I think all of Tony Elliot's playbook is out!

He needs to add a couple chapters back in. Like the chapter for using Tight ends. DW4 to Jordon Leggett used to be fairly common. The chapter pre-snap motion might help confuse the Def so they can't tee-off as easily. Oh and the chapter about scoring must be missing this year?

I'll bet ya money he is gone at the end of the season if things aren't fixed. But, it's a lot more than just play calling. It's execution. I got downvoting for saying that on another crying thread, but it's the truth. I came from football excellence and the play didn't matter if you execute your assignments. If you are dominating, the play call really doesn't matter all that much.
Dabo got rid of Steele who was a lousy DC and if TE doesn't get it together, Dabo will get rid of him. I don't know why after 2 national titles that Dabo isn't given a little bit more credit than he is around here. He's one of the top 2 coaches in the nation.

Dabo has loyalty and I'm sure wants to give him a chance to learn, but this is Clemson. He is being paid and treated like an elite OC and he is clearly not. Similar to Venables, they should be finding an elite offensive mind like Jeff Lebby to run the offense

DJ does not make decisions fast enough, he will get better.

He must either change his receiver targets, tuck the ball and run, or change plays at the line of scrimmage quicker? He seems to be a sitting duck, just has to be decisive and react quickly.
He sticks with the called play too long if it is not there. Numerous times in the GA and GA Tech games he should have just taken off running on a pass play. He locks into a primary receiver too long, and got sacked against GA looking for the next man, when it was too late. He just has to react quicker.
Just get the Wins and the offense will continue to improve....

I don't think he is checking out of plays or changing plays at this point? I could be wrong, he surely has played RPO but that wasn't working but I don't think the staff has given him check plays yet? There is almost zero adjustment on the field except pointing at defensive players, but zero player change unless they realize they are lined up wrong and Ross is pointing at them. So RPO was horrible and it was easy to see the players had just pure run plays later in game but they were so obvious that defense just sat waiting for the lane. The def wasn't caught off guard because our plays are very slow to develop, almost zero tempo, no quick slants or quick hitches. There is zero speed in the play development, the screens are slow, as a linebacker you can sit for a sec to see where DJs eyes are looking. If he looks at the field then its a pass, if he holds the ball at his chest then its a handoff, if its held on right side higher then he is running and right side low he is trying to decide to run, screen or dump, 4 looks, 4 plays.

DW4 and TLaw held the ball at different places because they were very active, and never knew if they were going to run, pass, or dump off. DJ is too immobile, so he has huge tells. We don't have a pro-passer o-line to let him sit in pocket. He is Tom Brady type and not DW4 or TLaw. If we become a pocket passer offense, he will flourish!

I agree 100%. We have promoted within but o.c is a position that evolves and the great ones have innovation in their mind and not just systematic playing based on statistical data of strength and weaknesses like Tony employs. Hes a great guy but as vanilla as they come based on creativity.

As we all, or most of us know that Tony learned to be an OC from Chad Morris working under him for two seasons. Chad Morris, and his offense has failed at SMU, at Arkansas, and at Auburn, and he has taken it back to the HS level at Allen HS in Texass where it probably belongs, at the HS level.

And being that Chad Morris is the only OC that Tony Elliott has learned from, I think that it would be fair to say that Tony needs to learn another offense, bc the one that he learned from Chad Morris doesn't work anymore at the college level!!!

Tha Chad, the offensive Genius, and his success!!!

So you're saying it took 7 years?

[1]
Sep 24, 2021, 12:01 AM

The past six seasons we finished #2, #1, #4, #1, #2, and #4 in the final rankings, and we've never finishing below #10 in total offense.

The offense hasn't changed. The guy executing it has, and the OL hasn't helped matters as of yet.

The guy executing it has shown his potential, and he also has the opponent passing record in the long history of college football.

The playcaller hasn't suddenly forgotten how to run an offense after 7 years, and other teams haven't suddenly figured it out after 7 years.

The offense will click once the guy executing it shakes loose of his mental funk.

Another key always has been having that quick and reliable receiver like Amari Rodgers or Artavis Scott who plays under the coverage. Your offense can't be about pounding the rock or hitting the deep ball home run. That's so one dimensional

Unfortunately, we do not have a tight end like that unless

one of them shows out, and I think it is more getting a new slot and put Justyn Ross back outside.
I would like to see Maverick used at slot and the freshman Stellato.

Pre snap motion isn’t really about confusing the defense as much as it’s about gaining info about the defensive coverage, whether it’s man or zone. DJ needs all the help he can get right now so I’m baffled why we don’t really use it anymore.

So it's as simple as that?

Sadly, yes unless we quit doing "what we do."

Fresh creative ideas, move Ross back outside, try Stellato and/or Maverick at Slot.

The way Herbie describes our Offense, and IMHO he has it more right than wrong, the Clemson Offense has Ferrari capability with Ross and receivers, but between the coaches, young QB and line we are only able to drive the Ferrari in 2nd gear.

I would say that DJ's inability to run even vanilla stuff well prevents TE from trying to spice it up. As DJ goes, so does the offense.

The offense has put tremendous pressure on the defense by failing to develop a consistency that mirrors the stellar performance of our defense. It's like having a car running with two flat tires. It won't work!! GO TIGERS!!

Herbie likes Clemson and he could have hit the Offense much harder and called TE out.

It's TE's job to fix this and if we have another crappy offensive performance then it's time for Dabo to think about the future of our offense.

Call out TE, Streeter and Dabo all are part of the leadership on that side of the ball. We are sputtering forward like we are driving at 5,000 RPM in 2nd gear as an offense. Shift to 3rd and push the gas until you get to 5th gear. Drive it like you stole it.

I agree 100%. When we had Watson and Lawrence, we also had backs that could take it to the house and a guy named Hunter Renfrow. Shipley may prove to be a threat but he has not shown it yet and we have got to find a slot receiver. Is Saturday the time for Will Taylor in the slot?

A TE an H back and 2 RB will take care of the 3 and 3 defense.

Our offense looks to have several limitations that need to be addressed. Offensive scheme that seems so limited and predictable due to young QB, etc is only one. They definitely need to ditch that quick pass to the flat unless they do something else with it as that play gains a yd about 1 in 50 tries. Yes, Sammy worked it against Ohio St that time but nothing, nada, zero since.

like he is identifying our OL as the biggest limitation.

Precisely - the novice fans who just holler Tony Elliott apparently don't know the OL has a position coach. Or that there is a QB coach.
If Coach Elliott is to blame for anything it is "not telling Dabo he is not getting what he needs out of the coaches in those two spots"!

He has proven he can do it. Coach Scott was the person on the sideline that use to settle down the players "on the field"! We aren't getting that now! That's not a Tony Elliott problem - but nobody calls it out!

Hoping for big jump this week - everyone should certainly be motivated and in complete focus. The one positive I saw last week was DJ looked at times like he actually meant to and wanted to run! I hope he picks up where he left off in that regard and if people dare us to run, lets do it!
