Gotta love how the second shot

May 5, 2021, 6:52 AM

is worse than when I had the virus. If I were single and healthy, no way I would get vaccinated. I only did this for my wife and kids. No way if I lived alone I would get the shots.

You are not alone in saying the after effects of the second shot suck. It has kicked my butt for nearly a week. Flu like symptoms sore neck, sore muscles and zero energy. Not been pleasant at all. But at least we should be immunized - at least for a while.

Pfizer shot by the way.

You can still get the virus and pass the virus with the vaccine, so why get the vaccine?

This is all a lie! BTW I went and got vaccinated. "They" have no idea what's going on. But I did what was recommended. Well, not really. I only did it for others. But others don't need it because they didn't get it from me. Sad, sad, I know people that have died from this. BUT IT'S ONLY LIKE A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF PEOPLE. Being positive wasn't all that bad. parodying, but I do think its silly how we are all treating this like we did back in March of last year. The mask thing is just laughable, wear it to your seat, sit there in the recirculated room for hours and then put it back on to leave. Plus if you are not with someone for more than 15 minutes, supposedly you cannot transmit, so how is me walking out of the restaurant a health hazard?

Everything is so arbitrary that its maddening.

Get the vaccine, but you can still get it and pass it.
STAY HOME AND QUARANTINE or you will kill grandma. Comingle positive elderly with negative, 40% of deaths come from nursing homes. But that is why we locked down.

Well, at least we know the China vaccine is

May 5, 2021, 8:41 AM [ in reply to The benefit is that if people quit getting infected, the ]

crap. Between Chile, Brazil, Paraguay, and now the Sea Shells, yeah, it's crap. China is just now doing human trials on their first mRNA vaccine. Can't believe they haven't stolen that long ago.

But there's evidence in India that the Astra Zeneca vaccine is not (as) effective. They're seeing medical staff getting covid who had the Astra Zeneca vaccine. Many staff in one hospital got sick. The good news though, is they all had mild cases, meaning the vaccine at least helped keep illnesses mild.

At this point it's mRNA or bust basically. But just know all vaccines are not equal.

And then there's the Seychelles. Tiny islands in the Indian Ocean with 100,000 people. Most "vaccinated" country on Earth, to date. They had no mRNA vaccines, but a mix of Astra Zeneca from India (gift) and the Chinese crap (gift). Between those two, well....they now have the worst outbreak on Earth, relatively speaking anyway. It would be equivalent to the US having 3,200,000 people currently sick with covid and another 1,600,000 people daily testing positive. Hopefully the vaccines keep mortality/severity low. The ones they had sure are not stopping the spread. Their hospitals are now full and they're shutting down (again) after several months of welcoming tourists from all over the world. No real choice for them at this point.

But overall, the more we can do to slow transmission (vaccines and masks), the less it will transmit, and the less chance it mutates more.

None of the vaccines or mask wearing or distancing are perfect - but they all help and they all add up.

May 5, 2021, 10:16 AM [ in reply to If true, and I hope it is... Why are we still wearing masks ]

if we were going to take it off the minute we sat down?

That rule was dumb 9at least here) because no one was willing to do what it would truly take to make mask wearing worth while - wearing it any time that you weren't actively eating or drinking. But no one really does that because it's annoying, so the mask mandate in restaurants (around here anyway) is pointless. the mandate, not the masks.

I think it was/is reasonable balance between what is....

May 5, 2021, 10:40 AM

feasible and odds of transmission.

I get your sentiment.

But, the requirement makes some sense to me. Before you are seated at your table, you could be standing in a crowd waiting for a table or interacting with a lot more people.

Once you're at your table, you should be somewhat separated and dealing with a limited number of people (waitress, etc...). And it's not reasonable to try to enforce wearing a mask between bites or sips. So it's a reasonable balance of the odds and feasibility.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The requirement as written made sense. the execution

May 5, 2021, 10:56 AM

did not. I guess in the many instances that I've picked up food, I've seen packed restaurants with people sitting and talking with no masks. like, they take it off as soon as they sit down and put it on when they passing the hostess stand.

I have said it many times though...I'm not high on hanging in poorly ventilated areas with lots of heavy breathers/loud talkers (restaurants, Orangetheory:( ). Especially when the cases were high.

And that was a choice I made. Now, I'm a little more at ease after having gotten the vaccine and I actually prefer eating outside, so...it's all good.

Of course you see very little benefit,

May 5, 2021, 9:11 AM [ in reply to I see very little benefit ]

because you're looking at benefit solely as a function applicable to yourself. The benefit of you getting vaccinated may actually manifest for somebody else--could be a family member or friend, could be somebody you've never met. You being vaccinated potentially prevents the spread of a virus from you to another person, who could be less fortunate than you and experience things far worse than a 48 hour cold, up to and including death.

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but your attitude is pretty terrible and is one of the main factors contributing to the continued spread of this stupid virus. Yeah, you got vaxxed, but quite literally millions of others with your same attitude are like "nah, I don't need to, I don't really see the benefit to me."

previous administration.

They could have really tried to unite the country with a sense of purpose and civic duty. Instead, they not only allowed, but actively promoted, the issue such that it became deeply political. As if service, duty, country above self, and sacrifice were somehow instantly a "liberal" idea as it pertains to this single issue.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Disagree. Getting vaccinated protects yourself, not others.

May 5, 2021, 11:37 AM [ in reply to Of course you see very little benefit, ]

Wearing masks protects others.

We know that being vaccinated protects you from the severe effects of the virus. I still haven't seen anything yet that proves it protects other people.

But the thing is, everyone who is at any risk whatsoever to Covid has either had the vaccine, has the antibodies, has already died, or does not care and is just assuming the risk.

Go ahead and pat yourself on the back, but getting vaccinated is to protect yourself, first and foremost.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nope....

May 5, 2021, 11:51 AM

it's not conclusive yet, but early data is showing vaccine reduced the chance of spread. If you have been infected, the data shows pretty conclusively that the time period in which one could spread is greatly reduced.

AND the more ppl that are vaccinated, the lower the chance of developing variants.

I think it's simply false to say that getting vaccinated doesn't protects others.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

May 5, 2021, 11:58 AM

if the kids have to stay home cause they got COVID. That’s about as simple as it gets. It’s definitely not for anyone else. If you are scared, then get vaccinated. If scared and not wanting to get vaccinated, stay home till the rage is over. If you don’t want to be vaccinated, I don’t really care......see you at the Pub on Friday.

It’s not really all that hard to understand.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yup. Just because I chose to get vaxed for whatever reason,

May 5, 2021, 12:09 PM

I could not in good faith encourage someone else to get an unapproved vaccine. That's a decision that they are gonna need to make for themselves.

I already know of someone who lost a child at 18 weeks and the OBGYN blamed it on the JnJ. Timeline of growth was perfect.

I think that's rare and we also know that getting Covid while pregnant increases chance of preterm labor. So you just have to make the best decision for yourself.

I just hate the constant pushing of something that we know so little about. Especially on little kids with developing immune systems when the risk of Covid issues is basically nothing.

For Emergency Use approval, manufacturing and testing happen at the same time. I think there is a big misconception that somehow the COVID vaccines didn't go through thorough testing yet. That is not true.

Took a Tylenol, laid on couch for a couple hours and watched TV, completely immobile.
At 10am, realized I felt much, much better. Got up and I was 100% fine, like a snap of the fingers. 24 hours later. Strangest sensation I've had in awhile.

Went to afternoon baseball game, sat in hot sun all day. Just fine.

I'm actually ready to get a third shot , just for the dream clarity affects. I feel slightly addicted now. It must be similar to people who take LSD or smoke pot, the freaky visions, hallucinations and such. I weirdly feel like I want more of it.

Moderna has never had an FDA approved product in the history of their company. Several countries, including the US and Canada have halted giving out the J&J vaccine over blood clot concerns.

Yet, in spite of all that, people act like you're a lunatic for being hesitant. Covid has become a religion.

I was like you but yesterday morning decided to get the J&J on a whim. I have a lot of flying coming up so maybe that was mindfarking with me, I dunno.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I get that, and I may end up having to get it for work

May 5, 2021, 10:38 AM

eventually. Which is whatever I guess, but the people chomping at the bit for their kids to get it are fuggin nuts IMO.

I've been called a lot worse than selfish, so people can get fukt with that nonsense as far as I'm concerned.

they have a worse disease than COVID will ever be.

Plus there is no cure, and 0% survival rate, for what they have.

Judgement of others is a big no-no per the Good Book, yet it runs unchecked in today's society. Sad.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I suspect some of the visceral reaction some people have

May 5, 2021, 11:01 AM

towards those who are not rushing out to get it is rooted in doubting whether they themselves did the right thing. You saw the same thing when people started refusing to stay home. That's a deep psychological rabbit hole though.

I think it's reasonable to wait until full approval (which

May 5, 2021, 10:40 AM [ in reply to I like how I'm some sort of anti science monster for wanting ]

should be soon). I reserve the 'anti science monster' term for those that feel like the government is installing tracking devices :)

I, for one, feel like I'll be in that boat when making the decision for my kid...Like, it's one thing when I'm making the decision for myself. but it's another for my 6 yo.

It's going to be interesting for schools, do they require

May 5, 2021, 10:55 AM

the vaccine? Could they? I imagine the push back would be huge. Personally, I'll need to see years of long term results in children/teens before I consider it for my son.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They require other vaccines.

with "years of long term results in children/teens"

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I mean, has anyone researched those vaccines?

May 5, 2021, 11:02 AM

When were they first required? How much long term data was in before being required? Did you make your decision to home school or not based on that?

Nope.

But hey, we now live in an internet conspiracy world. Fact of the matter is, people are getting the vaccine but then saying they don't trust it on the internet. Society is ###### up like that.

Look no further than the OP on this.

I would expect Lakebum has is own criteria for his kid and that's cool and all. Just make sure to thoroughly research and apply it to polio, hep A, hep B, MMR, etc. as well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Funny you mention polio, you should check out how the first

May 5, 2021, 11:08 AM

vaccine for that went. All of those vaccines you mention have been around for decades, I think I'm applying my vaccination standards pretty universally.

Fair enough, and good example.

May 5, 2021, 11:15 AM

Tell me then, what metrics will YOU be using when determining if a given vaccine is safe?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Full FDA approval and multiple years of other people/peoples

May 5, 2021, 11:22 AM

children getting it with little to no adverse effects.

Please sweet lord bless me with reading lakebum home school jounge posts at some point. I BEG YOU.

Schools don't require the flu vaccine. Covid is less severe

May 5, 2021, 11:44 AM

than the flu to kids.

Schools will absolutely not require covid vaccine to children in the foreseeable future.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

As do you. And yes, I might. Granted, my son is still

May 5, 2021, 12:08 PM [ in reply to Cool. You seem to feel strongly about this. ]

several years off from that so there's still time to meet my personal requirements. Frankly, I tend to think this vaccine isn't the savior that everyone wants it to be, and once that plays out the desire to make it a requirement will fizzle out.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Once it's FDA approved, they can require it and likely will

May 5, 2021, 10:59 AM [ in reply to They require other vaccines. ]

for the little - unless we've gotten it 'under control' by then. If we get the cases down to small seasonal outbreaks, then i would imagine it's be strongly encouraged, like the flu vaccine it.

trust me. i'm a doctor. heh.

I don't think that line of thinking is "anti-science"....

May 5, 2021, 10:46 AM [ in reply to I like how I'm some sort of anti science monster for wanting ]

the full approval will come soon and I can respect that opinion.

I cannot respect the opinion of not getting it because one thinks it's a government ploy or that they "don't believe in covid" (which I've heard a lot of people say and I don't even understand what it means), etc...

For me, I looked at the requirement for emergency/conditional approval and was convinced that was more than sufficient. By the time I had my chance a few weeks ago, the data was overwhelming that the risks were extremely small and much less than many other things I do.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I understand that you are struggling with being a beta. Living in in-laws grandmas house has to be tough on the ego. Plus having to lay in ICU for a couple weeks while your wife takes care of kids because of your bad decisions.....that is tough and I see why you are angry.

as having the virus.

1st shot - flu like symptoms for a day
2nd shot - flu like symptoms for a day
Actually having COVID - sick as a dog for 2 weeks, with lingering effects for weeks
