Thoughts from ole fart concerning rivalry with S.C.

Nov 29, 2021, 1:33 PM

After both teams missed playing last year due to Covid (mostly to SEC protecting their teams & brand) and then seeing them play again last weekend..

I feel the old juices that made this such an annual event in a small state are about gone..

maybe b/c of S.C. being in the SEC and downing the ACC for years even though they only won one acc trophy in a very down year where every team was .500 at best...

maybe b/c so many current players come from out-of state and don’t understand it & it’s agricultural vs big city history and that uSC was reduced in size, cope, importance & finances due to the formation of a new state college named Clemson in 1889..

maybe it’s lived beyond it’s true meaning since the state itself is inhabited by so many outsiders who support other teams..

Or maybe it’s b/c the younger, smaller & upstart school (Clemson) holds too much power now on the football field as well as in the business world and the history of why we taters play those birds has passed.

What say you?

You're right, Bill...

Here I was thinking it was just me. I remember when it wasn't rivalry week, it was rivalry year. Growing up, we had usc neighbors and I remember well b4 the week arrived, we were always putting Clemson stuff and signs in each other's yard. Or taping the score on the cars etc. Both ways, there was some kind of prank going on.

We have beaten them so much the joy of winning is not as great as the sorrow of losing would be. BUT, we don't have to worry about that because I cannot see us losing in my remaining lifetime.

I do not mean to diminish the satisfaction that goes along with winning. It's like a good day at the office.

Great points LbB - I think even bigger than that - kids /

young adults are moving away from tying their time & emotions into football.

I think it is an indicator of the continuing anti-socialization brought about by the electronic world we are creating.

Obviously - this is a VERY broad brush I am painting with - there are still lots of kids that support Clemson like we did when we were their age.

But, even as awesome as The Hill was against a Top Ten Wake team, I still can't shake how ridiculously empty the South Stands upper deck was in the student section. You can't say corner - because it was empty DEEP and wide up there.

Really good post.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

Agreed. I can’t figure out why or what but it’s just not the same.

And now they have a coach that is a good guy and is

friends with CDS, and the heated rivalry diminishes even further.

No more, "your wife was flirting with me", or "Carolina is in Chapel Hill and USC is in California".

I miss the good old days...sigh

Its almost entirely because they are not competitive in football

We dominate one of the most lopsided "rivalries" in the sport. So yes, hard to get juiced up for it despite their trash talking garbage fan base.

I remember feeling this way about 13 years ago.

Let them win one and see if those old juices kick back in.

Let them get in your face a time or two. Them leaving the game early, and then hiding for 365 days is the reason it seems less important.

Agreed

It’s like the UGA/Ga. Tech rivalry. The game is a much bigger deal for Ga. Tech and USC because winning it is usually out of their grasp and would be a huge accomplishment.
Whereas, both Clemson and Georgia have their sights set on much bigger prizes than winning their state championship against a weak-sister rival.

Enjoy the streak. Nothing lasts forever. But I hope we continue to play them and continue to kick their chicken keasters.

Maybe. It felt real during the coots' 5-0 run.

Nov 29, 2021, 2:08 PM

And since we have owned them from the past 8 years, it has been less of a concern. But yes, overall it does not feel the same. I think football in general has felt "off" these past two seasons due to COVID, politics, world events, etc. I think people are noticing there are bigger concerns in life. And I agree 100%, the number of non-South Carolinians in SC changes a lot of dynamics.

My earliest Clemson football memory was this game in 1992. My mom is a Clemson fan and my dad was a coot. We listened to the game on the radio. When Steve Taneyhill signed the Paw, my parents got into a huge fight and I had to stay at my aunts place for a few days while dad calmed down.

Things were never the same after that. They split before the game in 1993. This game will always mean everything to me. I hope their fans, even the really ones, step on a Lego while barefoot every time Clemson scores. Nothing will ever change that.

Another point is that the uofsc fans do not moan and groan like they used to. Part of the joy in winning was watching them melt down, especially when the losses were close or contested.

They want to win but know the defeat is coming. They just take their medicine and move on like nothing has happened.

There's no more "wait until next year" because they know next year will be the same.

93" alum with two students at CU now...

One was a ball of nerves the entire week leading up to the game- like me. The other just wanted to hang with friends during the game. Both attended grade/middle/high school in downtown Columbia. The oldest (ball of nerves) was ridiculed immensely in elementary and middle school during their little winning streak. We were 5 bombed at school, church, parties, grocery stores etc. Teachers made fun of their Clemson gear. It was bad. So one has a strong desire to kick their a$$ for the next 100 years as I do. The other....whatever. I do agree that our strong out of state recruitment of players AND students has made a huge difference but for us "locals" it still matters a lot. Also...enlarge the student section make it easier for them to get tickets and bring back the loud mic man! GO TIGERS!!!
