All of those negatives and Putin is still going all out for this. He is one of those egomaniacal leaders who want a legacy and place in history, not content with just the present. He is getting older and possibly losing power so he knows this is his last big hurrah.
I am not sure anything will deter him. Hopefully some higher ups within Russian will come to their senses and overthrow him.ñ to stop this.

Another positive I see on the sanctions front is that there just isn't a large number of the monied elite to target. Russia's wealth is so highly concentrated at a very small top that it should be easier to initiate financial pain for those who put Putin there to begin with, and continue to stand by and go along. Honestly, I don't know that Putin will survive the year as Russia's leader.

The best way to build anti-war sentiment in mother Russia is

for the Ukraine to send a constant, unrelenting stream of dead Russian soldiers back to their motherland. Nothing makes a populace ask questions about their Government's actions like a steady stream of dead sons and daughters.
The Russian military will eventually overtake Ukraine - at which point is incumbent for the Ukrainians to resurrect their partisan lineage and bleed these Russians occupiers street by street, village by village, city by city. It may take some time to get an armed resistance going but I have no doubt that the current generation of Ukrainians will take to partisan warfare as effectively as their grandparents/great grandparents before them.

the militia. Trying to take on a larger, better equipped, better trained force with air cover doesn't work face-to-face...
Those guys could dramatically improve any insurgency instead of being sacrificed for a lost cause valor...

I'd love to see the Russian civilian protests work.
However, if we think that Canada has gotten rough with the truckers, then hold onto your babushkas.
If (when) Putin gets really pizzed, then I'm fearful that we'll see Putin attempt a Stalin-esque response.
Maybe Putin will fail (praying that he will). Even if he fails, then there's going to be a BUNCH of 'missing' persons.
But let's hope for a sequel of the Boris Yeltsin rise to power and the end of dictatorship in Russia.
