Redskins trademark cancelled by Patent Office.

Jun 18, 2014, 11:42 AM

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/redskins/2014/06/18/redskins-trademark-revoked-us-patent-office/10735053/

So the executive branch just enforced political correctness by circumventing Democracy.

Their justification? Because it "offends" a certain group of people.

While this may seem like a trivial thing, it's not. One branch of the federal government has made a significant judgement financially impacting hundreds of thousands of people (retailers, fans, etc.) all in the name of protecting certain people from being offended.

Think of the precedent this sets. One of the easiest things on Earth to abuse is the concept of being offended. Everyone can literally be offended by anything. There is no systematic or rational way to decide what is and isn't offensive. Political correctness is disgusting and debilitating. All I can do is shake my head and buy more ammo.

Defense spending wrecked the economy.Without the massive pressure from Germans it would likely have lasted indefinitely longer. Look at the Byzantine Empire. Remnants of Roman empire lasted until 15th century... and were brought down by the Ottomans.

But then again you could argue that the only reason for the "barbarian" pressure on the border was because of over-expansion, which could be considered a decision from within.

Jun 18, 2014, 11:58 AM

What happens in our country when one political party offends the people who support the other political party? I see trouble down the road on that one.

Instead of checks and balances -- with differences of opinion freely expressed from all sides--as the Founding Fathers intended you may see one side or the other in power attempt to eliminate any other opinions from the opposition in an attempt to "not offend anyone." It would be a deal breaker for American democracy and freedom. Game over.

I thought the Alien and Sedition Acts were old news but this opens it all up again.

As a Native American, on this issue, they made the right call. I understand the concerns expressed re governmental power (as a government employee, these are mostly accurate) and interferrence. However, on this one specific issue, it was the right thing to do. One could not have seen the commercial (slated for the Super Bowl (and turned down by the NFL)aired during the NBA playoffs and reached any other conclusion.

offended by a team and large group of fans honoring the Redskins? Doing all they can to make them win and be great?

Most actual Native Americans I've talked to on this subject enjoy seeing the Redskins as a mascot, their only offense is how bad they've played the last 20 years.

You sound like a PC bullshitter who just pays lawyers to let them continue to do this ########.

Pretty much the same that I've heard from the NAs I've spoken to as well. I also heard that they think that the ones that are pursuing this grievance are just using it as a tool to further themselves on the political scene.

I disagree that it is the right thing to do. People would be

Jun 18, 2014, 4:34 PM [ in reply to Re: Because it "offends" a certain group of people. ]

much better off if they realized that being offended over such a thing requires actively interpreting it in a negative way.

For instance, there is no rational reason why "white" people should not be allowed to be offended by being called "white" while Asians may be offended for being called "yellow."

It is a "learned" offense. Most people are offended for bogus, socially constructed reasons. This pathological behavior has gained momentum. What is good for people is to realize there is nothing inherently offensive about a word. You have to be swallowed up in group-think to reach any other conclusion.

People die of cancer, yet there are cancer jokes. Certain people can make then and its ok, but others can't. It's arbitrary. The whole dang hierarchy of offensive words is an irrational joke.

And being a native american is irrelevant here. Me being 1/16th Cherokee has nothing to do with it. Just like me being quarter Jew has nothing to do with Holocaust jokes.

While I find the term Redskins to be tasteless and offensive

Jun 18, 2014, 11:58 AM

, it troubles me that the government can use the patent office to try to engineer social change. This sets a bad precident. What if Schneider decides to not change the name(which, once again, i think he should)? Will the government then decide to tear up the roads leading to the practice facilities under the guise of construction? Will they pressure the local govt. to rezone the area where Schneider lives?

I agree with everything you said, but

Jun 18, 2014, 12:10 PM

I wish we would demolish the entire concept of "offensive." I'm only offended if someone does something to actually damage the health or interests of me or something/someone I care about.

This whole thing about white people finding finding "Redskin" offensive opens a semantics hole. "Offensive" shouldn't be a blanket term to describe things that "should" be offensive. We must recognize that taking offense is dependent on individual perspective.

This "offended" behemoth is causing people to LOOK for ways to be offended. It's directly tied to people's sense of self worth. And everyone is looking now at our GOVT to save us from feeling paranoid about ourselves? It's gotten to the point where everything remotely controversial goes through a "is that offensive?" filter.

What we have now is an ocean of hypocrisy and dishonest communication. And we wonder why Democracy is currently failing us. It relies on human beings actually saying what they believe. Instead we have a bunch of professional liars who must stay politically correct. We did this to ourselves.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep. Actually, I'm not offended by Redskins. But I don't

Jun 18, 2014, 1:34 PM

see it as a word that in any way can be construed as anything other than derogatory. The use of Braves, Irish, Padres or Indians aren't derogatory to a group. Redskins is the one term that can't really be argued in a positive light.

People do you the "offending" term too foten and use it as an excuse for prosecution to further their beliefs. So I should not have said that I find the term offending.

This will likely force a change in the mascot because the symbol is no longer protected and anyone can make money off the symbol without paying royalties to the organizaiton. This could be huge for the Washington organizaiton as a chance to re-brand and make a windfall in the first couple of years.

Arguably the decision is a "taking of property" by the government which requires the government to compensate the property owner for the value of the property taken. Imaging being the law firm getting 1/3 of a billion dollars (or more) since the value of the Redskins franchise has just been substantially diminished.

If i were to wear a pentagram to church and talk about how ridiculous the notion of jesus is, there would be a backlash. why? its just a symbol. what about the confederate flag? it spews hate and ignorance and has no redeeming qualities except to hurt others.

I assure you jesus would be offended at the churches and hating of minorities and blacks that goes on there by so called christians.
