To many of you basketball experts, and Clemson has a plethora of them, but OP Really wasn’t the coach credited with Clemson’s rise to the top. Coach Larry Shyatt was actually the coach who began their rise to the top. OP certainly kept it going.

I have never understood all the praise of OP. Good coach for a few years and brought some energy to the fan base, especially the students. But after the opposition caught on to his pressing defense the results tailed off. After he left Clemson he never had a winning season even at a school with a basketball history. Maybe he was a better recruiter than BB but not a better coach.

So, he was a better recruiter, energized the fan base and student body, and elevated the program from Shyatt's "rebuild" to 3 straight tournament games. Brownell hasn't matched that yet, but at least he hasn't left for another job...

Shyatt was certainly underappreciated. There is no doubt we were the best 10-20 team in the country in 99-00. A lot of people have forgotten that.
