Utah OC Andy Ludwig was Marcus Freeman's choice to replace Tommy Rees, but ND higher-ups balked at paying at least $2 million to buy out his contract. This comes after Ludwig was flown into South Bend for an interview and reportedly offered the job.

Rules have changed since then. Now you can’t transfer twice without sitting out a year. But I’m not sure how that applies to a situation where you re-portal before the season starts.
