I gotta get this off my chest

knee-jerk raction, rant, etc. to Simone Biles
I'm going to preface this with me stating I'm a huge Simone Biles fan. I think she's great for the sport, and even better for young chicks out there.
BUT
IF Simone Biles really pulled out of this event b/c of "mental health" issues (which is what numerous outlets are reporting) - that's ####### pathetic. And don't give me that ######## of "we don't know the pressure they go through" ... get the #### out of here. If she can't take the heat, she can go be a ####### analyst for Coca Cola like everyone else. Earn a paycheck punching the ####### clock every week.
How she gone prance around in a god #### leotard with a shiny ####### goat on it all god #### year, and bow out for mental health problems? Give me a ####### break. I've bout had it w/ this ########.
And she still went up there to get a medal. #### that. That's the straw that broke my ############# back. Quit on her ####### team and walked up there and had the gall to celebrate. Makes me ####### sick.
You think Tom Brady would sit the Super Bowl out b/c his head wasn't right? You think Michael ####### Jordan would let the Russians beat him in anything b/c he was feeling down? Tiger Woods won a ####### US Open w/ one knee. DW4 walked into the #### roach and slapped those cocksuckers around w/ a torn ACL. Keri Strug stuck a vault to win the gold at home and was carried to the podium to get her god #### medal.
Competitors compete at the highest level, with anything but a win being unacceptable. #### this god #### generation. Hopefully she feels ok.
If she's hurt, and doesn't compete for the rest of the tourney, I'll come in here and eat crow and admit I'm a piece of #### jumping to conclusions, and y'all can rake my fat ### over the coals.

Interviewer was like, "Would you say you're unbeatable?" I thought anyone who would say yes to that would have to be smug AF, but she said yes. Now she's having a meltdown because she made a mistake? That's some real sore loser behavior imo.
On the other hand, I give zero fucks about women's gymnastics or people who are 4'8" tall.

I've not seen anything about mental health issues.
Jul 27, 2021, 11:29 AM

I've seen that she left the floor and had her foot wrapped by a trainer. It's also been reported that she's been battling a foot injury. I'd assume she didn't get to where she is by being a quitter, so I'll assume that she feels like whatever is wrong would have beeen a detriment to the team.

She was in tears at the trials, did not perform well (by her GOAT standards), and looked off.
What we're seeing is a televised mental breakdown.
IMO, as a mental health professional and a Conservative, both things are true: 1) today's generation and the past couple have been SOFT when it comes to facing adversity, but that is at least as much on their parents as it is them, and 2) mental health problems are REAL problems. Simone has clearly been suffering.
In Simone's case she probably took on too much with he GOAT hype AND trying to be a spokesperson for the sexual abuse she and others experienced. She was better, more focused, when she did not try to address the sexual abuse and before she got the GOAT hype.
But don't judge her. That's a tough spot to be in.

I don't want anyone to interpret this as me being insensitive to people's mental health here. I will say this though anxiety and depression are real, with demonstrable pathophysiology. Bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, etc same thing.
Everyone on Earth faces pressure, stress, disappointment, and adversity, but I don't consider those mental illnesses. If she or anyone are suffering from stress or pressure, then disconnecting from it is the right move. Performing under pressure is just as important as physical skill and separates the good from the great. Just my opinion.

Eh, that's harsh. Have you even considered that
Jul 27, 2021, 12:03 PM

Had a brother that almost certainly murdered someone and was acquitted via mistrial I think in May of this year?
She spent the first few years of her life in/out of foster care with no mother around?
Turned professional at I think age 16 or so?
Did not compete in 2017?
Early 2018 released a statement alleging she was sexually abused by that Nassar guy?
Is currently 24 years old?
I'm not sure what your life looked like up until age 24, but goodlawd mane she's had a lot going on...and as been in the pressure cooker since a young age. Doesn't really surprise me that she is having mental health struggles.
Was the timing great for all the hard core USA female team gymnastic fans? Nah. But give the kid a break.
Many that are sexually abused as teens NEVER completely recover. I'm talking about grandmothers that STILL have nightmares about what happened half a century ago.

As a person
Jul 27, 2021, 12:58 PM
|
|
I agree - she deserves all the credit in the world. On a macro scale, maybe 4 or 5 people on the planet can relate to the amount of pressure she's enduring, and those 4 or 5 people can't relate to the extra stuff.
She seems like a fantastic young woman who has been a world class example to young kids throughout the globe.
I have no ill will towards her as a person.
But, she left her team high and dry and the pinnacle of her sport because her mind wasn't right (allegedly - the crow I may be eating is growing by the post). She needs to be criticized of that, heavily.
Generational talents - icons of their sport - ####### win on the biggest stages. Right, wrong or indifferent, the pinnacle of her sport is the Olympics where she can compete for her country. She failed to do that. Period.
I can relate to mental issues. Family life sucked from about age 14 (when I moved out) until age 21. I had a mild stroke at 17 (doctors said caused by stress), was told I'd never play ball again. I came back, won a state title, graduated, and made an ACC roster where I played for 2 years.
Y'all need to stop putting words in my mouth with this whole mental health ########. People deal with stressful ####.
Like I said earlier, competitors ####### compete. They show up to dominate. Anything else is unacceptable.

growing up and I'm impressed at how you rebounded and went on to accomplish some good stuff.
I ain't putting words in your mouf. You are saying plain and simple she should be "criticized heavily". I disagree, and I think that's harsh.
No doubt everyone deals with stuff. But if she can't go, she can't go. She's made the comment that she was mentally off enough that she thought she may injure herself. Perhaps she will return and compete in many more events that are still possible for her.
It's possible this is a quarterly, monthly, weekly, or even DAILY issue for her. Again, consider her background. You don't know and I don't either. We may never know.
Difference is, I'm not willing to run her down the road over it.
High and dry? Failed to compete? Bruh she has 30 Olympic and World Championship medals. Some call her the best gymnast in the world. Of all time. She pulled out of one meet and they won a silver fuckingmedal at the Olympics.

I don't get the concept of it being "unacceptable"? Why would I as a sports fan be in a position to "accept" or not "accept" what athletes are doing? It's like saying LeBron's performance in Space Jam was unacceptable? What does that even mean? He doesn't work for me.

Did Guillermo quit in the middle of the national championship game b/c he rolled a snap to DW4?
That would be a similar comparison.
Pretty sure Jay broke his foot and had issues spiraling into that offseason. He then met w/ coaches and medical staff after the season to take time off to get his head right and came back stronger than ever. Read some of his comments coming out of that - his teammates were there for him. Picked him up, made him better as a player and a person. That's what teammates do. That's the whole point.
I'm sure Biles has tons of mental health issues. But that doesn't make leaving her team in the middle of the Olympics ok...if in fact that's what the actual issue was and she wasn't hurt (which, like I said, I'll come in here and eat some crow).
