100 Years ago, things were looking up for the 1922 Clemson

football team. There was a marked improvement under 2nd year coach E.J. Stewart, with the team tallying five wins against four losses. While 5-4 may not be stellar, it sure beat the previous years 1-6-2 by a long way.

Even more importantly, order was restored in the annual Big Thursday rivalry game with the Coots, as the Tigers prevailed in Columbia by a 3-0 margin. Now, Coot fans could keep their hands in their pocketses. Clemson upped its all time record against the Coots to 14-5-1.

A little background on one of our foes. Centre College was a small private college located in Danville, Kentucky. Even today, their enrollment is only 1400 students. They still play football, with their modern mascot being simply “The Colonels”. In 1922, they called themselves “The Praying Colonels”. The praying must have worked, as they opened our season by defeating us at Riggs Field by a score of 21-0.

Two true road trips to The Citadel and Furman produced a mixed bag, as we defeated the Minidawgs in Charleston, but fell to the Paladins in Greenville.

For the first time in several years, Auburn was not on the Clemson schedule. Florida replaced them, and proved to be inhospitable hosts, defeating the Tigers in Jacksonville in the final game of the season. All results below:

The Tigers would welcome yet another new Head Coach after this season. Buckle up, some bumpy roads ahead!
