Tillman-Old Main...

Jul 18, 2015, 8:34 AM

Rename the building immediately using both names. Then on the 100th anniversary of changing it to Tillman, what was it 1947?, drop off the Tillman and let the name revert to Old Main. The folks shouting about it now, both sides, will be a lot further along in life and may see things differently than they do now in what seems like a very divisive time. This avoids the knee jerk response to a problem, which seldom is the best solution. It's a compromise, in which neither group wins completely, nor loses everything...pride is bruised but survives. Those in charge on the day of renaming some 30 years from now may very well applaud our foresight for solving the issue with compassion for all concerned.

My fondest memories of Tillman were the concerts .

Jul 18, 2015, 9:27 AM

Frankly I never knew the "history" of the name until recently. And even now, I have little knowledge about the history behind the names on the other buildings at Clemson. Buildings are named after some old guys by old guys. Occasionally a woman's name might be thrown in for good measure.

Back to the concerts, I remember The Outlaws, Dixie Dregs, Pure Prarie League etc. Did Buffett play in Tillman? Good tmusic with good friends when I was young. I also remember the football games, the basketball games , the bars downtown and great off campus parties. And there is the occasional nightmare about - shudder- classes. And most importantly the friends I made and wife I met. When I was 18-22, I did not care about building names.

Funny but when we get together today and remenience about Clemson, no one every talks about the names on buildings. Who was the guy and what did he do? The names on the buildings had little to do with my Clemson experience.

Although I prefer things stay the same, but I lose little to nothing if a building's name changes. Even though 60 is not too far down the road, I'll leave naming buildings to the grumpy old guys. Instead I will put an old vinyl album on the turntable and have another cup of coffee - did Sea Level play in Tillman?

Yes, Jimmy Buffett played in Tillman. He was not offended.

I also saw a great many concerts in Tillman back in the day. Today's generation needs to learn the history of Tillman Hall...the man AND the building.
Many people probably do not realize that the old auditorium in Tillman Hall was actually a chapel for Clemson cadets. Yes, students praised and worshipped there both before and after the building was named for Ben Tillman.
Sad to me how today people are clamoring to change the name.

Attended all those and Sea Level also.***

freshman. It was a requirement for an English class. I look back on that as a fond memory.

I wonder if she was aware of the history of Ben Tillman.

wishful thinking, the name is going to be removed soon...

get over it. Of the two sides, one side is very small and mythologizing a man that is a current resident of he!l. So this really isn't a contentious issue, since the BOT has already announced they are fully riding Clemson of the name of Ben Tillman.

You being for the re-naming of Tillman hall is exactly why many on this hoard are against it....you are, by your distorted nature, divisive. I bet, if you would just promise to go away and re-write someone else's history most would agree to name it ### hall and move forward, quietly.

It should've never been changed from "Old Main".***
