Monday night update: McCloud looking good, quarterback battle shaping up

The first four practices of the spring are in the books, and all eyes are on Clemson’s quarterback situation where Kelly Bryant, Tucker Israel, Zerrick Cooper and Hunter Johnson are all vying for a starting spot. Four practices in and Bryant is still the leader. Full Story »

hope he legit earns it and isnt just gifted the starting spot just because he has been on the team the longest.

Maybe if Brandon Streeter had been on the staff all year, Cole would have been the QB he was against Oklhoma the entire season.

Maybe ... who knows?

At any rate, at least we have a dedicated full-time QB coach now while we didn't when Chad Morris was on the staff.

And Clemson doesn't open at Georgia. The Tigers are at home against Kent State. Any one of us can start at qb and Clemson would win. The second week? I'll sit that one out. :)

Part of Cole's struggles, imo, is that he wasn't a good fit for Morris' system and Morris didn't want to adjust to the tool he had. Kelly's a better fit for a read-option than Cole was, and our current OC's seem more willing to adjust. Not saying I personally prefer Kelly, but I trust the process.

Unfortunately, developing KB was last year and we really didn't do that when we had the opportunity to let him throw the ball. Being there rules in Dabos book, but the should move KB to tailback or somewhere else to get him the ball. Just not the trigger guy, imo. As raw as DW4, after he went in against Ga, leave him in until he screwed up!

I don't disagree. My brothers and I have talked numerous times about how we feel KB would be a better athlete at WR or even safety. Just doesn't seem like Dabo is interested in moving him.

Yep, me too because we have a legit chance to go back to the playoffs. We have one heck of a D to waste it with a couple early losses just because we felt kb deserves a chance... you got DW4 talent, you have to play it.

In case you forgot, Cole actually went right down the field and scored a touchdown on the first drive

Was Watson better in the long run? Of course.

Mar 7, 2017, 4:02 PM [ in reply to no he didnt ..watson was ]

Was Cole better in the short term, from the aspects of experience, known ability (see Oklahoma game), and seniority? Yes. Yes, he was. Coaches will rarely if ever just toss the true frosh out there to the wolves especially when you experience and a guy who earned a chance.

think most teams elect to play defense first when they win the coin toss?

Re: You may have a point there. Hey, quick question, do you

Mar 7, 2017, 10:58 AM

I assume everyone knows that when you win a coin toss you can elect to defer?

Most often that's exactly what teams do.

"...teams have increasingly chosen to defer after winning the coin toss, with the percentages climbing to 65 percent this year from 38 percent in 2008.

"Of the 10 games played this postseason, eight teams winning the kickoff have deferred. The two clubs that won the coin toss and chose to receive the opening kickoff -- the Indianapolis Colts against the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs against the Colts -- both lost."

I assume everyone knows that deferring means you give the other team the choice to either kick or receive to start the game. The issue here seems to be a few folks on this site who don't know that if the other team chooses to kick to start the game, then they will kick to start half as well. That's akin to losing a possession. Although it has been done, that's not really a sound strategy.

"Saturday night got off to a weird start for the Texas Longhorns when a slip in managing the coin toss resulted in UCLA getting to receive the football first in both halves. Texas captain Desmond Jackson inexplicably told the ref Texas wanted to kick off to start the game, after UCLA had won the coin flip and deferred to the second half. This resulted in Texas having to kick off to the Bruins at the start of the first and second half...choosing to play defense second rather than the more traditional option of playing defense first."

Soooo, with that said I assume all can agree that when you defer you are essentially forcing the other team to receive the ball. That means you are putting your defense on the field first. In fact, teams with strong defenses often choose to play defense first for that very reason. Has anyone noticed Dabo has always chsoe to receive until this year where he's deferring more? That's to get our defense on the field first. Its a conscious decision. Or should I say "conscience" for IB12?

Anywho, it took all of 0.49 seconds to find 42,000,000 hits...

"A more defensive-minded coach typically will defer,” Billick said.

"It’s always important to get a fast start. We won the coin toss, deferred and elected to play defense first. That didn’t work out as good, but we held them to a field goal. We like our defense out there, and we like to have a good stop."

"Easthampton elected to play defense first."

"BYU won the toss and elected to play defense first"

"it’s advantageous to win the toss, play defense first.."

"On the two road games this year, had we won the toss at Florida or Penn State, we would have played defense first," Saban said

"We chose to defer (the kickoff); wanted our defense to play first."

"Ravens Coach John Harbaugh, whose team plays the Chiefs on Sunday ... deferring the opening coin toss to put his defense on the field first."

"we might see a coach defer and play defense first"

" Marshall has won the toss in all four games and Holliday has elected to defer all four times. That means he prefers to put his stingy defense on the field first.."

Not a darn thing wrong with saying some teams elect to play defense first. Because they do, more often than not.

What is it some of you are having such a difficult time with?

Re: hope bryant isnt a case like cole

Mar 7, 2017, 9:53 AM [ in reply to hope bryant isnt a case like cole ]

I wish that our T-Net group would just let it go about Cole. I personally believe that our two offensive coordinators had shown what type of QB Cole would have been if our offense would have been adjusted to go along with and fit Cole's strengths. He looked like a very good seasoned QB against Oklahoma under the instructions of Tony Elliot, Jeff Scott and QB coach Brandon Streeter. If the Oklahoma game was evidence of what Cole could have been with a season under our present OC's and Streeter, then he would have had a h&ll of a season. And DW4 would of had a season to get his body bigger and stronger the way he was after he came back from the injuries he suffered through, that I believe was mostly bc he wasn't physically ready to be a first year starter at the college level.

IMO, I believe that The Chad learned a very valuable lesson with DW4 that will help him as a HC. That is just bc a QB is loaded with talent and has an excellent FB IQ, that doesn't make them ready to be a first year starting college QB. When DW4 come to Clemson, his body was badly needing more muscle, strength, and more weight, especially with the OL we had to protect him.

Re: hope bryant isnt a case like cole

Mar 7, 2017, 4:32 PM

Not sure I agree about your assessment of DW4's first year. I seem to recall both injuries being freakish- the broken finger against Lewisville and the leg injury against Pauuuuuuuuul Johnson's crew. Neither had little to do with his conditioning or strength.

lol, true. I had a mohawk in high school.

Mar 7, 2017, 9:07 AM

Why? Because I could. With a rapidly expanding bald patch in the back, that wouldn't work so well anymore. Even if I still could, I work at a bank, and that probably wouldn't go over very well.

I always tell my kids to do whatever they want with their hair. Go crazy with it if you want to, because the window of opportunity might be pretty short.
