I have loved college football since I was a young kid

Jan 3, 2022, 7:46 PM

growing up on Lake Hartwell and going to Clemson games with my family.

But unfortunately, the NIL and transfer portal are ruining it for me now. Paid athletes going to the highest bidder is what it is becoming versus recruiting battles, etc that used to make it so fun to follow.

I know…adapt or die. But it makes it a lot less fun in my opinion. Unless the powers that be make some sweeping changes and put some limits on some things, college football will be a shell of what it used to be in five years time.

I know I’ll get called “old fashioned” by the younger group in here and that’s fine. I just liked it when a commitment actually meant something. And people chose schools because they wanted to be a part of something. Now it’s just chasing money.

What college football is going through right now is far

Jan 3, 2022, 7:50 PM

worse than when free agency hit ANY of the Pro sports. At least in Pro free agency, individuals have to sign a contract, usually multi-year, if they are a valuable commodity, to play for one team.

This NIL stuff can literally change from WEEK TO WEEK! It is truly Bonkers.

That Texas tech proposal. Coaches and AD's need to get behind it.

Your negativity says you are done with it. Good riddance.

Thing is, your perception is predicated more on projection than fact. So be it.

Wow. Solid post.

Jan 3, 2022, 7:57 PM

Why be an ### when I was simply stating my opinion on something?

And I love how you say my negativity says I’m done. You mean by not being happy with an underperforming QB all season? Because that’s about the only thing I’ve been negative about.

But God forbid anyone has discussions or gripes on a sports forum that everyone doesn’t agree with.

football into what college basketball has become. Zample:

- You know who QB's Oklahoma, GA and Bama. If you can't recall the names, you know who they are. You know who the backup QB at GA is.
- We used to know who played basketball for UNC, Duke, etc. Over coffee we talked about Jordan, Worthy, and Reddick. John Wall at UK. We hated Grayson Allen.
- Tell me who starts for UNC or UVA basketball today. You don't know, and don't care. None of us do.
- Give it 4 years, you won't know or care who QB's OU or ND. The only thing about Clemson you'll care about is W/L's: I'm not sure that's not true now.

If that is what you want for college football, if you think that is good for all but a half dozen players, fine. Your opinion. You're about to get it.

I am of the “younger generation” and I feel the same way… I say get rid of the 3 year rule and let these kids that care more about chasing the money go for it… let’s see how that works out for em . Same thing needs to happen with college basketball , let em go out of high school but if they come gotta stay 3 years

Re: I have loved college football since I was a young kid

Jan 3, 2022, 9:03 PM

Exactly. Once ratings tank and the over 35 crowds stop supporting they’ll be screwed. The younger generations can’t sit still long enough to watch a quarter much less an entire game. Social media and growing up with smart devices has killed their attention spans.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ratings tanking?

Jan 3, 2022, 11:34 PM

When will that happen? The New Era Pinstripe Bowl gets better ratings than big NBA games.

There is no end in sight, which is why OU and UT jumped to the SEC.

Getting A Degree = "chasing money"!

Jan 3, 2022, 10:35 PM

1.6% of college players will ever play a down in the NFL.

That's nothing!

The money these kids should be chasing is getting that degree from one of these fine colleges and universities.

The NIL by itself isn't bad. Because some of the stuff the NCAA use to do was crazy over-the-top witch hunts. A.J. Green selling something someone gave him for example! It's his and he could do what he wanted with it(a framed jersey).

I know that over-governing things is an issue. But in this case; college football is going to end up selling it's soul to "only the highest bidder possibly"! Some of those Big 10 schools outside of just Ohio State will suddenly be able to start getting players from the South to go up there again to play! Large Alumni schools like OSU and Michigan and Penn State can pool together and probably buy a team. Is it sustainable? Probably not just to see a championship you basically out bid an Alabama or a Georgia for!

When a smaller school like Clemson wins a championship - it restores the thought that the trophy goes to the best team: not just the best funded.

Will that be possible moving forward? I have my concerns like you OP!

Shady recruiting and embarrassing academic standards

Jan 3, 2022, 11:31 PM

didn't push you over the edge, but players being able to make money off of their name did it?

This perfect world of college football never existed. It is now just inconvenient for fans that watch for entertainment.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is a great point.

Jan 3, 2022, 11:50 PM

People don’t seem to mind when their good school accepts low IQ athletes just because they are good at football, but they freak out when said player gets an endorsement deal.

I think college football and basketball lost their way when academics were reduced in importance. The results in the decades since gave us athletes who are segregated from the rest of the student body because they are special and treated as more important. This, plus the crazy dollars infused into college sports, and now athletes (understandably) think they deserve a piece of the pie.

I agree. I’d love to see Clemson band together with other like-minded schools

Jan 3, 2022, 11:43 PM

and start a group of FBS-level programs that prioritizes academics first.

Such a league would require athletes to meet the same requirements for admission that non-athletes must have. It would have no transfer portal. And it would focus on preparing athletes for careers and life as much as it does the NFL. It could be revolutionary.

I realize that all of this is a pipe dream, because there is too much money in the current system for Clemson and other schools. It would also result in a much less talented product on the field, which most alumni would be against. I just wish college sports would return to their original intent. We are so far away from that now that it’s disgusting.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I don’t think that’s the case for every program but do agree it is for most and the the trending of college football. I’m not saying this being biased but I feel like we graduate nearly all of our football players and I believe that’s been part of the culture and pushed since Dabo took over … it’s important to him and he’s made that very clear many times… so regardless of standards we are getting kids in (even if it’s bc of football ) and they are leaving with something very valuable and to be honest if we continue this path and culture and can’t compete money wise and we are stuck winning 9-10 games but run the ocean the same , I’m fine with that … I feel very blessed to be able to witness the last 10 years …it’s been a hell of a ride but It give me even greater sense of pride knowing how we did it … and knowing we didn’t fall into this pit college football is headed.

I do have hope that it’s going to get out of hand in the next year or two even more so and something will be done about it as far as guidelines and rules … hopefully

Absolutely, we do a great job educating and graduating

our players within the context of this broken system.

Dabo gets a ton of credit for that.

And if we are being honest, Tommy Bowden really started that emphasis at Clemson within the football program.

But the idea that Clemson accepts a guy with a 950 SAT and C average in high school, simply because he plays football, and a 1250-1300 SAT is needed by a non-athlete applying to Clemson to even have somewhat of a chance of being accepted, is ludicrous in my opinion.

Again, we do this better than most schools. And I am well aware that there are players on our team that would've gotten into Clemson as a regular student - but they are the minority.

I agree with you. NIL and the portal are bad news for college football. Especially the smaller schools with less alumni and money. Yeah it’s great for the players but no benefit for the schools. Just extra work and trouble. The way it’s going one of the most important jobs on the coaching staff will be the transfer portal manager with all the players going in and out. What a freakin mess!

I agree 1000%.

I'm saddened to see college football become a professional pay for play, money grab, no loyalty, grass is greener elsewhere league. And I do not see an easy fix. College presidents must show some profile of courage and say NO MORE! A return to STUDENT-Athletics is required.

I'm feeling about the same way with all the bullshiit that is changing college FB into something that doesn't resemble anything close to what made college sports an "AMATEUR SPORT"!!! Some of these kids are getting paid more money than a 1st round draft pick in their first 4 year contract in the NFL, and there is no other amateur sport in the world that pays that type of money to a kid that competes as an amateur, No Where!!!!

Re: I have loved college football since I was a young kid

Jan 4, 2022, 8:36 AM

Agreed. Admittedly, I will still watch all of the Clemson games and catch a few others each season, but I won't get my hopes up for the pureness of the sport making a return.

Never thought I would say this, but softball seems to still have that pureness that college football once had. It's apparent that the players are giving everything they have and the passion from the fans and players rivals that of the old college football days. So, looking forward to watching that soon!

I really believe there’s a chance that Dabo will stand his ground and weather this storm.

I believe there will always be some special young men who want something stable, and want to be part of a developmental program.

Clemson can be incredibly unique amongst all the chaos. We may not always have the best players, and may win less championships. But we can be really good, and we can be different.

Sure…may be a long shot…but at this point I’m just clinging to the excitement that something like that could bring.
Do your thing, Dabo!

Re: I’m with you. But I have hope for Clemson.

Jan 4, 2022, 2:53 PM

This is the price of being "big time". The big time athletes have devoted themselves to this sport. for many 4-5 star recruits, they have devoted their teen years' vacations and spare time to camps, showcases, weight rooms, and more and more sophisticated HS programs. They hail from places like IMG Academy and Mater Dei, traveling from state to state, with drooling NCAA coaches following their every move. They are aiming for fame and fortune in the nfl. Getting a college degree is a very minor part of the conversation. When your head coach makes $8MM+ a year, and the conference has it's own tv network, the kids and their parents want a payout for all of the sacrifice made thus far. Capitalism at its best.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I’m with you. But I have hope for Clemson.

Jan 4, 2022, 3:23 PM

If somebody like Clemson just decided not to pay up, would people just stop going to the games? How much would revenue really drop? You don't have to be good to make money. Look at Carolina. So if you make plenty of money without those guys, how does it make economic sense to pay up? If the ACC were to say, from now on you have to be a real student and you won't get paid would the stadiums really be empty? I'm not so sure.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I have loved college football since I was a young kid

100% correct. Pay no attention to the ones here who attack you for your valid opinion. They are probably the woo-hoo advocates as well.
In any event college football is not what it use to be. Commitment and loyalty for the most part has vanished. Sad.
