Thoughts on NIL Year 2

Nov 30, 2021, 1:36 PM

Figuring that this season was the 1st of NIL, how do you think this year will impact how businesses and such treat NIL? Some bets have surely paid off, others - not so much. I think particularly of Spencer Rattler and whatever NIL deals he surely had, only to end up riding the pine and now transferring, but also with DJ and his most underwhelming season. I'm sure there were many others that were set up with pretty fat NIL deals at the outset of the season, but whose individual and/or team performances failed to live up to expectations.

Do you think potential sponsors/corporate partners will set these deals up more in retrospect, looking back at what the athlete did this year, rather than looking forward at what the student/athlete is expected to do?

I can't help but wonder how many, if any, of these NIL merch items were sold, like the Justyn Ross gear, or the Swinney Bros gear, or even Shipley's (which, to his benefit, came after he'd established himself with a strong season). Seems like everybody jumped in to try to make a buck or two (file it in the "can't hurt to try" folder?) but now that we have a little precedent, it'll be interesting to see how NIL Year 2, and particularly this off-season, will go.

How do you know that the sponsors of DJ did not get their moneys worth? Even if He did not win the Heismen. The people that He was going to affect to buy something still bought the product.

Mostly I think NIL as it is currently had little to no affect on the play on the field.

I have no idea other than he, and certainly others, didn't live up to pre-season expectations. They may totally feel they got their money's worth, but given the expectations, I don't know.

I agree with you re the big contracts, and those that are legitimate. It's the ones that are a way to write off as business expense, direct payments to players that won't matter. The sponsors sign NILs knowing they won't get a return other than wins on the filed.

The interesting thing will be how many new freshman take a veteran's NiL. Bojangles drops DJ and goes with Cade how will these players handle it.

At my age sports figure recommendations do nothing to sway my buying decisions. But then I’m not the demographic they are targeting.

I see the Dr Pepper type deals that DJ signed slowly going away. Dr Pepper had to make a commercial for every region, with a different college football player, where they could film one with Larry Culpepper and cover the nation. If I saw the Dr Pepper commercial with Spencer Rattler, I probably wouldn't know who he was. EVERY ONE knows Larry Culpepper.

Now the local car dealerships who want to help the school sign that 4 or 5 star player. That's a different story.
