TigerNation we are Soft...

Oct 7, 2012, 8:03 PM

I want to say this after a win. Know how a play is a snapshot. Yesterday our safety was stiff armed by the GT QB for 10 yards and he could not make the play. We are soft!!!

Yeah I am thrilled we beat GT and glad the D made some plays and yes we got some players who are tough as it gets (Dalton, Boyd, Hopkins).

But we have a culture of softness.

It starts with the HC who I support and admire but who only recently started having hard drills for the D and needs to set a tone of toughness. I don't care how many we baptize (yes I am happy for Nuke) and how many chips are placed in a bucket. There I said it. It will not matter how many 5 stars we sign if you don't man up!

Football is a brutal sport especially on D. I want a D that smacks people in the face. You know some swag, attitude and down right meanness is needed. I wouldn't mind seeing a personal foul every now and then. I want to see the other team fear our D. If it doesn't change the Coots will run us out of our own beloved Death Valley.

I will include our current students who arrive promptly midway the 1st and 3rd quarters. Granted they are down right nasty once they get there. Does a higher SAT mean you can not get there on time. We need you!

How about you Mr. IPTAY? It is time we (I include myself here as an Alum and 30 plus year Member)stopped worrying if the guy next to you has a better tailgate, get to the game for warmups and get off your butt.

No I don't want to bring back Danny, no I don't expect 80's defense the game has changed but just tackle and smack someone in the mouth.

I disagree with you 110%

i have seen a lack of condidence at times, and Dlineman taking plays off.

But I dare you to tell this Brandon Ford who has been delcleating backers all year, or Tajh boyd that puts his body at risk every time he runs the draw.

Tell this to Spencer Shuey who plays his guts out and finally got rewarded.

Tell this to Nuk Hopkins and Charone Peake that each put on 20 lbs of bulk and are tougher players.

tell the to Giff Timothy that has been playing hurt, to his face mind you.

tell this Josh Watson after he blocked that kick yesterday

Stand toe to toe with Dalton freeman and call him soft, I dare you.

the culture of softness as you call is noticeably in decline from teams in the recent past.

and who can forget Ellington, I have yet to see him lay down after hit this year, the dude has carried a huge load for us. This is not the same guy from 2 years ago. The same can be said for Hot Rod.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm glad to see Hot Rod get some playing time..

he has worked hard and always seemed to get yards in past years. Hate it when guys work hard and show promise but never get on the field enough to prove they can contribute. He's one guy who is doing just that now.

My exact thoughts ...

Oct 7, 2012, 8:27 PM [ in reply to Re: TigerNation we are Soft... ]

Most of the defensive lapses are not playing confident enough to be fast and aggressive.

Our o-line is strong.

Timothy will get the Streeter award.***

I don't think we are "soft." I think some of our players on defense are just confused about what their job is. Plain and simple. I can see how that happens against GA-Tech, they create match-up problems, but as the game wore on we got better and grew up. I will admit, sometimes that "thug-like" mentality looks pretty intimidating to the spectator, but I don't think it means crap to the players. If you're comparing our "D" to USuC's, they have recruited pretty well (on defense) for the past few years. If you watch any NFL, you hear those familiar names get called out every 10 minutes, or they were today anyway. This squad we have on D now will be hell-on-wheels in time, just wait. We'll be pissin' and moaning about the offense.

Other teams are going to use that similar scheme.

Oct 7, 2012, 8:48 PM

Misdirection and running on the edge still hurt us.

I might be wrong, but I believe this is a holdover from TB.

Oct 7, 2012, 8:41 PM

Dabo is slowly realizing it and making changes.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep. Our D is going to cost us a game.

Oct 7, 2012, 8:47 PM

At least that's what I'm afraid of

It already cost us a game. Did you see FSU?

I simply wish some clowns who post on here were
fans of the teams we have played so i could read what you write aboutHow that soft Tiger team wore them out up & down the
field. KINDLY go pull for someone big ten team. Clemson
keeps getting better and you want it all now!!! WE WILL have a great defense but then you will be whinning because we will be breaking in a new quarterback

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nooo.. you missed the point ...

Oct 7, 2012, 8:58 PM

this is not a condemnation of a player or even the defense. You have rightly mentioned many players who give blood, sweat and tears for our University.

WE are soft as a fan base! It is not the players! Wake up! You can be a great academic University AND a tough as nails football program. In football I don't aspire to be Virginia, UNC and Duke.

Are we a football school or not?

Re: Nooo.. you missed the point ...

Oct 8, 2012, 3:10 AM

we have always been a football school and I am going to say this outloud!!! at the expense of some criticism.

Tommy Bowden lifted up a bad team with a ton of talent and was fortunate to have Rich Rod pack bags for the same town.

After that, T_Bowden did Ok, and helped the program grow from the lowest pit of the post D Ford era, (Woody should be equally credited here as well)

Clemson is going to be a beast to deal with very soon IMO.

I speak from the heart and from the mind on this, having been a Clemson Football cynic for years, but the pieces are falling into places nicely. Boyd coming back next year, and all the lineman who are not yet legally old enough to consume alchohol starting on both sides? me done sees us showing a lot of promise, and with freaking 50 some freshman and sophomores on this team, and i smell a great 2013 with FSU in the valley.

Lastly, they need to sell .....................
