Aggie students proud of their Clemson Dollars souvenirs

Sep 12, 2018, 3:20 PM

My A&M student sent me a picture of his Clemson $2 bills he received in change this weekend. He said he was talking to a Clemson fan while leaving the game, and he was telling my son that most people don’t like when they spend Clemson dollars in their town....but surprisingly Aggies had been coming up to him and asking him for the bills. He asked my son why people were doing that in College Station, and my son replied, “I guess we can appreciate the tradition, sir.” My son is now the proud owner of 5 Orange-Paw $2 bills. I wish I could attach the picture.

Thank you Clemson fans for all the wonderful things you’ve said about your visit to Aggieland. We truly appreciate that you chose to come take part in our traditions too. This weekend was the most visitor color we’ve ever seen at Midnight Yell!

You aggies are kindred spirits. I was treated great at A&M years ago. An Miss Rev is the best looking real mascot in college football. My goal is to some day meet her. Good luck the rest of the way. BTW we enjoy the $2's also. I almost hate to spend them.

I have 2 sizes of the Paw stamp, one the size a Nickel, and the other about the size of a Penny. With plastic as our main currency, I don't have cash that often, but when I do I will stamp it all with our Tiger Paw just for getting out around Cootlumbia as a reminder there are hard core Tigers among them :)!!!

I read in the mornings paper that A&M is the most financially sound program in the country. Thanks to our two dollar bills I guess.

He also imagined the same old guy sitting in the library hand stamping those things for years and years. So can you tell me more about how the $2 bills get their orange paw?

Has been going on for over 40 years. I was told it started in Atlanta to prove how much GT gained by playing Clemson. I have actually been to a bowl game where they were refused......go figure

Each of the 41 games played between Clemson and Georgia Tech between 1903 and 1973 were played in Atlanta, and coaches’ wives as well as a good number of Tigers’ fans savored the visit. “We weren’t going to any bowl games at that time, so it was our big game of the year,” said George Bennett, former executive director of IPTAY, Clemson University’s fundraising arm for athletics. “It was an exciting town – new hotels, a lot of new restaurants and all that.

“We were taking 15,000 to 17,000 people down there for that weekend. Our people would actually go down on Wednesday, and wives would shop and all that stuff and stay in those fancy hotels and all that, and people really enjoyed going down there.”

But that tradition was thrown a curveball in 1977, when “out of the clear blue,” Bennett said, Georgia Tech called to say that it was dropping Clemson from its schedule and adding William & Mary.

The schedule change prompted one Atlanta hotel manager to quip, “Well, I hope William will bring Mary, because that’s the biggest crowd they’ll bring down here.”

It also prompted Bennett to conjure up a unique idea – namely, to coax Clemson fans into using $2 bills on their 1977 trip to Atlanta in an effort to demonstrate the financial impact Clemson fans had on the city.

Bennett approached then-coach Charley Pell with the idea and garnered full support. Bennett publicized the effort in IPTAY mailings, and the initial effort was a rousing success.

We covered the city up with $2 bills,” Bennett said. “The Atlanta Journal Constitution wrote articles about it, and the waitresses in the restaurants were talking about it, and the cab drivers and bellhops.”

The next year, when Clemson played in the 1978 Gator Bowl, fans began stamping their $2 bills with orange Tiger Paws, further enhancing a tradition that continues to thrive.

Most Clemson fans now leave their marked money behind on all road trips.

“Now when we go to a bowl, the (bowl) committee when they come and talk to us, the first thing they say is, ‘Tell your people to bring the $2 bills,’” Bennett said.

I was a junior that year and my parents came and stayed with one of his fraternity brothers. My date and I also stayed with them. it was great road trip and a nice win.

My dad went to the banks and rustled up a fair number of $2.00 bills. I was able to covert all my money into 2's, probably about $20 worth. lol

I might add, at the time GT had the attitude they were doing us a HUGE favor by allowing us to play them.

Proud Aggie Mom...thanks for sharing your story and glad we helped brighten your son's
day.
I've been to countless Clemson away games and College Station was by FAR the best experience we've had.You have something special there and I hope one day we can visit again.
Come see us in Tigertown and let us return the hospitality.
Good luck the remainder of the season especially when you play the Game Coots!!

Thanks for Aggie hospitality and for posting. Sounds like a fine son : “I guess we can appreciate the tradition, sir.”

I'll add you have some great traditions as well. Not every college in SC have traditions.

So, not sure if I mentioned after the time I spent on your fine board the week before the game, it was only fitting that a family of Tigers sat down next to me in my section of former students. They were surrounded my Maroon. A mother who graduated from Clemson, a father who married into it, and two small boys that were clearly being indoctrinated, decked out in orange and purple. Got their tickets from Aggie friends who normally sit there.

They were great, respectful, classy, teaching their boys to be the same, interested in knowing what the traditions were going on around them, etc. At the start of the 4th quarter, they even sawed varsity’s horns off during the Aggie War Hymn. By the time the final 2 minutes on the clock came and fans on both sides were freaking out, we were actually tense and nervous together.

After we missed the 2 point conversion, missing the chance to send it into overtime, the Mom turned to me and said “I want to give you this.” Thats when I first learned of the $2 bill tradition. It has a paw print on it. Pretty cool, plan to keep it!

We've got to get an extended contract with you guys. Tradition, class and sportsmanship. Playing SCar and Georgia we don't get much of the latter. In addition, we share the tradition of and A&M background prior to becoming a research university. Could you switch off with the chickens? We'd probably win less often but would have a much worthier rival.
