This is why I’m not a huge basketball fan

Mar 30, 2019, 9:36 PM

The referees dictate the result of the game too much. Also they call too many fouls and seems like every other possession there is a controversial call

Totally agree. And it seems worse this year than any I remember. It’s like some calls get called and the others aren’t enforced. Zero consistency.

Agree - can’t watch it any more.***

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

They've made the rules such that every call is subjective

Mar 30, 2019, 10:31 PM

allowing the refs to decide the game (as you said). An offensive player lowers his shoulder and drive into the defender again and again to get closer to the basket and shoot. Sometimes they call a fall on him (when it's not someone like Zion), sometimes they don't (when it's someone like Zion).

My son asked my how they decide blocking vs charge. I told him it's just random and when he chuckled I told him no, I'm serious. And how often do you see a defender standing perfectly still with their arms up and they get called for a foul? Also the fact that teams commit penalties to potentially gain an advantage--is that possible in any other sport?

Good example was Zion vs Tacko. Zion definitely charged at end of the game and yet got a blocking call on Tacko. I was pulling for Duke but it was clear Tacko wasn’t moving. The calls are always a toss up. Hard to trust that process.

All interesting stuff. Personally, I'm not a Basketball fan because it's a very dull and boring sport.

Maybe you’re confused by the sport based on the team CU puts out. It’s really a great sport when played at a high level.

Clemson basketball is. This March Madness has been extremely exciting and entertaining. The quality is at an entirely different level. Thr play is amazing. The fans are going nuts. The players are as passionate as it gets. Lots of players crying after losses. It doesn't get more passionate than March Madness.

I hear you, but the games were amazing yesterday.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the other huge problem in the sport is the 3-pt line

Mar 31, 2019, 9:00 AM

it should be moved way back, probably to almost mid-court. The 3-pointer's value is too much for how close it is - it shouldn't be worth 50% more than a regular basket.

It's to the point that it's almost coaching stupidity to NOT take a 3-pointer every time down court. It's worth so much more, plus if you miss, the odds of getting a rebound increase because of the high-velocity bounces off the rim.

Plus watching guys throw up 30-footers over and over is not very compelling TV. It was designed to be used 4 or 5 times a game. I don't think the innovators imagined teams each throwing up 30 or 40 a game.
