Tommy Bowden

Sep 21, 2017, 2:35 PM

I always liked coach Bowden and thought he did a lot for Clemson and was a big reason Dabo is here. However, he does seem to be reluctant to give too much praise to Dabo and Clemson in my view. I don't mean he is outright rude but he seems a little jealous in my opinion or something. I'm not sure if that's the right way to describe it.

I mean he does say nice things but the praise seems off to me. Anyone else get that vibe or am I just reading it wrong?

Maybe he doesn't want to appear to be a homer

since he's media now.

Maybe so. You might be right.

To Tommy, Clemson was simply a job...

Sep 21, 2017, 2:40 PM

He was never going to be embraced by the community or the fans as a Clemson man and frankly, he didn't want to be. A lot of that had to do with his condescending and aloof personality

IMHO, you're sort of correct.

Sep 21, 2017, 2:41 PM

I think current-day Tommy thinks he had a lot more to do with our current success than most of us think, and he comes off as a little bitter that he's not a minor legend around these parts.

I knew people who worked at Clemson during that time

(not in the athletic dept) who had interactions with TB that would support the "condescending and aloof" idea. Actually, that would be a nice way of describing it.

I have found it odd that he hasnt gotten another chance to coach again. I mean he's not great, however there are some real losers out there coaching today. I wonder if ole miss may look at him after the season

3. Hired DABO

Re: Tommy Bowden

Sep 21, 2017, 3:24 PM

Ive got nothing against Bowden. As a fan there was a lot of frustration, but he wasnt a jerk - Spurrier was a jerk. Was he aloof? Maybe, a bit. He always seemed pretty uptight to me.

If you are old enough, recall where the program was when he came. Recall the changes in offense, a defense which began to be taken seriously. Yes, we lost some we never should have, but under him we beat FSU for the first time since they joined the conference. We beat Tennessee and we had other great games (63-17)...

He was never going to be a great coach, we see this now. But when he was hired, he was a breath of fresh air. He improved our facilities, he improved our recruiting, he improved play on the field. In many measures the guy was really pretty successful. I dont hate him for being something he is not. And while he was not a great coach, he was pretty good. USuC would love to have what he did for us right now.

As for promoting Clemson, if his feelings are hurt, I understand. Also, he is in the media now and has to take care to not seem too favorable towards us. There are so many among us who seem to hate Bowden, Steele and others who are no longer coaches here, but did, in fact, improve the program during their tenure.

Sep 22, 2017, 12:09 AM [ in reply to Re: Tommy Bowden ]

Coach Bowden for all of his losses to mediocre teams, was all Clemson. He won a lot of big games. He had coots number. His daughter is a Clemson grad. Bowden should be commended for relentlessly calling for the AD and Clemson BOT to upgrade facilities. He went way, way down and hired Dabo. For his time, he was what Clemson needed.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree with everything, except the odd Kevin Steele reference...

Sep 22, 2017, 12:14 AM [ in reply to Re: Tommy Bowden ]

Sorry but the only credit you can give him is that he coached so poorly in the Orange Bowl that it pretty much guaranteed he was gone, which paved the way for Venables. Tommy at least did some building. Steele just coached the worst defenses in the history of Clemson football

Re: Tommy Bowden

Sep 21, 2017, 6:20 PM

I think Dabo has made TBs tenure here look pretty bad. Think about it this way: if the guy that replaced you in your job took the position to another level, it might make you a little bitter, too. But that's on TB. I think he has realized the things he could have done better, instead of rationalizing it away (i.e. Clemson has a ceiling of 8-9 wins). TB was coach during my years there, and he frustrated the he** out of me. But he did bring in Dabo.

Not a big Bowden fan but the OP on this thread is reaching and I don't think he even knows that he's talking about because he can't articulate what he's trying to say. Tommy is respectful of Clemson and the job Dabo is doing. He's in the media, so he has to be somewhat unbiased, too.

Tommy Bowden is the polar opposite of Dabo Swinney..

Bowden has a sense of entitlement and arrogance as far as college football goes because of his family name..

He is to cfb what Kyle Petty was to NASCAR..

Dabo Swinney has fought and scrapped for everything he has.. and that's why he had the heart and strength to fight his way to the top..

Bowden probably would never admit it but he looked at Clemson as beneath Daddy's FSU.. and figured our fan base expected too much

I don't know about this unbiased media statement. Have you ever listened to booger, finebomb, and some of the other sec homers? Bowden could pump up FSU, Clemson, and the rest of the ACC for all of his airtime and not equal what the other hosts get away with. Bowden has many reasons to be an ACC homer. Just saying.

He also references his own inability to get it done. Which should come off as humble, and perhaps I'm jaded. But I've always felt like it was disingenuous when he says stuff like that.

Good man, appreciate his contributions to Clemson and I'm sure he appreciates Clemson's contributions to his bank account many years after his departure.

That's all over now, and I'd be happy to not hear from him again. No offense. Just don't care to have his input on the program in any way. Ever again.

I sold my house in Chas last year, and did well.. it will pay for my daughter's college and still leave something in savings. You'd think I'd be ecstatic.
Instead, in all conversations about it at work here in CA, I can recognize how great that is but feel a little sick in my stomach to no longer have something I loved and to be far away from it.

Tommy made bank after being fired, but I believe he loved Clemson and wanted the program to do well. But loke me with my house, he's on the outsode and far away from it and that is reflected in his interviews.

Re: Tommy Bowden

Sep 21, 2017, 10:19 PM

I appreciate what TB did for us, but he took us as far as he thought we could go. He never believed Clemson was capable of being the premiere program of the ACC much less winning a national championship. His view of success for our program was to finish second in our division. I do agree with some of the other posters...he acted as if he was doing us a favor by being here.

I think the last 5 years has shown him he did not have the right mindset while he was here. Dabo had to beg him to go after some NAME recruits, cause TB didn't think we stood a chance. He couldn't sell Clemson like Dabo does because Tommy never bought all in to Clemson himself.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree...he tends to give underhanded praise....

Sep 21, 2017, 10:43 PM

...almost like he's holding back the praise because he can't figure out how to work himself into the deal.

Anyhow, he set us back on the right path....good wholesome clean image for the university avoiding the uglies of places like Baylor, Penn St., etc. Most of us just wish he was gone after 7 years. But it all worked out in the end. He just needs to flat out just admit Dabo is more than an excellent CEO, but a great mentor, great coach, great motivator and the man with da plan!

If anything, it was CTB who was a good CEO but not a great coach. Too conservative and settled too often. Never believed in Clemson as a contender for elite class. I like the man, but as far as I'm concerned he can take all his Clemson money and ride off into the sunset to enjoy life rather than to spend anymore time making commentary about Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Tommy Bowden

Sep 22, 2017, 4:04 AM

Tommy Bowden just was not the quality of Coach Dabo or his father Bobby was. I'm sure he did his best, but his best just was not as effective, and his personality did not make recruits want to come to Clemson, which is one of Dabo's greatest assets! The way Dabo once flew off at the reporter who used the Clemson name as an adjective probably convinced some recruits to come to Clemson. Dabo's dancing and having a good time after wins likely helps in both motivation and recruiting. The play calling is in my opinion left mostly up to the 2 OC's and Brent Venables, as it should be. You see the fun the players have with Dabo as HC and you want to be a part of that culture. The smartest thing Clemson has ever done is to let Dabo be Dabo! The best thing Tommy Bowden ever did was hiring Dabo, for which all Clemson fans should be eternally grateful...best hiring decision ever!!!!

Re: Tommy Bowden

bricks Tommy had haphazardly laying around, and built a helluva house out of them. Every comment he makes is tinged with jealousy in that regard. True, he recommended Dabo on his way out, but in retrospect, he never in 4 million years thought Dabo would succeed, especially not to the degree he has. Couple that with the fact that Tommy has never had a sniff of another head coaching job, and you get the snide comments he makes. If you get the feeling I have no love for Tommy Bowden, you would be absolutely correct. He overstayed his welcome by about 4 years at least.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: You would be correct

Sep 22, 2017, 11:22 AM

Listening to him, any compliment towards Clemson is back-handed. Any criticism he makes (most recently, "consistency") is somehow linked to his own inabilities achieving success as a HC. I truly believe he never thought Dabo would achieve the success that he has. I firmly believe he saw Dabo as an interim HC---not his successor at Clemson.

Yes, he certainly did help with the WEZ project....but I do not think he was someone who laid the foundation for Dabo. I believe Dabo is the one who picked up the scattered remains of a program and built a dynasty.

And for that, I think it's an insult to Dabo (and Danny) to say that Bowden built something.
