How long will Frank Martin survive at SCAR?

Feb 1, 2013, 4:29 PM

He's got a pretty decent track record, but seems to be full of baloney after each game. I think he gets a free pass until the middle of next season before the Coots start griping. They seem to think he's the Steve Spurrier of college basketball for some reason.

Does that mean BB is headed for probation as well?***

Spurrier was given some latitude and, as I recall...

there were plenty of folks in Cola who were ready to run him out of town after his third season. This was mostly based on his inability to beat Clemson but he also wasn't faring well in the SEC. I seriously doubt they will give Martin 7 years to right that ship. Should be fun to watch...

4 or 5 years. He might actually decide to leave sooner.

He might realize that USuC is NOT the place to build a basketball powerhouse.

Guys transferred after horn was fired. We had to stretch to get a few commits this year. He is recruiting well and our guys are already playing a better brand of ball with less talent. Give Martin 3 years and we will be competitive.

Just a powder keg waiting to go off.

Martin already has committments from 2 4* recruits (Sindarious Thornwell 2013 & Marcus Stroman 2014) and has a 4* Tyrone Johnson transferring in from Villanova. Should also get 4-5* PJ Dozier in 2015. Brownell has only brought in one 4* since he's been at Clemson.

He will need a lot of talent.

The one thing basketball has over football is you can bring in one good class and turn it around. You are looking for 2or3 good players to go with the other role players and you can win a national title. I was surprised Brownell couldn't build on what Purnell built. He will be gone before's time runs out.

Think he will leave before they fire him. The next top school that comes calling - he will be gone. Would not be surprised if he has not started putting feelers out....he looks mafia!!!

He had better win before he starts putting out feelers. His demeanor on the court is not the greatest so his baggage will slow his move unless it comes with success. That is the only reason SoCar hired him in the first place. If he loses and acts that way....he will not go anywhere but out.

Martin has already won more games this year than Horn did last year. All the Gamecock fans I know are excited about his coaching history and the national recognition he brings to our program. He's having to play with a rag tag bunch of recruits that he got at the last minute of recruiting after we had a couple of guys leave because Horn was fired. This is the new USC, we WILL be top 20 in every sport. We're already top 10 in football and baseball and top 15 in women's BB. If Martin surprises all of us Gamecock fans and fails to get our men's team there, we'll move on to the next guy. I pleased so far.

he's not Steve Spurrier, but like Spurrier he was a coach that most analysts and fans considered to be "out of our league" when we hired him. Because of that he will get a lot of leeway.

If we keep sucking for the next 2-3 years I think its more likely he leaves then we fire him.
