It's a good 6 minute watch. I was kind of surprised to see that kind of analysis from a non-Clemson or ACC analyst.

Many tnetters do say this and get accused of being a dumper.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I typically see the opposite...

Oct 18, 2022, 8:37 AM

tnetters who say this are called pumpers and the reasons for our "slow start" are identified as NIL, portal related, inexperienced coaches, recruiting drop off, ACC money shortfalls, etc, etc... by dumpers.

If we study Clemson over the past decade, this is the MO every season. Start slow, vanilla playbook, lots of players getting time, etc... then we hit a stride later in the season and start breaking the tendencies we created earlier in the year when it matters most.

Francis Marion® ... My take is some of it is a team building exercise and ego product with Dabo Swinney. He simply does not play the best talent early in the season. Reasons include: 1) The young players do not know the scheme or playbook. 2) Dabo plays the early season (and typically bad teams) like senior day. The upperclassmen get some p.t. and a shot to be leaders to the younger players. And transfer the Dabo brand mentality. 3) Dabo likes to believe he is developing players. He is with most. The frustrating part for fans/alums like me, are the DW4's, TL16's, JR8's and now AW0's playing behind clearly inferior players the 1st few games of each season.

But it works. It's a fair price to pay.

Just saying that in this clip he makes a great point…one that so many Clemson fans seem to forget year after year.

Clemson is a developmental program, and each team develops as the season goes on.

Like all the geniuses who say things like “Alabama would kill us right now” in September-November…
and then we beat them 44-16 when we actually play them in January.
What a concept.

Not at all, Josh Pate is probably the most honest sports guy out there. He does give his opinion but will also admit when he’s wrong. One of the few sports podcast I listen to anymore

Oct 18, 2022, 8:24 AM

That Dabo:
- Only recruits his sons' friends from Daniel High School
- Only hires his buddies that fit the "culture"
- Has coordinators with no previous P5 experience
- Doesn't take advantage of the portal that is apparently full of 5 stars that are all better than what we currently have.

Did I miss anything?

Clearly this guy doesn't listen to the experts on this board.

Re: This guy understands Clemson Football

Oct 18, 2022, 8:36 AM

When I watched this video, it had me thinking about a discussion I had with my wife.

Could we beat Alabama tomorrow?

(Sub any team in for Alabama. Georgia. Tennessee. Ohio State. Michigan.)

I said "no. But we don't play them tomorrow."

In our championship seasons, we weren't good enough to beat Bama mid-season, and my proof is in the fact that we barely survived against A&M (who wasn't as good as Bama). Syracuse (who wasn't as good as Bama) pushed us and we escaped with a four-point win. We eked out an overtime win over NCSU (who wasn't as good as Bama). We did NOT survive against Pitt (not as good as Bama) and the last second field goal.

BUT if you give our staff three weeks in December or ten days in January to prepare for a team, we might not win them all, but we are going to give you an incredible effort, and we do win as much as anyone else. Some might call that "peaking." I wouldn't argue.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

no he doesn't.....

Oct 18, 2022, 8:38 AM

this is the general consensus amongst Clemson fans........he's stating the obvious, no new take here.

he doesn't deny that Clemson wouldn't beat Bama/Ohio St./UGA tomorrow in that clip...........so by Tnet's parameters "he's a coot"

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Then why do so many get so upset

1

Oct 18, 2022, 8:50 AM

when the wins aren’t pretty enough?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

because by most accounts we're an "ELITE" program........

Oct 18, 2022, 9:06 AM

that expects to play to a standard. When we don't play to that standard, REGARDLESS OF OUTCOME, that's what happens. It does not mean those people aren't fans or are coots or are rooting against Clemson, it means there are fans that don't stick their heads in the sand and say "all's good" when all may not be good. A team can win games and still have issues. Prime example is BC, that game was the worst offensive performance by Clemson in a while......including last year, fortunately BC was attrocious and couldn't take advantage of a "D" performance from Clemson's offense. Clemson isn't a finished product and at this point in the schedule there is NO TEAM left that can/should beat Clemson, but if Clemson has expectations of beating an Ohio State, Tennessee, Bama, etc.... there are issues that haven't been "fixed" and we're 7 games into the season................at this point MOST of those issues are on the defensive side of the ball.

when you hear "best is the standard" all the time from Dabo himself, then we expect it all the time.............and there's nothing wrong with that........We're 7 games in and have played .......eh? 1.5-1.75 "complete" games???.........that's not saying we suck, it's just asking questions as to why??........why do we have the defensive issues with the talent we currently have??? is it Goodwin? Is it talent??......it's 1st world elite program problems and most tnet fans don't understand that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Okay. So back to the original point…

1

Oct 18, 2022, 9:16 AM

Those people don’t understand (or they forget) that our teams develop as the season goes along.

Most games are not perfect (sometimes because we play backups during all 4 quarters), and by the end of the season it usually pays off…sometimes in a huge way.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Most seasons that is correct......we haven't had that luxury

Oct 18, 2022, 9:30 AM

this year to play "all these backups" because we start slow MOST of the time..........and no, that's not Dabo being Dabo every game. He did not PLAN to be up 14-3 on GT at half, 13-6 on LaTech at half, or 10-3 on BC at half.............Game 1 to Game 7 has been up and down from an on field performance standpoint. NCstate game was the most "complete" game thus far, typically you build from there, but it's been sporadic since............we played great for a total of 2 quarters vs FSU (2nd&3rd). It's puzzling and it's not what Dabo is "INTENDING" to do like many say..........it's not per the plan.

Many "pumpers" lost their minds when they saw we were only a 4-6 point favorite saying we were gonna beat them by 2-3TDs.............per the numbers over the season the spread was spot on and fans couldn't comprehend that b/c they don't always have a clear/rational perspective of who/what their team is......(ie wearing the orange glasses)...........again, we're heading for 12-0 barring some "WTH" game, but it'd be nice to have a complete game b/c IMO we haven't yet.

Josh Pate

Oct 18, 2022, 8:56 AM

My limited understanding of Josh Pate's background.

1. He started in Columbus, GA. Grew up there. Started producing videos and posting them on youtube. Got some followers. His popularity grew.

2. Eventually got involved with 247. I'm not sure of all the details but he started working with 247 and concentrating on SEC teams.

3. Has become more popular. Now he has a primary sponsor (Academy Sports and outdoors). He's trying to make his channel nationwide. He's in that process. He still concentrates on SEC (hence the apparent bias) but he's spending more time on other teams. (This week he's traveling with his show to Eugene, Oregon.)

My impression of him is he is very good at what he does. He's a football junkie who has a program aimed at football junkies. He primarily covers the SEC, so it seems like he is pro-SEC. But, I've seen him say negative things about SEC teams. I think he is overall fair in his coverage of Clemson.

Re: Josh Pate

Oct 18, 2022, 10:03 AM

Good summary. Josh just calls things as he seems them, with no bias that I am able to detect. The one thing that I would add is that he has addressed the issue of how much time he covers the various teams or conferences. He stated that the amount of coverage is largely based on viewer engagement data from the videos he posts. In other words, if someone wanted to see more coverage of a particular team or conference, then the way to express that to Josh is to view, like, and comment on those specific videos.

It's amazing to me how Clemson fans forget this every season

Oct 18, 2022, 9:10 AM

Dabo's methodology is to start simple, build momentum, and peak at exactly the right time. Happens every season, but we still have people who lose their everloving minds when we beat teams like Troy and LA Tech by less than 40 points.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: This guy understands Clemson Football

Oct 18, 2022, 9:26 AM

I believe Dabo is managing the progress by the quarter, peaking too much in this past week's 3rd quarter, he reeled it back in during the 4th. Masterful!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that's a crock......Dabo did not intentionally kill momentum

Oct 18, 2022, 9:33 AM

and give FSU a glimmer of hope with an onside kick b/c "we were peaking too much".........C'mon now SMH

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: This guy understands Clemson Football

Oct 18, 2022, 9:59 AM

Lots of other school's fans (even OSU fans) often give Clemson credit for "coaching their players up" better than other top programs. I think this is a part of the reason. Dabo and company set goals for each player's development and continue to focus on those goals over the course of the entire season (not just spring and fall practice seasons). I think they focus on this development more and better than some other top programs.

Other top programs focus on recruiting top talent, but don't strive as consistently as we do on further development of that talent. I am not saying that they don't develop talent - they would not be a top ten program if they didn't. But they don't do it as well - and over the course of the entire year the way they we do.

Easpecially once the season starts, I think that they allow themselves to shift their focus onto just fixing problems from week to week where as we do both - fix problems AND continue to follow the plan for player development.

On a tangent to this, Dabo undestands that you can't expect any athlete, especially young kids, to maintain a mental and physical peak for 4 months, so he doesn't. He builds the individuals and the team over the course of the season. It takes a much better team to beat Georgia than it does top beat Georgia Tech.
