This is the type of thing that irritates me sometimes with

Sep 18, 2014, 10:00 AM

Dabo's stubborness. He's a great coach and has done marvelous things for this program but can we not look past the "stick to your guns mentality" when some things are just common sense??

On Deferring:

"Nope, we're going to play Florida St. That's who we're going to go play. Not Jameis Winston. If we try to beat one player we are in for a long night. We have to win as a team and we have to defeat their team."

1. We are trying to beat a very loud and motivated 80k people.
2. We are trying to beat a TEAM that will be very motivated and fired up when Winston walks on the field.
3. Winston is their best player, limit his snaps and take advantage of the opportunity we have.
4. We are trying to beat a young inexperienced QB. Why not send Vic and Grady to rattle his cage right after the opening whistle. Don't let him have a chance to calm down on the side line with the flow of the first series.

Just because we always have done something a certain way does not mean we need to always do it that way!!!!

What, you don't want the offense playing first on the road in front of a hostile crowd....thereby potentially giving the Heisman Winner an extra possession in the 2nd half?

Coot. The game's not going to be close enough to matter.

At least he admits we are playing FSU and not a nameless faceless opponent. So there's that going for us.

What if we go down and score and put a team playing

Sep 18, 2014, 10:04 AM

their backup QB down 7 out of the gate?

What if we defer and their backup QB leads them to a 7-0 lead... talk about momentum.

This is ridiculous and proves that some just want to spout their opinions as "the only way and everyone else is stoopid"

But with the way that we've given games away in the 2nd half against our best opponents over the past few years, I don't think it's going to really matter in the long run whether FSU was down by 7 to start the game or not.

I say limit the best player's snaps as much as you can...all the while enjoying the benefits of not having your offense getting the first of the crowd treatment.

I'd much rather score to open the 2nd half if I had to choose.

Yeah, and what if we fumble the opening snap and look like a bunch of monkeys screwing a football the rest of the game?

What I've said makes a hell of a lot more sense.

And what if Winston comes out the second half and drives for a TD and they grab momentum. IT goes both ways!

Our best chances is to set the tone on Defense first, rattle the young qb and take a lead in the first half as well as get the ball to start the second!

I understand your logic York but I disagree because of the fact that great coaches exploit weaknesses and sieze opportunities. We have a legitimate shot to keep the Heisman trophy winner on the sideline and off the field. I would be willing to risk their backup scoring on our defense vs jameis getting 25 mins instead of 30. They all get their confidence from Winston and with him out or on the sidelines, we have the upper hand. It would be a poor coaching decision to waste any chance to get an edge, IMO.

Problem is, my Friend, there are a large number of folks

Sep 18, 2014, 10:08 AM

who'd disagree with you.

That's based upon their firm belief in trying to take control of the game from the get-go by putting up points first and shutting up the crowd to a degree.

It has something to do with motivation...that is, keeping your entire team fired up with the defense coming on-field after our initial score...and laying waste to their offense. Attack, attack, attack would be their words.

In fact that philosophy has been my own for 50 years. I like to strike the first blow, while further energizing our men and our fans. And I was on the sideline enough at Clemson to know how darn effective that can be.

In general I agree with you. In normal game circumstances I agree with you.

But that's the point. We are faced with different circumstances and different opportunities.

Sometimes gameplans need to change according to the opportunites you're faced with.

We have an opportunity to make FSU QB look like Tajh Boyd did against them last year!

Of course, you're correct. However, I still prefer the

double whammy possibility of our scoring first, then watching our defense shred their offense to pieces.

If I'm confident enough in our men, then I'll take the gamble all day, any day, against any foe to attempt that double whammy.

Simply put, I will always support trying to gain the higher ground immediately. Attack! Attack! Attack!

What do you want him to say, yes we are going to milk this for all it's worth. We are scared of a fsu team with JW under center and want to maximize time without him. I also want to tell Jimbo and co exactly what I want out of the coin toss. While I'm at it, here are the changes we are making for the D in the first half and here are the 2nd half time adjustments we plan on making.

How about just:

"We are weighing the options accordingly and will do what gives the best advantage in this game."

What's so hard about that??

Instead he basically told Jimbob the we're taking the ball anyway because that's what we do.

Re: He's answering questions, not making statements

Sep 18, 2014, 11:00 AM

There's nothing hard about telling the truth here, but the question is why?

Why do you tell your opponent more than he needs to know? So CU@TFL will know?

Jimbo already knows we like to take the ball. That's not new info.

Imo the only correct way to answer the question is to say that we aren't changing a thing. That's all I'm saying. I do understand as a fan that's not sexy or fun to hear.

Sep 18, 2014, 11:07 AM [ in reply to Re: He's answering questions, not making statements ]

That's exactly the way he answered it. Go back and watch the video. He was asked if the suspension would change the way he plans for the second half kick off and maybe delay getting him out on the field. Dabo answered no. In other words, (imo) he said it won't change anything. David Hood said he asked about deferring and Dabo didn't answer him. "So, in effect he didn't answer my question." He didn't say one way or another.

The question was asked - "Would it change the way you would look at the second half kickoff..."

IMO ... His response is basically saying No, it won't change the way I look at it. Not No, we won't defer. Like DH said in another post, he didn't answer the question.

Check the 3 minute mark of the second video.

No he was flat out asked if he would defer.

David Hood:
"I actually asked him last night if he would change the way he looks at the kickoff and would defer on the kickoff to keep Jameis off the field."

You're right, he was asked if he would change the way he looks at the kick off and maybe delay him getting back out on the field. I really feel like Dabo's response was - no, it won't change the way we look at it. So he didn't say one way or another. David Hood also said, Dabo didn't answer the question. I agree.
