Jounge Opinion Solicitation ITT

May 4, 2021, 11:15 AM

Greenr has a young child who is in Kindergarten. He went to a birthday party this weekend at a friend's house. (Wife of Greenr took him so no idea how many other MILFs were there). Anyways, I asked him if his friend, L, was there. My boy said he wanted to go, but he couldn't because he had a Golf Tournament.

So here is the scenario:

Kid just turned 6 last week or so, been doing SC Junior Golf for 6 months maybe. Dad has created him an instagram account to follow his golf progress and Dad converted his own instagram account to an account to promote his 6 year old son's golf game. Every weekend he is traveling to play golf, at 6 years old. Every Halloween costume is a golfer, every "What do you want to be when you grow up" day is a golfer, Master's Week was a series of instagram posts with Dad and Son wearing multiple matching Master's Polos talking about BEST WEEK EVER. Dad went to a 2-year school on a golf scholarship, nothing past that other than playing for fun, no professional status, never sniffed the tour, maybe won a tournament once or something.

Anyways, I know some of you guys are big golfers and I know some of you are big into youth sports, but in my opinion, which doesn't count for shit in this scenario, this is a little over the top.
It reminds me of the Tiger Woods / Earl Woods skit (on SNL maybe) where he talked about his dad duct taping a golf club to his hands. I'm all for letting your kid pursue his dreams, but at 6 I think my kid just dreams of never wearing clothes so we cannot pursue that right now.

Thanks for listening to my TED talk.

What's your question good sir?

Is that a bad thing?

we aren't friends. Acquaintances at best. He did try to sell me insurance once.

I meant to cover that in the TED Talk, maybe I should donate so I can edit.

Please tell me he tried to sell you whole life insurance.***

It didn't progress any farther than "Hey Greenr, you need

life insurance? If so, give me a call" via facebook messenger. I declined.

see it ALL THE TIME.

Dad who would have won the state championship if only the coach put him on the mound now lives vicariously through his son.

What usually ends up happening is the kid gets burned out before college.

Neighbor I had growing up had a son that was getting looks from USC and Clemson baseball as a sophomore in HS. Switched him to a private "baseball academy" school, $3000 tournaments all over the country including Alaska.

Senior year comes, kid doesn't want to play baseball anymore. Burned out. Now I think the kid is a welder somewhere driving a squatted tahoe.

I got burned out playing baseball by Senior Year and I

May 4, 2021, 11:21 AM

didn't even play Fall Ball or Travel Ball. High School and Summer Leagues was enough to make me start to hate it. I have no clue how these guys can play year round. I loved baseball, but EFF that noise.

Also, I wasn't THAT good, so maybe that was part of the issue.

junior in high school. Junior year in high school I was ready to quit. Parent's wouldn't let me quit until the end of the season though. Told the coaches after the last game I wouldn't be back next year.

We literally had practice 7 days a week. Monday-Friday after school until about 7 pm. Saturday we would start practice at 9 am, practice until lunch. Go eat lunch. Come back and work on the field until 5. Sunday was batting practice from 1pm to 4 pm.

You're asking for a burnout.

Sure Earl Woods types are abusive a-holes, but without them

we don't have Tigers. My kids have my genes though and therefore will never be elite at anything athletically.

Sports at the Y will suffice.

My 8 yo grandson is playing in a golf league

May 4, 2021, 11:21 AM

But Dad is just making it fun, no parental pressure.
There are other kids in the league that are super serious with #### parents....

If you start with the 150 guys in the entire US who play

May 4, 2021, 11:23 AM

Tour golf and track backwards, you find a lot of them being driven around to play at age 5. If you start with millions of people who are always needing to prove themselves, and track backward, you find the same thing in some form. It doesn't work.

But, she ended up getting a golf scholly to Mercer so proved me wrong.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If the kid loves it, then I would foster it, but...

May 4, 2021, 11:26 AM

seems very strange to travel to play in a junior tournament at 6.

I'm pretty sure even if the kid loved golf, he'd have just as much fun cruising the local country club in the golf cart while dad pounds back a few beers.
