Yes it is. Dumb.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's only a matter of time before they start requiring

Permits for private residence to have parking. I'm sure they will say its for children or emergency services so everyone will get on board with it too. Laugh, but that's how they pass property tax increases every time.

Jun 14, 2016, 9:55 AM

Unfortunately this is another money grab. We already deal with some of the largest markups by hotels in Clemson in the country.

First student tickets now making it harder for fans to find affordable lodging.

The parking makes sense and furthermore I am a season ticket holder with a parking pass so it doesn't effect me; the lodging does.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The lodging is a matter of supply and demand.

Jun 14, 2016, 10:06 AM

The can only sell what people will pay for. As long as they do, they will remain high. Taxing something just to "get in on the action" is just wrong and the reason our country is spiraling out of control with taxes.

Re: The lodging is a matter of supply and demand.

Jun 14, 2016, 11:05 AM

It would help the tax situation everywhere IF religious institutions were forced to pay their share of taxes. Thats why there are so many mega churches flourishing everywhere No taxes allows you to do a lot of 'things'!

2 questions...

Jun 14, 2016, 10:05 AM

What is the business license cost?

Will churches be exempt?

How can they enforce it? It's all cash and they could claim friends parked there.

Okay, so it was three.

Money Grab

Jun 14, 2016, 10:09 AM

Just another example of a local government inventing a way to make a buck.

I have personally rented homes on Airbnb for football weekends but usually I rent somewhere out on the lake. Since the business license is only applied to houses in the city limits I wouldn't think this would affect the houses for rent just outside of Clemson.

Don't have a problem with it

So no more lemonade stands either?

Jun 14, 2016, 1:48 PM

This is an unnecessary restriction on business and a money grab by the City of Clemson.

You'll see a lot less houses selling parking this year and they'll be charging a lot more. It'll also probably be very poorly publicized so the city cops can write tickets to everybody who is unknowingly breaking the law.

Offer free parking in your yard

Jun 14, 2016, 11:15 AM

Then accept a "donation" to help with the clean up costs. That way you can incorporate as a 501(c); and since technically you will be a non-profit organization you should not have to have a commercial business license.

I'm sure the churches will go this route.

Patron: "What's the right amount to donate?"

Owner: "Most people donate $20."

Patron: "Here's $10."

Owner: "I'm sorry, lot is full."

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

easy remedy. make parking in your yard free, but charge

Jun 14, 2016, 12:03 PM

a 300 dollar "key retrieval" service for people who actually want to drive their vehicles off your property. You could maybe train a dog to run and get the keys and bring them back. It would be so cute that there couldn't possibly be any trouble. Of course, then the city council would demand that the dogs apply for a business license, so that could be an issue.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dont charge people to park on property

Jun 14, 2016, 1:29 PM

... to have to pay a "brokerage license."

Unless someone wants to take the town to court over egregious disruption of private property rights, this one was a no-brainer.

That said, honestly, I have no problem with them requiring an inspection for house rental.

badge-donor-20yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-revdodd.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So take donations instead?***

Jun 14, 2016, 12:44 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is probably the easiest workaround

Jun 14, 2016, 2:06 PM

or, depending on how the law is written if it says you can't sell them you can rent them instead. I bet the actual law's wording is incredibly simple and there are probably a bunch of loopholes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: FB Update: Clemson approves changes to game day parking

Jun 14, 2016, 1:01 PM

Standard government grab with no benefit.

Having a "business license" for eight days a year when you are unable to enjoy your residence or access it, is laughable. A business license provides no benefit to anyone. Ordinances for trash already exist. If you don't sell parking you are still responsible for the mess left by the crowd. No need to be punished with redundancy.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

More of a "statement" money grab than an actual one...

Jun 14, 2016, 1:54 PM

I mean, how many residences are actually meeting ALL these conditions:
a) within city limits
b) within walking distance of DV
c) selling parking in their yards?

It's not like there are hundreds and hundreds of these folks out there who will be getting these new licenses and generating a ton of revenue for the city. Seems like it's more of a political shot at some other folks, or maybe churches as some have mentioned.

The thing about requiring inspections for rented houses also seems a bit of an overreach - especially if they aren't stating exactly what they will be inspecting for, or what standard/criteria must be met in order to pass said inspection.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: More of a "statement" money grab than an actual one...

Jun 14, 2016, 3:16 PM

I agree. I'm in city limits but about 3 miles to DV, so the thought has never crossed my mind, not to mention my grass is too nice for parking on it.

But i've considered renting our basement out, when we finish it in the next few years. It will essentially be a stand-alone apartment. However, how they hell would they enforce me to get a license and inspect my HOME. Gonna troll tigernet for house renting ads? Drive by the neighborhoods and stop by houses with too many cars in the driveway? Oh sorry, these are my new friends from tigernet, staying here for free. No license needed. with all the crap going on in this town, and all the construction, and the student population explosion (plans to increase to 30K students within 10y), and they ware worried about maybe 100 homes renting parking or rooms? give me a break.

Re: FB Update: Clemson approves changes to game day parking

Jun 14, 2016, 4:49 PM

This is a money grab. Now these homeowners or property owners will have to be inspected at a cost, get a permit at a cost, next will regulate the price they can charge and get sales tax off of it

Re: Headline should be CITY OF Clemson approves changes

Jun 14, 2016, 10:15 PM

A business license is $50 or $55 dollars for the bottom income bracket, which is around $2000. This is not that big of a deal and will be good for the little city of Clemson. We can all she'll out hundreds or thousands for tickets and lot passes, but $50 is a money grab? Come on yall. I'm happy to help out the city of Clemson.

Money grab for sure. When The Tigers sucked none of this was a problem. More people making money on the backs of the athletes. By the way, coaches make too much money.
