except for Santa Clara year.
Dont feel good about a freshman staring at OL vs Georgia, no matter how good he is.

Re: If the offense is not ready, we won't

Aug 15, 2021, 2:53 PM

Yep, if you're not scoring enough you must move the ball well enough to win the field position battle.
If this happens, at least your defense can rest and the opposition has a long field to deal with.
But in retrospect, we're so deep on defense, we should stay at least somewhat fresh under any circumstance.

We are almost three deep on the defense, not much chance of them being worn down. As far as Tate starting at LG I'm not too worried, guy is strong as heck and has McFadden and Bockhurst on each side of him. Only spot I think maybe a concern is RG, not sure how strong Putnam is and I think he might be the weak link, and he is still a good player.

We didn't have a great D either of those years, that being

I am with 81 to 85 on the last part. At no point do I think a Freshman should EVER be a starter at O line unless a lot of injuries happen. I don't care how talented they are, most major schools with dudes in year 3, 4 or even 5 are going to be WAY more exper, developed and usually stronger through multiple years of S&C. Yeah, Hyatt was pretty darn good, but I said back then, it was more of a reflection of who was in front of him than his ability. Make no mistake, Jawga is gonna have some strong, hard Pipe hitting mofos across the line. Intrust the coaches but not gonna act like that is ideal. Oh well, spot the ball. Go Tigers!

I don't disagree with your overall point, but I can't say the defense struggled against Ohio State because of our offense. The defense forced a punt on the first Ohio State series of the game, and then allowed touchdowns on 5 straight drives to end the 1st half. Hard to blame that on them being tired because of the offense.

What we're hearing is 99% coach speak, but it is also sounding like the coaches aren't wanting to see a repeat of the 2020 Sugar Bowl match up against OSU anytime soon, especially against a team that their name sounds like we will be playing against a team that smells of something from a dog pound!!!

Maybe if defense is strong we can have less blitz and have a base defense that is good for more situations. This would benefit tremendously against hurry up offenses like LSU and Ohio State used.

Full confidence in the coaches, but is it normal to still be trying to figure out an OL combination that works 3 weeks out? Not much time for them to gel.

Crazy Idea

Aug 16, 2021, 2:56 AM

Remember how we would run Christian Wilkins on offensive plays now and then? If our D line is out of this world superior, I wonder if you could have a package where you put four of them on the field for critical plays where you need a few yards? Leave the regular center in naturally. Yeah, I know it’s crazy with the different techniques with OL and DL. How about a guard and tackle on one side? Would that work?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

From what I'm reading I believe our lines

Aug 16, 2021, 10:15 AM

Offense and Defense Line I feel will be just fine its just everyone on the field at the same time being in sync with each other, if that happens more often than not we should be just fine. I expect us to win because I'm predicting us in the National Title and winning it.
