Tavien Feaster officially enters NCAA Transfer Portal

Clemson senior running back Tavien Feaster has entered his name into NCAA transfer portal, TigerNet has confirmed with a school official. Feaster still could re Read Update »

Feaster is a Two-Time Champion Tiger if he stays
Feaster is a Two-Time Champion Tiger if he goes somewhere else
Feaster has a chance at being a Three-Time Champion Tiger if he stays
Feaster has a chance at more playing time if he goes
Feaster will be a former Clemson Tiger in the Pros in future years if he stays
Feaster will be a former Clemson Tiger in the Pros in future years if he goes
Feaster will have my support if he stays - both individually and for the team
Feaster will have my support if he goes - but just individually

In the end, Feaster needs to weigh his options and do whatever is best for him. The same thing any graduate transfer is entitled to. Because whatever Feaster chooses, it will be as a Clemson grad and as a Clemson Tiger.

Re: TNET: Tavien Feaster officially enters NCAA Transfer Portal

Apr 24, 2019, 7:26 PM

When Etienne became so much more of a featured back last year, it made our running game so effective, yet i worried about this possible moment for Feaster.

Now it's here. I'm sickened by our potential loss, even while acknowledging how much better it might be for him to play elsewhere.

It seems to me--i'm not a coach, nor a competent evaluator of RBs-- that a spread offense requires consistency and split second timing between its many meshing parts in order to be productive in the running game. If a RB hits a hole before a pulling tackle or TE has created it, he will end up blasting full speed into the back of his teammate. If he delays that split second and follows the block in good timing, the smallest crease becomes a huge gap and he can have a big gain before even being touched.

My point is that in a spread, the entire offense seems to take on the timing of the primary RB, which right now is Etienne. He adds the little delay tactics in the backfield that allow him to hit the hole or crease with precise timing. Feaster and Choice both seemed to be in Blast mode--get the ball and blast through the hole on a straight line towards the end zone.

I thought our success in the running game using multiple backs last year usually came from using multiple sets and varying the looks we gave defenses. Good play callers can do that. And don't forget that we flat wore out a few defenses, too.

In short, i think the only way Feaster could show out for us in 2019 is if--God forbid--Etienne went down, and the offense had to mesh around him. He certainly has all the factors to allow him to play successfully in the NFL (I'm told). So while it hurts to say this, i hope he can go somewhere that will feature him for this year. He's always been a great Tiger. I love me some Feaster. Gonna miss him bigtime.

Disagree

Apr 24, 2019, 10:25 PM

He’s had every opportunity to be The Guy for us. I’m pretty sure he was a higher rated recruit out of HS than any of our current backs. I could be wrong about that. But I’m not wrong in saying he’s had opportunities and not capitalized on them. Productive, yes, but not to the extent of others. I thank him for being an outstanding and supportive teammate and ambassador for Clemson if he in fact leaves.

But I also do not agree with him leaving. I’m of the opinion his best shot at the NFL is as the first off the bench for the defending National Champions.

I cannot wait to see how the Huggins situation pans out... Seriously. Either way, neither of the aforementioned players should be synonymous with KB.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Disagree

Apr 25, 2019, 3:17 PM

If Feaster does transfer, I think he is really rolling the dice. Staying at Clemson, he would be a lock for the NFL, and the rotation with other backs would spare him a real physical pounding. I just don't see the gain for him in transferring out of what is likely the top collegiate program in the country to a totally new program. He gets somewhere else and suddenly realizes that he's made a terrible mistake, then it's too late. The whistle's blown and the train is gone. He's stuck! He stays here, he's almost certainly a 1st round NFL draft pick, and very possibly will have played in another national championship game. Whatever, I wish him the very best, but suspect that he may be on the verge of a major mistake.

Apr 24, 2019, 8:10 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Tavien Feaster officially enters NCAA Transfer Portal ]

I get it. Players want to play! I think it was Parcels that said, "everybody thinks it's about the money for a pro football player. But, threaten to take away a starting job or significant playing time works better"!

Players want to play! Every kid that signs envisions themselves making plays in a Clemson uniform. When you get to campus and come to realize; oh snap; all these other guys who have perhaps more ability or other more desirable strengths than me have that same vision. Etienne and Dixon both have been said to have pass pro problems. Feaster had made himself in the best. Straight line speed where the play is blocked perfect; he is your guy b/c of his pure speed. I just don't think his vision is all as good as Etienne. He has good vision and is a really good RB. Could start for most teams! But, it's not about how long you been on campus. It's not about anything other than: "how productive of a player are you when the lights are on"!
Our coaches are nice guys! But, they are also in the business of winning! Coach Swinney has said many times they recruit the kid 1st(the person 1st). I believe that 100%. But, people may get that confused and muddy the water to mean something else. That man wants to win! He wants to win; but win doing it his way! Grind hard and do it with kids who buy in!
You have to have more talent than the guy in the position room to get the start or get significant playing time! If not, you can't complain about it. You have to grind and get better! TF has worked his butt off; but me may be making a emotional decision right now! I wish him the best regardless of course!
But, unless he goes to Michigan St. or Wisconsin who still have a #1 TB - more than likely he will be sharing carries! If that's what this is about!
If it's about something else; odd that it comes at the start of year 4.

Apr 25, 2019, 3:33 PM

Just curious. What top-line program is he going to transfer to that doesn't already have top-line running backs? Are these guys going to just lay down and say "Oh yeah Tabien, come on in and take our jobs?" What school would that be? Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, LSU, Florida etc., etc? I don't think so. Is there any big-time program out there that is going to give him some kind of guarantee coming in? No!
There may be more to this than we know. Is there a fox in the hen house here?

No matter what happens, Tavien, you and your family are welcome at the Gallman family tailgate on Cemetery Hill for as long as you live. You showed love to my son at youth day every time he chased you down. You showed him love in La at the children's hospital for the playoff and after home games too. You will always be one of our favorite Tigers and you were key to every championship and season you played at Clemson. Go be great where ever you are led!

Re: TNET: Tavien Feaster officially enters NCAA Transfer Portal

Apr 24, 2019, 8:18 PM

Here is what I don’t understand. We know running backs only have so many carries in those legs. The knock on Bama running backs is they never pan out in the NFL because there is too much wear and tear by the time they finish college. Feasted has an opportunity to shine on a prominent team without being way overused, which would hurt his NFL career long-term. That seems like a dream scenario. Is the issue that Lynn-J surpassed him?

Portal Question(s)

Apr 24, 2019, 9:33 PM

Are you obligated to leave once you enter the portal? Or is it a deal where; you are with school A until you sign elsewhere? And, when do you have to leave, etc. Is there an official forfeit of your scholarship required to go into the portal?

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Apr 24, 2019, 9:42 PM

That once you enter the portal, you may come back to the original school if they want you.

It is also my understanding, the original school no longer has to honor your scholarship once you enter the portal.

Great post. Feaster should be grateful that he is at a program where he won't be run into the ground. In the past, so many great backs were such physical wrecks by the time they reached the NFL that they just couldn't perform in that venue. It's common knowledge that Dabo plays so many players that we reach the playoffs in typically good shape. The common term for this is, "Smart!"

He doesn’t have his degree, yet. He MAY be able to graduate in August. Maybe.

Graduating in August, transferring to another school, and learning a new offense prior to the season doesn’t
seem better than the hand dealt staying.

I hope it works out for him, and the change of scenery helps- but without a redshirt year that will be tough.

Re: TNET: Tavien Feaster officially enters NCAA Transfer Portal

Apr 24, 2019, 11:45 PM

I want to congratulate Tavien for his dedication on getting his degree from Clemson University. Therefore, Tavien will now be for all time a Clemson MAN and I wish for him the best results wherever he go (or if he stays). Football is only a minor part of what makes each player a man of the future.

It upsets me for people to be sarcastic about Tavien Feaster, Kelly Bryant or others for leaving if they have graduated on time. Tavien should not be vilified for his desire to improve himself by transferring because he was a dedicate player that played a major roll in two of Clemson’s National titles.

Most fans that criticize players and coaches have no idea what a physical grind it is to be a football player. They spend 20 to 30 more hours practicing than game playing. If the coach assigns him to be third sting behind two others players with reduced playing time, then, Tavien must do what is best for him. It’s a lock that he will be 1st string and can showcase his potential elsewhere.

He needs be be somewhere that he can be a featured player. His decision is no more than any other person changing work professions seeking the best circumstances for him to be successful for his family and himself.

Please name names and posts. There has been an honest discussion on this thread as to the wisdom of his decision, but virtually everyone has expressed a desire that he stay and remain a tiger. It is this kind of gross disinformation that lowers the tone and tenor of frank discussion on this site, and makes it more difficult for fans to openly and frankly discuss issues related to the football program. And, how do you know that he will be a "lock" to be first string at another school. What school? What other RB's will he beat out? Re: TNET: Tavien Feaster officially enters NCAA Transfer Portal

Apr 25, 2019, 4:21 AM

Remember we have two backs coming to Clemson in a few weeks and they both could be very special. They both are very talented. We might be surprised as to how good they are. Darion Rencher has looked good in cleanup time and this kid has worked to earn anything he gets as a walk on.

Tony has a knack for finding RB’s with special talent if we look at ETN and lyn-J. I can’t wait to see these two guys after getting coached up and muscled up over the Summer. Don’t Forget we have a CB recruit that came in last year that was considered a better RB than CB.

We aren’t hurting for talent at RB no matter what Feast mode picks, personally I’d like to see him stay and grow but I’m thankful for his play up to now. He’s a local kid an I’m very proud of Him. ( the good Lord would have to help me be at peace if he chooses to go to the Coots)

Good luck to him.

He has been a fine student, fine athlete, and fine young man for us. If he feels is chance at the NFL is better served by having more playing time elsewhere, then so be it, and I wish him well.

All kids fall into two categories during their time in College. Either, they are playing their last 4 seasons of football ever (barring messing around with their kids in the back garden, somewhere in the future); or they have just 4 seasons to impress NFL coaches and scouts in order to get drafted. Either way, as much as we may want them to stay loyal to our team, and warm the bench, they have to maximise their time at College.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He gets enough playing time to get in the NFL.

I knew giving him the hallowed 28 was a mistake. I wanted to be Feaster’s biggest fan. We share a hometown. If he chooses to leave, he becomes the next quitter who took his ball, and went home. I’m not a cheerleader who pays guys on the back who leave, and tell them “you’ll always be a Tiger!” Nope. Like Russel Wilson. He lost the right to be a Wolfpack member, and is forever a quitter who ran to be a Badger! Go ahead, Feaster. Run away. Because you aren’t driven enough to out work a kid with 3 stars by his name. SMDH. We will be fine with, or without you. You’ve bought shame on Spartanburg, SC. You made a commitment to Clemson University. It’s like a marriage. You don’t run away when things get tough. You work harder!

He heard about some sort of silient commitment from one or 2 of the five star rb's we are recruiting . Whatever the case I wish him luck. Really enjoyed watching him play .
