Brent Venables: Defense still has work to do after inconsistent effort

Clemson’s defense played inconsistent football and on its heels Saturday night, but still came away with enough big plays to defeat Virginia. Full Story »

You don't say? You can throw the offense in there too.

Yes, You can blame the touchdown on the offense That Virginia got right before the half . With less than 2 min to go and Virginia has no time outs , the best running back I and quarterback In the country who also is a pretty good runner , you go and call 3 straight passes all incomplete, basically giving Virginia 3 timeouts to get the ball back. Run at least twice and chew some clock with a 24-3 lead!

First, Virginia is not The Citadel and their QB is going to be a star so there is nothing wrong with a fairly stress free win. That being said, V is an amazing coach and he is exactly right, we have to get better. Maybe it was Virginia's scheme but the major difference I see is a lack of a blitz but we all have to realize there may never be another Isaiah Simmons on our D.

Got to get it together by Saturday night and punch the Canes in the gut and find out if they are a different team than they have been the past few years. V will get it done.

If we run another 3 man line we ain't punching anyone in the gut. I think Brent is the best defensive coordinator in the country, but I don't like the 3 man front regardless of who the coach is. We did n't put any pressure on their QB and apparently not doing a particularly good job in coverage. You have to do one or the other. Because of the 3 man front our edges were soft and they took advantage of it.

I agree. The 3 man front was a liability last night. We got no pressure to speak of and our Dline got whooped on most plays. How many times did we see 3 in 2 on one side and 2 on 1 on the other with the middle open for their QB to take off. At least with a 4 man front they could only double one guy and hopefully one of the tackles could shake his man to get back inside. I think this is where we really miss Tyler Davis. Had we shut down the run in the middle of the field and maybe left a LB to clean things up things would have been a little different. It wouldn't take too many of those hits on their qb like Skalski put on him early, before he would think twice about taking off with our mlb/Ilb there to lay the wood.

The great thing is we got the win and the game was never in question. The issues we saw are fixable and we know Coach V. Will get it done.
