WHAT HAPPENED TO PENNINGTON ??

Jan 11, 2022, 8:58 AM

...article doesn't even mention him and Dabo said early in the season he probably would have been a freshman starter or had significant reps if he hadn't gotten injured. So why his he now not even mentioned in the mix for next season ?!?!

Pennington played multiple games this season down the stretch if I'm not mistaken

He only played in the SC State game after injury (4 snaps; torn ACL).

Possibly? I don't distinctly remember the injury from the game. Swinney announced he had torn his ACl on the following Tuesday press conference.

Yeah, understand this is an article about oline this past season but we should have much more pieces in 22 that should knock trotter out... And could have helped tremendously this year.

John Williams
Taquon Johnson
Bryn Tucker
Mayes

Along with the other newcomers mentioned. All 4 above had good star ratings out of HS. Especially Mayes and Tucker. Should be able to have 2 platoons this year.

"Inconsistent"? I mean, I guess....they pretty much waffled between average and bad all season.

Also, can someone provide some clarity on what exactly made Bockhorst a "great leader" other than him getting all pissy during a few calls with the media? I'm not sure a guy who was like 23, and the worst OL on the entire team, is someone I would be following into battle but I'm willing to change my mind if someone else has examples of his great leadership.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The main inconsistency was the fact that ...

Jan 11, 2022, 9:44 AM

... the same five OL could not seem to stay on the field more than two consecutive games.

Injuries and Covid protocols killed any consistency our OL might have achieved.

Bockhorst was not a great center, but was pressed into service out of necessity when he was much more effective at guard.

I thought he represented Clemson well. He probably got frustrated with chirpy fans and media refusing to see the entire picture when they incessantly criticized the OL.

On a recent Gramlich & Mac Lain podcast, they had Darien Rencher on and he talked about Bock's leadership. He struggled on the field, the PFF data bears that out, but I give him credit for leadership.

Great leader and great player don't always align. Rencher was one of the biggest leaders the last few years, but was a walk on the never saw the field in major situations.

The fact that he was willing to play out of his natural position for his last year probably served well for his role as a leader. A lot of guys would not want to change positions for what was thought to be for the good of the team.

Oline got better when Brockhurst was out

Jan 11, 2022, 10:10 AM

How could our coaches not see that at practice or on film?! Did he play simply bc he was a Sr?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Oline got better when Brockhurst was out

Jan 11, 2022, 1:23 PM

The line got better when we moved him from center. Not saying the coaching staff shouldn't have picked up on that but it wasn't on Bockhorst. A lot of it might have been Tate playing more situationally. Tate was playing while still learning the playbook.

all offensive linemen plus the Tight ends need to take dance lessons in the off season. The footwork improvement from this to be graded and carryover when practice starts again.

I get the issues and the hope for next year because for at least the 3 games, we kicked butt and took names. The big question is, were the problems because of inexperience, were they because of injuries, or were they caused because the talent level may not be what we hoped it would be?

Wake Forest- 100th in rush defense (Clemson had 333 yards)
South Carolina- 98th in rush defense (Clemson had 265 yards)
Iowa State- 25th in rush defense (Clemson had 128 yards)

Don't overthink it. Our team ran well against horrible rush defenses and struggled against anyone in the top half of the nation

The OL and their response to Coach Austin is probably the biggest question for 2022. Coach Goodwin has shown that he will be an excellent DC. Coach Eason will probably be as good as Coach Bates. Coach Streeter has demonstrated that is he a good QB coach and will probably ignite the offense this year if the foundation is there. I think we have excellent young men in the OL. If Coach Austin can bring them together and make them work as a unit, our offense should return to being elite, but if our OL is average, there is little reason to think we can be an elite team.

Anything above D is a gift.

Jan 12, 2022, 5:28 AM

The OL under Dabo has been the biggest weakness by far and has held us back. This year the OL was especially bad. It is unacceptable that a program this good be so consistently bad at the single most important position in football! There are consistently bad ACC teams that routinely have better line play than we do. How is that possible much less acceptable?!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Informative article, Ryan. Helpful to see the PFF grades.***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wait till next year. We should have a good OL

Jan 13, 2022, 2:07 PM

Time for Thomas Austin to show us what he’s got

I think he will jump in with a lot of enthusiasm. He was a pretty good student. Hopefully a good teacher too
