This is a play-in game for both teams. I hope the Tigers treat it as such

I don't see the losing team getting in. The ACC is only ranked 4th in the NET, and as much as I think those rankings are bs, the bottom line is that is the new metric. And, if you look at it objectively, the 4th best conference isn't deserving of being a 9 bid league.

If they play like they did in the 2nd half of the Cuse game

they'll be fine.

If they play like they did in the first half of that same game...well...let's just hope that doesn't happen.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

I don't necessarily believe that's the case

as almost no one knows how the Committee will differ as compared to past seasons. The Committee completely changed its metrics this year, moving from the RPI to the Net Ranking and to a Quadrant system. The move from the RPI to the Net ranking means a much larger emphasis has been placed on advanced metrics than in the past, as the Net is more of a blend of results and advanced metrics. Clemson's RPI is 50, which is quite poor, but they fare much better with the new Net Ranking where they are currently rank 36th, which is solid for an at-large candidate. Clemson's kenpom and sagarin rating both sits at 28th, which shows why we're much better in the new Net Ranking than the old RPI.

The problem though is that Clemson has an extremely poor, 1-9 record in Quadrant 1 games, which is defined as as home games against teams ranked 1-30, neutral games against teams ranked 1-50, or road games against teams ranked 1-75. The 1-9 record is the worst among "bubble teams", but with it being the first year of the new evaluation system, no one really knows how much that will factor into Clemson's fate. The good news is that today's game against NC State would also count as a Quadrant 1 game as its a neutral game against #32 NC State.

I think Bracket Matrix does a good job of showing where people think Clemson currently stands.

As you can see, Clemson is currently in the tournament in 110 out of 143 of the brackets, which is actually more than NC State (98 out of 143). Clemson is actually solidly in the field in some of those brackets though as an 8, 9, or 10 seed in more than you'd expect.

Again no one really knows how the new selection process will pan out, but if those predicting Clemson to be an 8-10 seed are correct, then this isn't necessarily a must-win game. Alternatively, we could actually be out of the tournament as we speak and even a win against NC State could be less than is needed to make the tournament due to our terrible Quadrant 1 record.
We also don't know how the other conference tournaments will turn out, which is also a big factor.

I hear ya, but come on...are you really putting weight into those brackets with us as an 8,9,10***

It all depends on how important Net Ranking actually is. With a Net Ranking of 36, and our very good advanced metric ratings, that's right in the 9 or 10 range. With the Committee's tendency to always move down mid-majors a little more than they should, I can see why someone would think 9 or 10 could happen.

With that said, if I were on the committee, I would personally have a really hard time getting past our 1-9 record in Quadrant 1 games.
