1973 Tiger Distance Runners

Apr 18, 2022, 10:59 AM

Here is the 1973 Cross Country Team:

They may look kinda weak, but these are strong bodies. They are mentally tough, guys who will not yield. They have talent one must be "born" with, then work like hell every day for years.

Ian Davidson, Roy Kulikowski, Dean Matthews, Dave Geer --- !!!
We can all jog around the block, but you can't just "train up" and be these guys.

I have met all these boys, have been in races with all years later in the 80's and 90's, etc --> with Dave even when I was 70 --> (was way behind them of course as I was older and fat. My size 13 shoes weigh more than them).

This 1973 team's Marathon times of 2:11:48, 2:17:26, 2:19:54, and 2:21:30 cannot be matched by any other team in ACC history. It is unlikely 4 guys like this will again be at Clemson at one time.

Boston Marathon

Apr 18, 2022, 11:00 AM

Boston Marathon is today

Any of yall up there this year? Share your experience and photos.
Any of yall done that historic 26.2 miles in the past?

I have been 6 times after taking up jogging late in life with a best of 2:44 there. I enjoyed each trip. Locals put out the red carpet like no place I have ever been.
No other footrace (even Olympics) compares. The BOSTON MARATHON is a step above. Maybe I'll go again when I am 80.

Why is it that most long distance runners look like they are

Apr 18, 2022, 11:04 AM

about a half a biscuit away from shear starvation? You would think their bodies would HAVE to have SOME kind of fat reserve to burn as energy running long distances.

Distance racers burn glycogen. If they run out, their race is over. These boys are far from starving, they are eating more than the fat kids.

My son-in-law is a distance runner and has run the Boston Marathon for years until this year and he too looks like he is starving but can run it with no problem. As for me, I wouldn’t last beyond one mile. LMAO ??

Those guys weren't starving

When I was running cross country and track the coach would always stop at Holiday Inns that had buffets. The only guys that could eat with the distance runners were the shot putters and discus throwers.

Re: Why is it that most long distance runners look like they are

Apr 18, 2022, 2:41 PM [ in reply to Why is it that most long distance runners look like they are ]

I ran track and cross country in college. Today, I'm 6'1", 190 lbs. In college, I was 6'1", 135 lbs. I would lose 10 pounds (dropping to 125) during a hard workout day of running 6-7 miles at a 5 minute clip. Our easy days were on Sunday where we'd run 20 miles at a leisurely 7 minute mile pace. I would eat as much as I possibly could stand 3 times a day. The more carbs, the better.

It is impossible to gain meaningful weight while you're seriously training. And looking at these guys, I bet they had the same mentality as me... skip the weight room. Any muscle gain I had was simply through running. I didn't want any more muscle gain weight. Running fast, to me, was running light. So I never lifted for upper body strength (which was a mistake, but there it is).

Now that I'm old and fat, I look at that picture of those young men and reminisce. I don't know if I'd call those "good days" because it's grueling work to be a competitive runner. And I was FAR less competitive than those dudes. But, serious runners... you won't find any fat on them and when you're 18-22, and you won't find a ton of muscle either.

I ran

That is a very impressive team, amazing we had 4 guys run those time. Also, your 2:44 time is very good. I love Boston and am sure it is an amazing race to run and even to just be a spectator. Thanks for sharing.

Tugaloo ..... I remember all of those guys and they were incredible.

In 1971 when I was stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, a lot of us, mostly air wing guys there (I was a combat engineer) were big into fitness and running. I ran, but not as much as many of them. Several of them, including my best friend there, Rich Waldner (California dude and backseat F-4 Phantom driver ..... actually a RIO) went to run in the Boston Marathon. Rich bought a brand new pair of running shoes the day before the race ..... usually not a good idea. He ran the entire race with these shoes and did not have a single blister. They were this new fangled local brand named "New Balance". The bottoms looked like "crepe" soles, nothing like the stuff we have today. The Nike "Waffle Trainer" was the big new shoe at the time.

PS: I think the New Balance show cost like $25, and if you wore the sole out you could send them back and for $15 they would replace the soles!

When I was in the military just ran after girls.

Yeras later when I took up jogging, at my first race in 1981, arrived in new NB shoes. I was nervous some might notice and expect me to be a real runner.
Running shoes have come a long way. My body is not good mechanically. I injure a lot. Good shoes are cheaper than good doctors.

I understand. He is a leader many here follow.
The Swamp Fox does not post on my threads as we are extremely competitive for POTD.
Like him I also was a coach. I coached older women joggers who saw me as a god.

Boston

Apr 18, 2022, 5:03 PM

Got up late (as usual) and just finished watching this year's Boston (recorded to skip endless comercials) as I sit on the porch.

I have done about 75 Marathons, but only about a dozen where I tried for my "best".
'Best" is when you train for weeks or months with that goal in mind, and show up with a plan. It is living like a monk with no other thing in your life. That is difficult to impossible if you have a job or a family. Most folks my age could not do that.

Just running a Marathon is fun. Unlike doing a long run alone, folks will be along the way handing you gatoraid and yelling for you. At the end they give you a T-shirt. One time I won $200 in the Masters division when just jogging one. It is much easier than doing a long run alone.

Giving my "best effort" would mean a month for physical recovery, and 2 months before my brain could blot out the pain. Brains bruise.

5 of the 6 times I went to Boston -- I was "all in" --> trained as best I could and did the best I could.
I always believed I could 2:39:59 there on a perfect trip but never did.

The 6th time was with a couple younger friends when I was 50. They had never been so I was the bar guide. Our goal was to jog, enjoy the day, and have a beer after the race in as many different bars as possible.
We all did a prior sub 3hour Marathon to get a decent number, so it was not like we were ? It was a fun trip. Folks in Boston treat you well.

I am rich

Apr 18, 2022, 6:12 PM

Just checked ebay.
Finisher medals before Boston went woke for $$ and let in all folks --> are now priceless. I have 6.

Apparently many folks collect them.
In the day only about 5000 folks could get under the 2:50 (2:59 for girls) rule to get a ticket, so it was not crowded. Most who lined up could kick my old ###, but I always held my own.
I could do around 2:45 and was middle of the pack in those years.

Now I am sitting on a fortune.
