This world has lost two great Clemson men with the passing of Joe21 and Ben Skardon.

But oh to see them in Heaven now! They’ve shed their human bodies and are at peace.
It’s so important that we pass on their stories to our children and grandchildren, so that they realize how important The Greatest Generation is to our nation’s history.

I read a very interesting book, not about General Skardon specifically, but about the march, the camp he ended up in, and the liberation of that camp. That place was filled with extraordinary men!

Just a few weeks shy of his 100th birthday. I was always amazed at his stories, but also at the clarity that came through in his posts at such an advance age. He was sharp as a tack intellectually until his physical body gave out on him.

stunned and saddened as I was upon learning of Joe's death.
The General was one of my profs while at Clemson, which makes his passing even more poignant, considering I am in my mid-seventies.

Don't forget that we lost Lt. William Funchess, Clemson's ex-POW (3 years) from the Korean War, on June 10, 2021. (The Unbreakable Tiger). We just lost Col. Skardon, 5 months later, who was a POW in WWII. Lt. Funchess was one of Joe's good friends, and the third POW, Col. Bill Austin, Viet Nam, is still living. Two of Clemson's famous POW's are now gone.

Thank you for posting. I had Colonel Skardon for two classes and he never talked about his service. I didn't find out about it until our daughter's ring ceremony. He was, in every sense of the word, the best ambassador for the greatest generation. Every time I write, including this post, I think about his technical writing class and hoping he would be proud - but knowing he would still have some constructive comments
